Special Issue on System and Network Security: Anomaly Detection and Monitoring

Complex systems and networks often operate under variable and nonstationary conditions, thus requiring efficient and extensive monitoring and error detection solutions. The increasing complexity and dynamicity promote solutions that infer the status of the system observing anomalies rather than directly detecting errors. The timely identification of anomalies in dependable systems allows timely detecting errors in the services and reacting appropriately. Similarly, effective monitoring is required to quickly detect anomalies in system behavior due to security-related issues such as intrusion attempts and frauds, among other threats, which represent an increasingly relevant challenge form both a scientific and socioeconomic point of view.

The scope of the special issue is to present high quality, original research articles as well as position papers on measurement, monitoring, and anomaly detection techniques of systems.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Mathematical and empirical models for anomaly detection
  • Anomaly detection techniques
  • Anomaly detection for fault tolerant systems
  • Anomaly-based intrusion detection system
  • Host intrusion detection systems
  • Network intrusion detection systems
  • Statistical analysis of data for anomaly detection
  • Big data analysis for anomaly detection
  • Security management
  • Real-time network monitoring across the network stack
  • Traffic anomaly detection
  • Monitoring and analysis of data centres, cloud services, and CDNs
  • Performance evaluation of networked systems
  • Wearables, sensors, and IoT traffic monitoring and analysis
  • Assessment of previous measurement, monitoring, and anomaly detection research
