With the advent of networking technologies and increasing network attacks, Intrusion Detection systems are apparently needed to stop attacks and malicious activities. Various frameworks and techniques have been developed to solve the problem of intrusion detection, still there is need for new frameworks as per the challenging scenario of enormous scale in data size and nature of attacks. Current IDS systems pose challenges on the throughput to work with high speed networks. In this paper we address the issue of high computational overhead of anomaly based IDS and propose the solution using discretization as a data preprocessing step which can drastically reduce the computation overhead. We propose method to provide near real time detection of attacks using only basic flow level features that can easily be extracted from network packets.

An adaptable agent-based IDS (AAIDS) inspired by the danger theory of artificial immune system is proposed. The learning mechanism of AAIDS is designed by emulating how dendritic cells (DC) in immune systems detect and classify danger signals. AG agent, DC agent and TC agent coordinate together and respond to system calls directly rather than analyze network packets. Simulations show AAIDS can determine several critical scenarios of the system behaviors where packet analysis is impractical.

Distributed denial of service attacks represent continuous threat to availability of information and communication resources. This research conducted the analysis of relevant scientific literature and synthesize parameters on packet and traffic flow level applicable for detection of infrastructure layer DDoS attacks. It is concluded that packet level detection uses two or more parameters while traffic flow level detection often used only one parameter which makes it more convenient and resource efficient approach in DDoS detection.
