Optical CDMA (OCMDA) technology directly encrypts optical transmission links at the physical layer, which can improve the security of communication system against fibre-optic eavesdropping attacks. System parameters will affect the performances of OCDMA systems, based on the wiretap channel model of OCDMA systems, "secrecy capacity" is employed as an indicator to estimate the effects of system parameters (the type of code words, the length of code words) on the security of the systems. Simulation results demonstrate that system parameters play an important role and choosing the code words with better cross-correlation characteristics can improve the security of OCDMA systems.

Griffioen, Paul, Weerakkody, Sean, Sinopoli, Bruno.  2019.  An Optimal Design of a Moving Target Defense for Attack Detection in Control Systems. 2019 American Control Conference (ACC). :4527–4534.
In this paper, we consider the problem of designing system parameters to improve detection of attacks in control systems. Specifically, we study control systems which are vulnerable to integrity attacks on sensors and actuators. We aim to defend against strong model aware adversaries that can read and modify all sensors and actuators. Previous work has proposed a moving target defense for detecting integrity attacks on control systems. Here, an authenticating subsystem with time-varying dynamics coupled to the original plant is introduced. Due to this coupling, an attack on the original system will affect the authenticating subsystem and in turn be revealed by a set of sensors measuring the extended plant. Moreover, the time-varying dynamics of the extended plant act as a moving target, preventing an adversary from developing an effective adaptive attack strategy. Previous work has failed to consider the design of the time-varying system matrices and as such provides little in terms of guidelines for implementation in real systems. This paper proposes two optimization problems for designing these matrices. The first designs the auxiliary actuators to maximize detection performance while the second designs the coupling matrices to maximize system estimation performance. Numerical examples are presented that validate our approach.

Recently, the security of state estimation has been attracting significant research attention due to the need for trustworthy situation awareness in emerging (e.g., industrial) cyber-physical systems. In this paper, we investigate secure estimation based on Kalman filtering (SEKF) using partially homomorphically encrypted data. The encryption will enhance the confidentiality not only of data transmitted in the communication network, but also key system information required by the estimator. We use a multiplicative homomorphic encryption scheme, but with a modified decryption algorithm. SEKF is able to conceal comprehensive information (i.e., system parameters, measurements, and state estimates) aggregated at the sink node of the estimator, while retaining the effectiveness of normal Kalman filtering. Therefore, even if an attacker has gained unauthorized access to the estimator and associated communication channels, he will not be able to obtain sufficient knowledge of the system state to guide the attack, e.g., ensure its stealthiness. We present an implementation structure of the SEKF to reduce the communication overhead compared with traditional secure multiparty computation (SMC) methods. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the SEKF on an IEEE 9-bus power system.

Large-scale infrastructures are critical to economic and social development, and hence their continued performance and security are of high national importance. Such an infrastructure often is a system of systems, and its functionality critically depends on the inherent robustness of its constituent systems and its defense strategy for countering attacks. Additionally, interdependencies between the systems play another critical role in determining the infrastructure robustness specified by its survival probability. In this paper, we develop game-theoretic models between a defender and an attacker for a generic system of systems using inherent parameters and conditional survival probabilities that characterize the interdependencies. We derive Nash Equilibrium conditions for the cases of interdependent and independent systems of systems under sum-form utility functions. We derive expressions for the infrastructure survival probability that capture its dependence on cost and system parameters, and also on dependencies that are specified by conditional probabilities. We apply the results to cyber-physical systems which show the effects on system survival probability due to defense and attack intensities, inherent robustness, unit cost, target valuation, and interdependencies.
