Making use of spectrally diverse communications links to re-route traffic in response to dynamic environments to manage network bottlenecks has become essential in order to guarantee message delivery across heterogeneous networks. We propose an innovative, proactive Congestion Aware Intent-Based Routing (CONAIR) architecture that can select among available communication link resources based on quality of service (QoS) metrics to support continuous information exchange between networked participants. The CONAIR architecture utilizes a Network Controller (NC) and artificial intelligence (AI) to re-route traffic based on traffic priority, fundamental to increasing end user quality of experience (QoE) and mission effectiveness. The CONAIR architecture provides network behavior prediction, and can mitigate congestion prior to its occurrence unlike traditional static routing techniques, e.g. Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), which are prone to congestion due to infrequent routing table updates. Modeling and simulation (M&S) was performed on a multi-hop network in order to characterize the resiliency and scalability benefits of CONAIR over OSPF routing-based frameworks. Results demonstrate that for varying traffic profiles, packet loss and end-to-end latency is minimized.

Ruiz-Martin, Cristina, Wainer, Gabriel, Lopez-Paredes, Adolfo.  2020.  Studying Communications Resiliency in Emergency Plans. 2020 Spring Simulation Conference (SpringSim). :1–12.
Recent disasters have shown that hazards can be unpredictable and can have catastrophic consequences. Emergency plans are key to dealing with these situations and communications play a key role in emergency management. In this paper, we provide a formalism to design resilient emergency plans in terms of communications. We exemplify how to use the formalism using a case study of a Nuclear Emergency Plan.

Communications play a fundamental role in the economic and social well-being of the citizens and on operations of most of the critical infrastructures (CIs). Extreme weather events, natural disasters and criminal attacks represent a challenge due to their increase in frequency and intensity requiring smarter resilience of the Communication CIs, which are extremely vulnerable due to the ever-increasing complexity of the architecture also in light of the evolution towards 5G, the extensive use of programmable platforms and exponential growth of connected devices. In this paper, we present the aim of RESISTO H2020 EU-funded project, which constitutes an innovative solution for Communication CIs holistic situation awareness and enhanced resilience.

The virtual world does not observe national borders, has no uniform legal system, and does not have a common perception of security and privacy issues. It is however, relatively homogenous in terms of technology.A cyberattack on an energy delivery system can have significant impacts on the availability of a system to perform critical functions as well as the integrity of the system and the confidentiality of sensitive information.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that allows the networking of various objects of everyday life and communications on the Internet without human interaction. The IoT consists of Low-Power and Lossy Networks (LLN) which for routing use a special protocol called Routing over Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL). Due to the resource-constrained nature of RPL networks, they may be exposed to a variety of internal attacks. Neighbor attack and DIS attack are the specific internal attacks at this protocol. This paper presents an anomaly-based lightweight Intrusion Detection System (IDS) based on threshold values for detecting attacks on the RPL protocol. The results of the simulation using Cooja show that the proposed model has a very high True Positive Rate (TPR) and in some cases, it can be 100%, while the False Positive Rate (FPR) is very low. The results show that the proposed model is fully effective in detecting attacks and applicable to large-scale networks.
