Hello all,

I am writing to bring to your attention that the GCTC Tech Jam and IoT- Enabled Smart City Framework events will take place March 22-25, 2016. Registration information regarding both events is forthcoming. In the meantime, we hope you will save the date and plan to join us next month.

GCTC Tech Jam 2016

The Global City Teams Challenge (GCTC) Tech Jam will take place on the NIST campus in Gaithersburg, MD on March 22-23, 2016. The Tech Jam will provide opportunities for existing Action Clusters to present their project plans, discuss project measurements/KPIs and identify additional Action Cluster partners. It is also an opportunity for interested parties to create new Action Clusters.

Key Dates and Highlights

  • If you would like to guarantee that your team is able to make a plenary presentation at the Tech Jam, the deadline to submit your project worksheet is February 26, 2016. Instructions and a sample worksheet are available here.
  • In advance of the Tech Jam, we are asking all Action Cluster Team Leads to allocate 30 minutes for a Q&A call with US Ignite and myself.
  • On my behalf, Mariya Cherk (mariya.cherk@us-ignite.org) will be contacting all team leads to set up the Q&A calls.
  • Please note that the National Science Foundation will be holding "office hours" at the GCTC Team Jam. This is a great opportunity for teams with an interest in applying for EAGAR ( http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16036/nsf16036.jsp ) grant to speak with the NSF program officer. Grant application is due April 1, 2016.
  • The first day of the Tech Jam will feature presentations by invited GCTC partners and smart city leaders, followed by the presentations from registered Action Clusters (i.e. GCTC teams).
  • The second day of Tech Jam will focus on facilitated breakout sessions for team building and project planning.
  • City-only participants and technologists, who do not yet have a team but do have a project idea in mind, may submit a poster in order to reach out to additional project partners. If interested, please email a brief description of your project idea to Kyle Johnson ( kyle.johnson@nist.gov ) or Sokwoo Rhee ( sokwoo.rhee@nist.gov ).
  • GCTC plans to provide limited travel support to the city officials coming to the Tech Jam. Please contact Kyle Johnson ( kyle.johnson@nist.gov ) for further details.

Welcoming Our New Partner

GCTC has established a partnership with the R20 - Regions of Climate Action, an international non-profit that develops low-carbon, sustainable projects by bringing together representatives of government, technology and finance. The R20 believes a smart city is one that is sustainable, and so R20 aims to assist cities in identifying and applying solutions that best-fit their needs. We are very excited to partner with R20 and bring the opportunity of the GCTC to the R20 network.

IoT-Enabled Smart City Framework Workshop

NIST is establishing an international technical public working group to help develop an "IoT-Enabled Smart City Framework" that will identify pivotal points of interoperability across the many existing and deployed architectures. The motivation for this activity is the great interest in the Internet of Things (IoT) envisioned and deployed in smart cities around the world. At the present time, dozens of unconnected standardization and specification activities are competing for mind and market share throughout the world. This international group will be holding initial workshops immediately following the GCTC Tech Jam in the United States (March 24-25, 2016) and in Europe (April 14, 15 2016 in Rome). More details will be available soon. The collaboration project website is https://pages.nist.gov/smartcitiesarchitecture/

Reminders

SCOPE w/GCTC at CPS Week

The First International Workshop on Science of Smart City Operations and Platforms Engineering with Global City Teams Challenge (SCOPE w/GCTC) will take place on April 11th in Vienna, Austria. Please visit http://cps-vo.org/group/SCOPE-16 to learn more.

GCTC LinkedIn Group

Finally, GCTC has established a GCTC LinkedIn Group where members can exchange ideas, create new Action Clusters and reinforce existing Action Clusters with additional team members. We believe the LinkedIn Group should help facilitate GCTC team formation. For instance, if you are a current or former NSF grantee with an interest in connecting with members of GCTC Action Clusters, you could join the GCTC LinkedIn Group and submit a post. Likewise, if members of a GCTC Action Cluster would like to connect with a current or former NSF grantee, a posting on the GCTC LinkedIn group might be a good first step! Please contact Mariya Cherk with any questions about the GCTC LinkedIn Group - mariya.cherk@us-ignite.org.

Best Regards,
