Azfar, A., Choo, K.-K.R., Lin Liu.  2014.  A Study of Ten Popular Android Mobile VoIP Applications: Are the Communications Encrypted? System Sciences (HICSS), 2014 47th Hawaii International Conference on. :4858-4867.

Mobile Voice over Internet Protocol (mVoIP) applications have gained increasing popularity in the last few years, with millions of users communicating using such applications (e.g. Skype). Similar to other forms of Internet and telecommunications, mVoIP communications are vulnerable to both lawful and unauthorized interceptions. Encryption is a common way of ensuring the privacy of mVoIP users. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no academic study to determine whether mVoIP applications provide encrypted communications. In this paper, we examine Skype and nine other popular mVoIP applications for Android mobile devices, and analyze the intercepted communications to determine whether the captured voice and text communications are encrypted (or not). The results indicate that most of the applications encrypt text communications. However, voice communications may not be encrypted in six of the ten applications examined.

Kirsch, J., Goose, S., Amir, Y., Dong Wei, Skare, P..  2014.  Survivable SCADA Via Intrusion-Tolerant Replication. Smart Grid, IEEE Transactions on. 5:60-70.

Providers of critical infrastructure services strive to maintain the high availability of their SCADA systems. This paper reports on our experience designing, architecting, and evaluating the first survivable SCADA system-one that is able to ensure correct behavior with minimal performance degradation even during cyber attacks that compromise part of the system. We describe the challenges we faced when integrating modern intrusion-tolerant protocols with a conventional SCADA architecture and present the techniques we developed to overcome these challenges. The results illustrate that our survivable SCADA system not only functions correctly in the face of a cyber attack, but that it also processes in excess of 20 000 messages per second with a latency of less than 30 ms, making it suitable for even large-scale deployments managing thousands of remote terminal units.

Schneider, S., Lansing, J., Fangjian Gao, Sunyaev, A..  2014.  A Taxonomic Perspective on Certification Schemes: Development of a Taxonomy for Cloud Service Certification Criteria. System Sciences (HICSS), 2014 47th Hawaii International Conference on. :4998-5007.

Numerous cloud service certifications (CSCs) are emerging in practice. However, in their striving to establish the market standard, CSC initiatives proceed independently, resulting in a disparate collection of CSCs that are predominantly proprietary, based on various standards, and differ in terms of scope, audit process, and underlying certification schemes. Although literature suggests that a certification's design influences its effectiveness, research on CSC design is lacking and there are no commonly agreed structural characteristics of CSCs. Informed by data from 13 expert interviews and 7 cloud computing standards, this paper delineates and structures CSC knowledge by developing a taxonomy for criteria to be assessed in a CSC. The taxonomy consists of 6 dimensions with 28 subordinate characteristics and classifies 328 criteria, thereby building foundations for future research to systematically develop and investigate the efficacy of CSC designs as well as providing a knowledge base for certifiers, cloud providers, and users.

Marashi, K., Sarvestani, S.S..  2014.  Towards Comprehensive Modeling of Reliability for Smart Grids: Requirements and Challenges. High-Assurance Systems Engineering (HASE), 2014 IEEE 15th International Symposium on. :105-112.

Smart grids utilize computation and communication to improve the efficacy and dependability of power generation, transmission, and distribution. As such, they are among the most critical and complex cyber-physical systems. The success of smart grids in achieving their stated goals is yet to be rigorously proven. In this paper, our focus is on improvements (or lack thereof) in reliability. We discuss vulnerabilities in the smart grid and their potential impact on its reliability, both generally and for the specific example of the IEEE-14 bus system. We conclude the paper by presenting a preliminary Markov imbedded systems model for reliability of smart grids and describe how it can be evolved to capture the vulnerabilities discussed.

Tehranipoor, M., Forte, D..  2014.  Tutorial T4: All You Need to Know about Hardware Trojans and Counterfeit ICs. VLSI Design and 2014 13th International Conference on Embedded Systems, 2014 27th International Conference on. :9-10.

The migration from a vertical to horizontal business model has made it easier to introduce hardware Trojans and counterfeit electronic parts into the electronic component supply chain. Hardware Trojans are malicious modifications made to original IC designs that reduce system integrity (change functionality, leak private data, etc.). Counterfeit parts are often below specification and/or of substandard quality. The existence of Trojans and counterfeit parts creates risks for the life-critical systems and infrastructures that incorporate them including automotive, aerospace, military, and medical systems. In this tutorial, we will cover: (i) Background and motivation for hardware Trojan and counterfeit prevention/detection; (ii) Taxonomies related to both topics; (iii) Existing solutions; (iv) Open challenges; (v) New and unified solutions to address these challenges.

Biagioni, E..  2014.  Ubiquitous Interpersonal Communication over Ad-hoc Networks and the Internet. System Sciences (HICSS), 2014 47th Hawaii International Conference on. :5144-5153.

The hardware and low-level software in many mobile devices are capable of mobile-to-mobile communication, including ad-hoc 802.11, Bluetooth, and cognitive radios. We have started to leverage this capability to provide interpersonal communication both over infrastructure networks (the Internet), and over ad-hoc and delay-tolerant networks composed of the mobile devices themselves. This network is decentralized in the sense that it can function without any infrastructure, but does take advantage of infrastructure connections when available. All interpersonal communication is encrypted and authenticated so packets may be carried by devices belonging to untrusted others. The decentralized model of security builds a flexible trust network on top of the social network of communicating individuals. This social network can be used to prioritize packets to or from individuals closely related by the social network. Other packets are prioritized to favor packets likely to consume fewer network resources. Each device also has a policy that determines how many packets may be forwarded, with the goal of providing useful interpersonal communications using at most 1% of any given resource on mobile devices. One challenge in a fully decentralized network is routing. Our design uses Rendezvous Points (RPs) and Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs) for delivery over infrastructure networks, and hop-limited broadcast and Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) within the wireless ad-hoc network.

Manning, F.J., Mitropoulos, F.J..  2014.  Utilizing Attack Graphs to Measure the Efficacy of Security Frameworks across Multiple Applications. System Sciences (HICSS), 2014 47th Hawaii International Conference on. :4915-4920.

One of the primary challenges when developing or implementing a security framework for any particular environment is determining the efficacy of the implementation. Does the implementation address all of the potential vulnerabilities in the environment, or are there still unaddressed issues? Further, if there is a choice between two frameworks, what objective measure can be used to compare the frameworks? To address these questions, we propose utilizing a technique of attack graph analysis to map the attack surface of the environment and identify the most likely avenues of attack. We show that with this technique we can quantify the baseline state of an application and compare that to the attack surface after implementation of a security framework, while simultaneously allowing for comparison between frameworks in the same environment or a single framework across multiple applications.

Heimerl, F., Lohmann, S., Lange, S., Ertl, T..  2014.  Word Cloud Explorer: Text Analytics Based on Word Clouds. System Sciences (HICSS), 2014 47th Hawaii International Conference on. :1833-1842.

Word clouds have emerged as a straightforward and visually appealing visualization method for text. They are used in various contexts as a means to provide an overview by distilling text down to those words that appear with highest frequency. Typically, this is done in a static way as pure text summarization. We think, however, that there is a larger potential to this simple yet powerful visualization paradigm in text analytics. In this work, we explore the usefulness of word clouds for general text analysis tasks. We developed a prototypical system called the Word Cloud Explorer that relies entirely on word clouds as a visualization method. It equips them with advanced natural language processing, sophisticated interaction techniques, and context information. We show how this approach can be effectively used to solve text analysis tasks and evaluate it in a qualitative user study.

Crisan, D., Birke, R., Barabash, K., Cohen, R., Gusat, M..  2014.  Datacenter Applications in Virtualized Networks: A Cross-Layer Performance Study. Selected Areas in Communications, IEEE Journal on. 32:77-87.

Datacenter-based Cloud computing has induced new disruptive trends in networking, key among which is network virtualization. Software-Defined Networking overlays aim to improve the efficiency of the next generation multitenant datacenters. While early overlay prototypes are already available, they focus mainly on core functionality, with little being known yet about their impact on the system level performance. Using query completion time as our primary performance metric, we evaluate the overlay network impact on two representative datacenter workloads, Partition/Aggregate and 3-Tier. We measure how much performance is traded for overlay's benefits in manageability, security and policing. Finally, we aim to assist the datacenter architects by providing a detailed evaluation of the key overlay choices, all made possible by our accurate cross-layer hybrid/mesoscale simulation platform.

Pi-Chung Wang.  2014.  Scalable Packet Classification for Datacenter Networks. Selected Areas in Communications, IEEE Journal on. 32:124-137.

The key challenge to a datacenter network is its scalability to handle many customers and their applications. In a datacenter network, packet classification plays an important role in supporting various network services. Previous algorithms store classification rules with the same length combinations in a hash table to simplify the search procedure. The search performance of hash-based algorithms is tied to the number of hash tables. To achieve fast and scalable packet classification, we propose an algorithm, encoded rule expansion, to transform rules into an equivalent set of rules with fewer distinct length combinations, without affecting the classification results. The new algorithm can minimize the storage penalty of transformation and achieve a short search time. In addition, the scheme supports fast incremental updates. Our simulation results show that more than 90% hash tables can be eliminated. The reduction of length combinations leads to an improvement on speed performance of packet classification by an order of magnitude. The results also show that the software implementation of our scheme without using any hardware parallelism can support up to one thousand customer VLANs and one million rules, where each rule consumes less than 60 bytes and each packet classification can be accomplished under 50 memory accesses.

Sun, H., Liu, L., Feng, L., Gu, Y. X..  2014.  Introducing Code Assets of a New White-Box Security Modeling Language. 2014 IEEE 38th International Computer Software and Applications Conference Workshops. :116—121.

This paper argues about a new conceptual modeling language for the White-Box (WB) security analysis. In the WB security domain, an attacker may have access to the inner structure of an application or even the entire binary code. It becomes pretty easy for attackers to inspect, reverse engineer, and tamper the application with the information they steal. The basis of this paper is the 14 patterns developed by a leading provider of software protection technologies and solutions. We provide a part of a new modeling language named i-WBS (White-Box Security) to describe problems of WB security better. The essence of White-Box security problem is code security. We made the new modeling language focus on code more than ever before. In this way, developers who are not security experts can easily understand what they need to really protect.

Liu, J.N.K., Yanxing Hu, You, J.J., Yulin He.  2014.  An advancing investigation on reduct and consistency for decision tables in Variable Precision Rough Set models. Fuzzy Systems (FUZZ-IEEE), 2014 IEEE International Conference on. :1496-1503.

Variable Precision Rough Set (VPRS) model is one of the most important extensions of the Classical Rough Set (RS) theory. It employs a majority inclusion relation mechanism in order to make the Classical RS model become more fault tolerant, and therefore the generalization of the model is improved. This paper can be viewed as an extension of previous investigations on attribution reduction problem in VPRS model. In our investigation, we illustrated with examples that the previously proposed reduct definitions may spoil the hidden classification ability of a knowledge system by ignoring certian essential attributes in some circumstances. Consequently, by proposing a new β-consistent notion, we analyze the relationship between the structures of Decision Table (DT) and different definitions of reduct in VPRS model. Then we give a new notion of β-complement reduct that can avoid the defects of reduct notions defined in previous literatures. We also supply the method to obtain the β- complement reduct using a decision table splitting algorithm, and finally demonstrate the feasibility of our approach with sample instances.

Bhotto, M.Z.A., Antoniou, A..  2014.  Affine-Projection-Like Adaptive-Filtering Algorithms Using Gradient-Based Step Size. Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers, IEEE Transactions on. 61:2048-2056.

A new class of affine-projection-like (APL) adaptive-filtering algorithms is proposed. The new algorithms are obtained by eliminating the constraint of forcing the a posteriori error vector to zero in the affine-projection algorithm proposed by Ozeki and Umeda. In this way, direct or indirect inversion of the input signal matrix is not required and, consequently, the amount of computation required per iteration can be reduced. In addition, as demonstrated by extensive simulation results, the proposed algorithms offer reduced steady-state misalignment in system-identification, channel-equalization, and acoustic-echo-cancelation applications. A mean-square-error analysis of the proposed APL algorithms is also carried out and its accuracy is verified by using simulation results in a system-identification application.

Albasrawi, M.N., Jarus, N., Joshi, K.A., Sarvestani, S.S..  2014.  Analysis of Reliability and Resilience for Smart Grids. Computer Software and Applications Conference (COMPSAC), 2014 IEEE 38th Annual. :529-534.

Smart grids, where cyber infrastructure is used to make power distribution more dependable and efficient, are prime examples of modern infrastructure systems. The cyber infrastructure provides monitoring and decision support intended to increase the dependability and efficiency of the system. This comes at the cost of vulnerability to accidental failures and malicious attacks, due to the greater extent of virtual and physical interconnection. Any failure can propagate more quickly and extensively, and as such, the net result could be lowered reliability. In this paper, we describe metrics for assessment of two phases of smart grid operation: the duration before a failure occurs, and the recovery phase after an inevitable failure. The former is characterized by reliability, which we determine based on information about cascading failures. The latter is quantified using resilience, which can in turn facilitate comparison of recovery strategies. We illustrate the application of these metrics to a smart grid based on the IEEE 9-bus test system.

Zhe Gao, Xiaowu Cai, Chuan Lv, Chao Liang.  2014.  Analysis on vulnerability of power grid based on electrical betweenness with information entropy. Control Conference (CCC), 2014 33rd Chinese. :2727-2731.

This paper investigates the vulnerability of power grids based on the complex networks combining the information entropy. The difference of current directions for a link is considered, and it is characterized by the information entropy. By combining the information entropy, the electrical betweenness is improved to evaluate the vulnerability of power grids. Attacking the link based on the largest electrical betweenness with the information can get the larger size of the largest cluster and the lower lost of loads, compared with the electrical betweenness without the information entropy. Finally, IEEE 118 bus system is tested to validate the effectiveness of the novel index to characterize the the vulnerability of power grids.

Craig, P., Roa Seiler, N., Olvera Cervantes, A.D..  2014.  Animated Geo-temporal Clusters for Exploratory Search in Event Data Document Collections. Information Visualisation (IV), 2014 18th International Conference on. :157-163.

This paper presents a novel visual analytics technique developed to support exploratory search tasks for event data document collections. The technique supports discovery and exploration by clustering results and overlaying cluster summaries onto coordinated timeline and map views. Users can also explore and interact with search results by selecting clusters to filter and re-cluster the data with animation used to smooth the transition between views. The technique demonstrates a number of advantages over alternative methods for displaying and exploring geo-referenced search results and spatio-temporal data. Firstly, cluster summaries can be presented in a manner that makes them easy to read and scan. Listing representative events from each cluster also helps the process of discovery by preserving the diversity of results. Also, clicking on visual representations of geo-temporal clusters provides a quick and intuitive way to navigate across space and time simultaneously. This removes the need to overload users with the display of too many event labels at any one time. The technique was evaluated with a group of nineteen users and compared with an equivalent text based exploratory search engine.

Fernandez Arguedas, V., Pallotta, G., Vespe, M..  2014.  Automatic generation of geographical networks for maritime traffic surveillance. Information Fusion (FUSION), 2014 17th International Conference on. :1-8.

In this paper, an algorithm is proposed to automatically produce hierarchical graph-based representations of maritime shipping lanes extrapolated from historical vessel positioning data. Each shipping lane is generated based on the detection of the vessel behavioural changes and represented in a compact synthetic route composed of the network nodes and route segments. The outcome of the knowledge discovery process is a geographical maritime network that can be used in Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA) applications such as track reconstruction from missing information, situation/destination prediction, and detection of anomalous behaviour. Experimental results are presented, testing the algorithm in a specific scenario of interest, the Dover Strait.

Mewara, B., Bairwa, S., Gajrani, J..  2014.  Browser's defenses against reflected cross-site scripting attacks. Signal Propagation and Computer Technology (ICSPCT), 2014 International Conference on. :662-667.

Due to the frequent usage of online web applications for various day-to-day activities, web applications are becoming most suitable target for attackers. Cross-Site Scripting also known as XSS attack, one of the most prominent defacing web based attack which can lead to compromise of whole browser rather than just the actual web application, from which attack has originated. Securing web applications using server side solutions is not profitable as developers are not necessarily security aware. Therefore, browser vendors have tried to evolve client side filters to defend against these attacks. This paper shows that even the foremost prevailing XSS filters deployed by latest versions of most widely used web browsers do not provide appropriate defense. We evaluate three browsers - Internet Explorer 11, Google Chrome 32, and Mozilla Firefox 27 for reflected XSS attack against different type of vulnerabilities. We find that none of above is completely able to defend against all possible type of reflected XSS vulnerabilities. Further, we evaluate Firefox after installing an add-on named XSS-Me, which is widely used for testing the reflected XSS vulnerabilities. Experimental results show that this client side solution can shield against greater percentage of vulnerabilities than other browsers. It is witnessed to be more propitious if this add-on is integrated inside the browser instead being enforced as an extension.

Xiao-Bing Hu, Ming Wang, Leeson, M.S..  2014.  Calculating the complete pareto front for a special class of continuous multi-objective optimization problems. Evolutionary Computation (CEC), 2014 IEEE Congress on. :290-297.

Existing methods for multi-objective optimization usually provide only an approximation of a Pareto front, and there is little theoretical guarantee of finding the real Pareto front. This paper is concerned with the possibility of fully determining the true Pareto front for those continuous multi-objective optimization problems for which there are a finite number of local optima in terms of each single objective function and there is an effective method to find all such local optima. To this end, some generalized theoretical conditions are firstly given to guarantee a complete cover of the actual Pareto front for both discrete and continuous problems. Then based on such conditions, an effective search procedure inspired by the rising sea level phenomenon is proposed particularly for continuous problems of the concerned class. Even for general continuous problems to which not all local optima are available, the new method may still work well to approximate the true Pareto front. The good practicability of the proposed method is especially underpinned by multi-optima evolutionary algorithms. The advantages of the proposed method in terms of both solution quality and computational efficiency are illustrated by the simulation results.

Anwar, Z., Malik, A.W..  2014.  Can a DDoS Attack Meltdown My Data Center? A Simulation Study and Defense Strategies Communications Letters, IEEE. 18:1175-1178.

The goal of this letter is to explore the extent to which the vulnerabilities plaguing the Internet, particularly susceptibility to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, impact the Cloud. DDoS has been known to disrupt Cloud services, but could it do worse by permanently damaging server and switch hardware? Services are hosted in data centers with thousands of servers generating large amounts of heat. Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems prevent server downtime due to overheating. These are remotely managed using network management protocols that are susceptible to network attacks. Recently, Cloud providers have experienced outages due to HVAC malfunctions. Our contributions include a network simulation to study the feasibility of such an attack motivated by our experiences of such a security incident in a real data center. It demonstrates how a network simulator can study the interplay of the communication and thermal properties of a network and help prevent the Cloud provider's worst nightmare: meltdown of the data center as a result of a DDoS attack.

Lichen Zhang.  2014.  Convergence of physical system and cyber system modeling methods for aviation cyber physical control system. Information and Automation (ICIA), 2014 IEEE International Conference on. :542-547.

Recent attention to aviation cyber physical systems (ACPS) is driven by the need for seamless integration of design disciplines that dominate physical world and cyber world convergence. System convergence is a big obstacle to good aviation cyber-physical system (ACPS) design, which is due to a lack of an adequate scientific theoretical foundation for the subject. The absence of a good understanding of the science of aviation system convergence is not due to neglect, but rather due to its difficulty. Most complex aviation system builders have abandoned any science or engineering discipline for system convergence they simply treat it as a management problem. Aviation System convergence is almost totally absent from software engineering and engineering curricula. Hence, system convergence is particularly challenging in ACPS where fundamentally different physical and computational design concerns intersect. In this paper, we propose an integrated approach to handle System convergence of aviation cyber physical systems based on multi-dimensions, multi-views, multi-paradigm and multiple tools. This model-integrated development approach addresses the development needs of cyber physical systems through the pervasive use of models, and physical world, cyber world can be specified and modeled together, cyber world and physical world can be converged entirely, and cyber world models and physical world model can be integrated seamlessly. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by means of one practical case study: specifying and modeling Aircraft Systems. In this paper, We specify and model Aviation Cyber-Physical Systems with integrating Modelica, Modelicaml and Architecture Analysis & Design Language (AADL), the physical world is modeled by Modelica and Modelicaml, the cyber part is modeled by AADL and Modelicaml.

An application of two Cyber-Physical System (CPS) security countermeasures - Intelligent Checker (IC) and Cross-correlator - for enhancing CPS safety and achieving required CPS safety integrity level is presented. ICs are smart sensors aimed at detecting attacks in CPS and alerting the human operators. Cross-correlator is an anomaly detection technique for detecting deception attacks. We show how ICs could be implemented at three different CPS safety protection layers to maintain CPS in a safe state. In addition, we combine ICs with the cross-correlator technique to assure high probability of failure detection. Performance simulations show that a combination of these two security countermeasures is effective in detecting and mitigating CPS failures, including catastrophic failures.

We propose a novel phishing detection architecture based on transparent virtualization technologies and isolation of the own components. The architecture can be deployed as a security extension for virtual machines (VMs) running in the cloud. It uses fine-grained VM introspection (VMI) to extract, filter and scale a color-based fingerprint of web pages which are processed by a browser from the VM's memory. By analyzing the human perceptual similarity between the fingerprints, the architecture can reveal and mitigate phishing attacks which are based on redirection to spoofed web pages and it can also detect “Man-in-the-Browser” (MitB) attacks. To the best of our knowledge, the architecture is the first anti-phishing solution leveraging virtualization technologies. We explain details about the design and the implementation and we show results of an evaluation with real-world data.

This paper designs a secure transmission and authorization management system which based on the principles of Public Key Infrastructure and Rose-Based Access Control. It can solve the problems of identity authentication, secure transmission and access control on internet. In the first place, according to PKI principles, certificate authority system is implemented. It can issue and revoke the server-side and client-side digital certificate. Data secure transmission is achieved through the combination of digital certificate and SSL protocol. In addition, this paper analyses access control mechanism and RBAC model. The structure of RBAC model has been improved. The principle of group authority is added into the model and the combination of centralized authority and distributed authority management is adopted, so the model becomes more flexible.

Peng Yi, Yiguang Hong.  2014.  Distributed continuous-time gradient-based algorithm for constrained optimization. Control Conference (CCC), 2014 33rd Chinese. :1563-1567.

In this paper, we consider distributed algorithm based on a continuous-time multi-agent system to solve constrained optimization problem. The global optimization objective function is taken as the sum of agents' individual objective functions under a group of convex inequality function constraints. Because the local objective functions cannot be explicitly known by all the agents, the problem has to be solved in a distributed manner with the cooperation between agents. Here we propose a continuous-time distributed gradient dynamics based on the KKT condition and Lagrangian multiplier methods to solve the optimization problem. We show that all the agents asymptotically converge to the same optimal solution with the help of a constructed Lyapunov function and a LaSalle invariance principle of hybrid systems.
