Visible to the public Self Sustaining CPS for Structural Monitoring

Abstract:

The American Society of Civil Engineers' recent report on US infrastructure estimates that a $2.2 trillion investment would be needed to bring them up to par. An estimated 30% of the nation's 10,000 steel railroad bridges and 600,000 highway bridges are either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete or both. Currently, most bridge inspections are visual only, which has been shown to be ineffective in identifying problems. Acoustic Emission (AE) testing is a comprehensive and effective way of detecting structural damage.

Visible to the public CPS Foundations in Computation and Communication

Abstract:

Modern processor architectures sacrifice timing predictability for increased average computational throughput. Branch prediction, multi-level memory hierarchies, out-of-order execution, and data forwarding all make accurate execution time predictions impossible. As accurate timing predictions are required for task scheduling, our goal is the development of a Precision Timed (PRET) processor, along with the inter-process communication methods and operating system services, which remove many of the sources of timing indeterminacy.

Visible to the public A Framework for Enabling Energy-Aware Smart Facilities

Abstract:

The goal of the proposed research is to identify ways to inexpensively provide specific information about energy consumption in buildings and facilitate conservation. Signal processing, machine learning, and data fusion techniques will be developed to extract actionable information from whole-building power meters and other available sensors.

Visible to the public A Unified System Theoretic Framework for Cyber Attack-Resilient Power Grid

Abstract:

The electric power grid is a complex cyber-physical system (CPS), whose reliable and secure operation is of paramount importance to national security and economic vitality. There is a growing and evolving threat of cyber-based attacks, both in numbers and sophistication, on the nation's critical infrastructures. Therefore, cyber security - encompassing attack prevention, detection, mitigation, and resilience - is critical in today's power grid and the emerging smart grid.

Visible to the public Real-Time, Simulation-based Planning and Asynchronous Coordination for Cyber-Physical Systems

Abstract:

Towards the development of robust cyber-physical systems, this project has developed solutions for planning and coordinating the motions of individual and networks of autonomous systems. This work is inspired by related challenges and techniques in algorithmic motion planning, multi-agent systems, sensor networks, learning and control. The focus of the project has been on the following tasks during the period 2012-2013:

Visible to the public Formal Models of Human Control and Interaction with CPS

Abstract:

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) encompass a large variety of systems including example future energy systems (e.g. smart grid), homeland security and emergency response, smart medical technologies, smart cars and air transportation. One of the most important challenges in the design and deployment of Cyber-Physical Systems is how to formally guarantee that they are amenable to effective human control.
