Attribution Modeling for Deep Morphological Neural Networks using Saliency Maps. 2021 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN). :1–8.
Mathematical morphology has been explored in deep learning architectures, as a substitute to convolution, for problems like pattern recognition and object detection. One major advantage of using morphology in deep learning is the utility of morphological erosion and dilation. Specifically, these operations naturally embody interpretability due to their underlying connections to the analysis of geometric structures. While the use of these operations results in explainable learned filters, morphological deep learning lacks attribution modeling, i.e., a paradigm to specify what areas of the original observed image are important. Furthermore, convolution-based deep learning has achieved attribution modeling through a variety of neural eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) paradigms (e.g., saliency maps, integrated gradients, guided backpropagation, and gradient class activation mapping). Thus, a problem for morphology-based deep learning is that these XAI methods do not have a morphological interpretation due to the differences in the underlying mathematics. Herein, we extend the neural XAI paradigm of saliency maps to morphological deep learning, and by doing, so provide an example of morphological attribution modeling. Furthermore, our qualitative results highlight some advantages of using morphological attribution modeling.

A Novel Approach for Vehicle-logo Location Based on Edge Detection and Morphological Filter. 2009 Second International Symposium on Electronic Commerce and Security. 1:343—345.
Vehicle-logo location is a crucial step in vehicle-logo recognition system. In this paper, a novel approach of the vehicle-logo location based on edge detection and morphological filter is proposed. Firstly, the approximate location of the vehicle-logo region is determined by the prior knowledge about the position of the vehicle-logo; Secondly, the texture measure is defined to recognize the texture of the vehicle-logo background; Then, vertical edge detection is executed for the vehicle-logo background with the horizontal texture and horizontal edge detection is implemented for the vehicle-logo background with the vertical texture; Finally, position of the vehicle-logo is located accurately by mathematical morphology filter. Experimental results show the proposed method is effective.

Overview of edge detection algorithms based on mathematical morphology. 2022 IEEE 6th Advanced Information Technology, Electronic and Automation Control Conference (IAEAC ). :1321—1326.
Edge detection is the key and difficult point of machine vision and image processing technology. The traditional edge detection algorithm is sensitive to noise and it is difficult to accurately extract the edge of the image, so the effect of image processing is not ideal. To solve this problem, people in the industry use the structural element features of morphological edge detection operator to extract the edge features of the image by carefully designing and combining the structural elements of different sizes and directions, so as to effectively ensure the integrity of edge information in all directions and eliminate large noise at the same time. This paper first introduces the traditional edge detection algorithms, then summarizes the edge detection algorithms based on mathematical morphology in recent years, finds that the selection of multi-scale and multi-directional structural elements is an important research direction, and finally discusses the development trend of mathematical morphology edge detection technology.
