As the IPv6 protocol has been rapidly developed and applied, the security of IPv6 networks has become the focus of academic and industrial attention. Despite the fact that the IPv6 protocol is designed with security in mind, due to insufficient defense measures of current firewalls and intrusion detection systems for IPv6 networks, the construction of covert channels using fields not defined or reserved in IPv6 protocols may compromise the information systems. By discussing the possibility of constructing storage covert channels within IPv6 protocol fields, 10 types of IPv6 covert channels are constructed with undefined and reserved fields, including the flow label field, the traffic class field of IPv6 header, the reserved fields of IPv6 extension headers and the code field of ICMPv6 header. An IPv6 covert channel detection method based on field matching (CC-Guard) is proposed, and a typical IPv6 network environment is built for testing. In comparison with existing detection tools, the experimental results show that the CC-Guard not only can detect more covert channels consisting of IPv6 extension headers and ICMPv6 headers, but also achieves real-time detection with a lower detection overhead.

Liang, Xiao, Chen, Heyao.  2019.  A SDN-Based Hierarchical Authentication Mechanism for IPv6 Address. 2019 IEEE International Conference on Intelligence and Security Informatics (ISI). :225–225.
The emergence of IPv6 protocol extends the address pool, but it also exposes all the Internet-connected devices to danger. Currently, there are some traditional schemes on security management of network addresses, such as prevention, traceability and encryption authentication, but few studies work on IPv6 protocol. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical authentication mechanism for the IPv6 source address with the technology of software defined network (SDN). This mechanism combines the authentication of three parts, namely the access network, the intra-domain and the inter-domain. And it can provide a fine-grained security protection for the devices using IPv6 addresses.

Mavani, M., Asawa, K..  2017.  Experimental Study of IP Spoofing Attack in 6LoWPAN Network. 2017 7th International Conference on Cloud Computing, Data Science Engineering - Confluence. :445–449.

6L0WPAN is a communication protocol for Internet of Things. 6LoWPAN is IPv6 protocol modified for low power and lossy personal area networks. 6LoWPAN inherits threats from its predecessors IPv4 and IPv6. IP spoofing is a known attack prevalent in IPv4 and IPv6 networks but there are new vulnerabilities which creates new paths, leading to the attack. This study performs the experimental study to check the feasibility of performing IP spoofing attack on 6LoWPAN Network. Intruder misuses 6LoWPAN control messages which results into wrong IPv6-MAC binding in router. Attack is also simulated in cooja simulator. Simulated results are analyzed for finding cost to the attacker in terms of energy and memory consumption.
