Open position: Assistant professor in Mechatronics with a specialization in robotics design
Assistant professor in Mechatronics with a specialization in robotics design
KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Industrial Engineering and Management
KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe's leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden's largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as in architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.
Activities at the School of Industrial Engineering and Management cover the Engineering, Technological and Economic knowledge necessary to be able to develop new products, material and production processes in a sustainable fashion as concerns Technical management, Financial Profitability and the Environment. One precondition for innovation and enterprise is the study and application of basic physical and chemical phenomena as well as the integration of new, often multidisciplinary technologies, methods and tools. Core knowledge areas include Energy Technology, Industrial Design and Innovation, Product and Production Development, Materials Development, Micro and Nano Technology as well as Industrial Economics, Organisation and Management.
Department of Machine Design is active in research and education within product realization. Specific areas are: Machine elements, Machine Design, Mechatronics and Embedded control systems, Internal Combustion Engines, Integrated product development,Innovation and Industrial Design.
Subject field
Mechatronics with a specialization in robotics design.
Subject description
The subject includes principles, methods and tools for integration and optimization of mechatronic solutions including electronics, material combinations, sensors and active components in products where the function and flexibility to a high extent are realized in software.
Duties
The role includes research and education, in both of which collaboration and a positive influence on industry and society are greatly important.
The research activities include - independently and in collaboration - to perform research, initiate new research, attract research funds, establish new collaborations and supervise doctoral students. Given the multidisciplinary nature of the subject, collaboration across departments and schools at KTH is of high importance.
In terms of teaching, the assistant professor will be active in teaching and course development within areas such as mechatronics, robotics and embedded systems. Over time (s)he will be given overall responsibility for one or several courses, including development, examination and evaluation aspects.
The assistant professor will be given the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to gain accreditation that may allow them to take other teaching positions with higher eligibility requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance). Upon application, the assistant professor is eligible to be assessed for promotion to associate professor.
Eligibility
Candidates should have attained a Doctoral Degree or have acquired the equivalent academic expertise within the last seven years.
Grounds of assessment
Of the highest importance is the applicant's:
- documented scientific expertise within the subject according to the description above;
- documented experience of multidisciplinary research;
- very good English skills in written and verbal form.
Of second highest importance is the applicant's ability to show that they:
- are communicative; have a structured approach to work; focus on quality; are independent and have collaborative capabilities;
- have pedagogical skills within the area.
- have documented teaching expertise
- international experience;
It is also important that the applicant has:
- documented ability to attract research funds;
- industrial experience.
It is of further importance that the applicant who is appointed as assistant professor at KTH has experience from research environments other than KTH, equivalent to a post-doctorate period or doctorate degree from another institution. In more practical areas, experience from industry can be just as valuable as a traditional post-doctoral residency at another university. The applicant's ability to establish and develop cooperation within research and education is also important as is the applicant's long-term development potential. Similarly important is the applicant's ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and to disseminate information regarding research and development work. In addition, the applicant's expertise in developing and leading activities and personnel is important; this includes having knowledge about matters of diversity and equal treatment, with particular focus on gender equality.
Special grounds of assessment for promotion to associate professor
When assessing applications for promotion to associate professor, the applicant's ability to independently initiate and carry out research of high academic quality, published in international publications, and the applicant's ability to obtain financing for research operations will be assessed. The applicant's ability to independently establish new collaborations and research specializations is of the greatest importance, as is their demonstrated expertise in teaching and supervising.
