Embedded and ubiquitous computing is an exciting paradigm that promises
to provide universal and continuous computing and communication services.
These systems affect all aspects of daily life and promise to revolutionize society
even more profoundly than elevators, electric motors, or even the personal
computer evolution ever did. The emergence of this technology is a natural
outcome of research and technological advances in a variety of areas including
embedded systems, pervasive computing and communications, wireless
networks, mobile computing, distributed computing and agent technologies.

The software layers and software support are fundamental throughout the
design of these systems, which offer a tremendous amount of computational
power that can be virtually and/or physically distributed. However, as software
application functionality continually increases and becomes more dynamic in
nature, the system's requirements in terms of parallelism, dynamism, timing,
power consumption, reliability, and quality of service are significantly increasing.
Key challenges to achieve these goals include mastering the system design
complexity while delivering the expected functionality in the most efficient
manner and considering multiple, often competing, requirements.
