In this paper, a sliding mode control (SMC) based on nonlinear disturbance observer and intermittent control is proposed to maximize the security of cyber-physical systems (CPSs), aiming at the cyber-attacks and physical uncertainties of cyber-physical systems. In the CPSs, the transmission of information data and control signals to the remote end through the network may lead to cyber attacks, and there will be uncertainties in the physical system. Therefore, this paper establishes a CPSs model that includes network attacks and physical uncertainties. Secondly, according to the analysis of the mathematical model, an adaptive SMC based on disturbance observer and intermittent control is designed to keep the CPSs stable in the presence of network attacks and physical uncertainties. In this strategy, the adaptive strategy suppresses the controller The chattering of the output. Intermittent control breaks the limitations of traditional continuous control to ensure efficient use of resources. Finally, to prove the control performance of the controller, numerical simulation results are given.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), a class of complex intelligent systems, are considered the backbone of Industry 4.0. They aim to achieve large-scale, networked control of dynamical systems and processes such as electricity and gas distribution networks and deliver pervasive information services by combining state-of-the-art computing, communication, and control technologies. However, CPSs are often highly nonlinear and uncertain, and their intrinsic reliance on open communication platforms increases their vulnerability to security threats, which entails additional challenges to conventional control design approaches. Indeed, sensor measurements and control command signals, whose integrity plays a critical role in correct controller design, may be interrupted or falsely modified when broadcasted on wireless communication channels due to cyber attacks. This can have a catastrophic impact on CPS performance. In this paper, we first conduct a thorough analysis of recently developed secure and resilient control approaches leveraging the solid foundations of adaptive control theory to achieve security and resilience in networked CPSs against sensor and actuator attacks. Then, we discuss the limitations of current adaptive control strategies and present several future research directions in this field.

We use discrete-time adaptive control theory to design a novel false data injection (FDI) attack against automatic generation control (AGC), a critical system that maintains a power grid at its requisite frequency. FDI attacks can cause equipment damage or blackouts by falsifying measurements in the streaming sensor data used to monitor the grid's operation. Compared to prior work, the proposed attack (i) requires less knowledge on the part of the attacker, such as correctly forecasting the future demand for power; (ii) is stealthier in its ability to bypass standard methods for detecting bad sensor data and to keep the false sensor readings near historical norms until the attack is well underway; and (iii) can sustain the frequency excursion as long as needed to cause real-world damage, in spite of AGC countermeasures. We validate the performance of the proposed attack on realistic 37-bus and 118-bus setups in PowerWorld, an industry-strength power system simulator trusted by real-world operators. The results demonstrate the attack's improved stealthiness and effectiveness compared to prior work.

In this paper we study the problem of regret minimization in reinforcement learning (RL) under differential privacy constraints. This work is motivated by the wide range of RL applications for providing personalized service, where privacy concerns are becoming paramount. In contrast to previous works, we take the first step towards non-tabular RL settings, while providing a rigorous privacy guarantee. In particular, we consider the adaptive control of differentially private linear quadratic (LQ) systems. We develop the first private RL algorithm, Private-OFU-RL which is able to attain a sub-linear regret while guaranteeing privacy protection. More importantly, the additional cost due to privacy is only on the order of \$\textbackslashtextbackslashfrac\textbackslashtextbackslashln(1/\textbackslashtextbackslashdelta)ˆ1/4\textbackslashtextbackslashvarepsilonˆ1/2\$ given privacy parameters \$\textbackslashtextbackslashvarepsilon, \textbackslashtextbackslashdelta \textbackslashtextgreater 0\$. Through this process, we also provide a general procedure for adaptive control of LQ systems under changing regularizers, which not only generalizes previous non-private controls, but also serves as the basis for general private controls.

Due to the insufficient awareness of decision makers on the security risks of industrial cyber-physical systems(ICPS) under cyber-attacks, it is difficult to take effective defensive measures according to the characteristics of different cyber-attacks in advance. To solve the above problem, this paper gives a qualitative analysis method of ICPS security risk from the perspective of defenders. The ICPS being attacked is modeled as a dynamic closed-loop fusion model where the mathematical models of the physical plant and the feedback controller are established. Based on the fusion model, the disruption resources generated by attacks are mathematically described. Based on the designed Kalman filter, the detection of attacks is judged according to the residual value of the system. According to the disruption resources and detectability, a general security risk level model is further established to evaluate the security risk level of the system under attacks. The simulation experiments are conducted by using Matlab to analyze the destructiveness and detectability of attacks, where the results show that the proposed qualitative analysis method can effectively describe the security risk under the cyber-attacks.

The limited output of various drives means a challenge in controller design whenever the acceleration need of the "nominal trajectory to be tracked" temporarily exceeds the abilities of the saturated control system. The prevailing control design methods can tackle this problem either in a single theoretical step or in two consecutive steps. In this latter case in the first step the design happens without taking into account the actuator constraints, then apply a saturation compensator if the phenomenon of windup is observed. In the Fixed Point Iteration- based Adaptive Control (FPIAC) that has been developed as an alternative of the Lyapunov function-based approach the actuator saturation causes problems in its both elementary levels: in the kinematic/kinetic level where the desired acceleration is calculated, and in the iterative process that compensates the effects of modeling errors of the dynamic system under control and that of the external disturbances. The here presented approach tackles this problem in both levels by relatively simple considerations. To illustrate the method's efficiency simulation investigations were done in the FPIAC control of a modification of the van der Pol oscillator to which an additional strongly nonlinear term was added.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are playing important roles in the critical infrastructure now. A prominent family of CPSs are networked control systems in which the control and feedback signals are carried over computer networks like the Internet. Communication over insecure networks make system vulnerable to cyber attacks. In this article, we design an intrusion detection and compensation framework based on system/plant identification to fight covert attacks. We collect error statistics of the output estimation during the learning phase of system operation and after that, monitor the system behavior to see if it significantly deviates from the expected outputs. A compensating controller is further designed to intervene and replace the classic controller once the attack is detected. The proposed model is tested on a DC motor as the plant and is put against a deception signal amplification attack over the forward link. Simulation results show that the detection algorithm well detects the intrusion and the compensator is also successful in alleviating the attack effects.

In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive control architecture for addressing security and safety in cyber-physical systems subject to exogenous disturbances. Specifically, we develop an adaptive controller for time-invariant, state-dependent adversarial sensor and actuator attacks in the face of stochastic exogenous disturbances. We show that the proposed controller guarantees uniform ultimate boundedness of the closed-loop dynamical system in a mean-square sense. We further discuss the practicality of the proposed approach and provide a numerical example involving the lateral directional dynamics of an aircraft to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed adaptive control architecture.

This paper presents a novel sensor parameter fault diagnosis method for generally multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) affine nonlinear systems based on adaptive observer. Firstly, the affine nonlinear systems are transformed into the particular systems via diffeomorphic transformation using Lie derivative. Then, based on the techniques of high-gain observer and adaptive estimation, an adaptive observer structure is designed with simple method for jointly estimating the states and the unknown parameters in the output equation of the nonlinear systems. And an algorithm of the fault estimation is derived. The global exponential convergence of the proposed observer is proved succinctly. Also the proposed method can be applied to the fault diagnosis of generally affine nonlinear systems directly by the reversibility of aforementioned coordinate transformation. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed fault diagnosis scheme.
