NIST Special Publication 1900-202 on CPS and IoT
There has historically been uncertainty about the relationship between CPS and IoT, which has hindered close interaction and communication across the respective communities. This document describes the origins of these terms, analyzes the range of definitions over time, and describes a unified perspective that clarifies that relationship and reduces uncertainty to promote a common basis for working together -- exchanging best practices and ideas, pursuing shared goals, avoiding duplication of effort, reducing the proliferation of conflicting standards, and catalyzing discovery and innovation.
Social Justice and Equity in the Engineering of Smart and Connected Communities Workshop Report
The workshop was organized around the themes of (i) Environment, Climate, and Equity, (ii) Mobility, Equity, Poverty, and Health, and (iii) Disaster Preparedness, Resilience, and Equity. Organizers and participants broadly considered how technology and engineering practices associated with the rise of smart cities might be adapted to address the needs of the most vulnerable.
NSF Visioning Workshop on Smart and Connected Communities Research and Education: Report
The workshop served as a forum to engage academic researchers, industry partners, and municipal leaders in indepth discussions on research gaps, practical needs, and priorities for enabling the S&CC of the future. The outcomes of the workshop include a vision for S&CC as well as a research and education agenda to achieve this S&CC vision. This report summarizes these outcomes and captures major research and implementation challenges, promising approaches, and potential pilot solutions.
2014 NSF National Workshop on Research Frontiers in Medical CPS
This report provides a summary of the 2014 CPS Workshop on Medical Frontiers in Research, which took place February 6-7, 2014 at the Waterview Conference Center in Arlington, VA. The workshop brought together multi-disciplinary experts from industry, academia, and government to discuss future CPS research challenges in this space. The participants were experts in the foundational science, engineering, and technology underlying next-generation cyber-physical systems, particularly in the context of the application domain of medicine, including medical devices. Through sessions on CPS research in sensing, diagnosis, and prosthetics, the attendees are defining a compelling research agenda in an area of scientific, technical, and engineering exploration with vast societal impact.
U.S.- German Workshop on the Internet of Things (IoT) / Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS): Report
The emerging new technology platforms, the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet (II), have tremendously accelerated the commercialization and adoption of cyber-physical systems (CPS) applications. A broad spectrum of research is required to overcome these challenges. Combining the specific strengths in the US and in Europe – in particular in Germany – in order to provide comprehensive research results appears to be a promising approach for accelerating research progress in this highly important area.

Energy CPS Workshop Report (2013)
The NSF CISE Program asked the academic community to participate in an NSF Workshop on Energy Cyber Physical Systems, which was held at the Water View Conference center in Arlington, Virginia on December 16-17, 2013. With over 100 participants and as many written contributions, and with day and a half of intensive discussions, the community identified many research challenges and opportunities related to energy CPS. This report is prepared per NSF’s request and summarizes key discussions from the Workshop.
The New Clockwork on Time-Critical Cyber-Physical Systems Draft Report (2012)
This report is the first full draft of the 2012 NSF Workshop on The New Clockwork on Time-Critical Cyber-Physical Systems that was held in Baltimore, MD on October 26-27, 2012. This workshop followed the 2012 NSF Workshop Planning Meeting on The New Clockwork for Time-Critical Cyber-Physical Systems held in June 11-12, 2012 in Dayton, Ohio. More information on the workshop can be found here.
A (Draft) Report from the Workshop on Developing Dependable and Secure Automotive Cyber-Physical Systems from Components (2011)
In 2008 the first automotive cyber-physical systems workshop was held in Michigan. That workshop established the value of and interest in automotive applications for the Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) research agenda. In late 2010 the co-chairs started work on this workshop in order to establish more concrete goals for and examples of application for CPS in the automotive domain. On March 17th and 18th of 2011 the Workshop for Developing Dependable and Secure Automotive Cyber-Physical Systems from Components (DDSACPS) was held in Troy, Michigan with sponsorship from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the United States Council on Automotive Research (USCAR). More information on the workshop can be found here.
High-Confidence Medical Devices: Cyber-Physical Systems for 21st Century Health Care (2009)
This government report presents the perspectives of the senior scientists of the NITRD Program's High Confidence Software and Systems (HCSS) Coordinating Group (CG), with input from experts from other Federal agencies, on the R&D challenges, needs, and strategies for developing and deploying the next generations of high-confidence1 medical devices, software, and systems. HCSS agencies whose missions are not medical device-specific have found it beneficial to partner in this area because medical device research challenges are similar, if not identical, to those within their purview. Recommendations from the 2004 HCDMSS Planning Meeting as well as the 2005 and 2007 HCMDSS Workshops were included in the report and can be accessed here, here, and here.
Research Recommendations for Future Energy Cyber-Physical Systems (2009)
This report is part of a series of prospective technical studies conducted by the High Confidence Software and Systems (HCSS) Coordinating Group (CG), one of eight Program Component Areas (PCAs) of the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Program, a part of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), Executive Office of the President. Sponsor agencies for the workshop include NIST, NSA, and NSF, along with the National Coordination Office (NCO) for NITRD. The NSTC is the primary mechanism in which the President coordinates science and technology across the Federal government domain. The report's objective is to focus national attention on the importance of identifying the R&D required for designing, deploying, and operating the Future Energy Cyber-Physical Systems (ENCPS). More information on the workshop can be found here.
A Community Report of the 2008 High Confidence Transportation Cyber-Physical Systems (HCTCPS) Workshop (2009)
This report summarizes the results of the High Confidence Transportation Cyber Physical Systems (HCTCPS) Workshop held November 18-20, 2008. The workshop brought together a diverse collection of stakeholders (researchers, certifiers, policy makers, end users) from a broad spectrum of science and technology (control engineering, certification, software engineering, aerospace, automotive, rail) to identify the community's shared vision of the technical and economic challenges we face in developing the next-generation, high-confidence, transportation cyber-physical systems. Our report establishes a 15-year roadmap setting forth an aggressive research agenda that will enable breakthroughs in affordable design, analysis and verification of more capable and efficient cyber-physical systems. More information on the workshop can be found here.
