Two systems pursuing their own goals in a shared world can interact in ways that are not so explicit - such that the presence of another system alone can interfere with how one is able to achieve its own goals. Drawing inspiration from human psychology and the theory of social action, we propose the notion of employing social action in socially situated agents as a means of alleviating interference in interacting systems. Here we demonstrate that these specific issues of behavioural and evolutionary instability caused by the unintended consequences of interactions can be addressed with agents capable of a fusion of goal-rationality and traditional action, resulting in a stable society capable of achieving goals during the course of evolution.

Today, computing on various Android devices is pervasive. However, growing security vulnerabilities and attacks in the Android ecosystem constitute various threats through user apps. Taint analysis is a common technique for defending against these threats, yet it suffers from challenges in attaining practical simultaneous scalability and effectiveness. This paper presents a novel approach to fast and precise taint checking, called incremental taint analysis, by exploiting the evolving nature of Android apps. The analysis narrows down the search space of taint checking from an entire app, as conventionally addressed, to the parts of the program that are different from its previous versions. This technique improves the overall efficiency of checking multiple versions of the app as it evolves. We have implemented the techniques as a tool prototype, EVOTAINT, and evaluated our analysis by applying it to real-world evolving Android apps. Our preliminary results show that the incremental approach largely reduced the cost of taint analysis, by 78.6% on average, yet without sacrificing the analysis effectiveness, relative to a representative precise taint analysis as the baseline.

Evolution in software systems is a necessary activity that occurs due to fixing bugs, adding functionality or improving system quality. Systems often need to be shown to comply with regulatory standards. Along with demonstrating compliance, an artifact, called an assurance case, is often produced to show that the system indeed satisfies the property imposed by the standard (e.g., safety, privacy, security, etc.). Since each of the system, the standard, and the assurance case can be presented as a model, we propose the extension and use of traditional model management operators to aid in the reuse of parts of the assurance case when the system undergoes an evolution. Specifically, we present a model management approach that eventually produces a partial evolved assurance case and guidelines to help the assurance engineer in completing it. We demonstrate how our approach works on an automotive subsystem regulated by the ISO 26262 standard.

Access Control Policies (ACPs) evolve. Understanding the trends and evolution patterns of ACPs could provide guidance about the reliability and maintenance of ACPs. Our research goal is to help policy authors improve the quality of ACP evolution based on the understanding of trends and evolution patterns in ACPs We performed an empirical study by analyzing the ACP changes over time for two systems: Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux), and an open-source virtual computing platform (VCL). We measured trends in terms of the number of policy lines and lines of code (LOC), respectively. We observed evolution patterns. For example, an evolution pattern st1 → st2 says that st1 (e.g., "read") evolves into st2 (e.g., "read" and "write"). This pattern indicates that policy authors add "write" permission in addition to existing "read" permission. We found that some of evolution patterns appear to occur more frequently.
