Dear Global City Teams Challenge (GCTC) community,

Exciting new year has finally arrived. 2017 will be a special year for GCTC as our activities move to creating and expanding the SuperClusters - groups of cities, communities and technology providers to produce blueprints of replicable, scalable, and sustainable smart cities and implement them collaboratively. Currently there are over 100 action clusters participating in GCTC, and 6 SuperClusters are actively growing in Transportation, City Platform, Public Safety, Energy/Water, Healthcare, and Public WiFi. GCTC members are also working on a couple of additional new SuperClusters, so stay tuned.

Several GCTC SuperCluster workshops will be hosted by the lead cities/organizations and NIST this year, starting with Transportation (Portland OR), City Platform (Kansas City, MO) in February.

  • Transportation SuperCluster Workshop: The Transportation SuperCluster workshop, hosted by the Portland OR team and co-hosted by NIST is now confirmed for February 1-2 at the Oregon Convention Center. Registration is open at this website. The SuperCluster workshop will discuss the future of smart transportation and make progress toward creating a shared blueprint of smart transportation technologies for cities and communities with diverse requirements. More than a dozen cities as well as many industry and academic stakeholders are expected to attend the workshop. To accommodate interest expressed by registrants in a technology showcase, solution demonstrations, and other related meetings a second day February 2nd has been scheduled. If you would like to be invited to planning meetings, topic specific meetings or meetings to discuss transportation related infrastructure please register at the above website even if your plans to attend are not yet final.
  • City Platform SuperCluster Workshop: Kansas City is hosting The City Platform SuperCluster Workshop on February 7-8, 2017, at the Think Big Partners, which is conveniently located in the heart of Kansas City. During the two-day workshop co-hosted by NIST, the participants will come in with a list of problems and questions on City Platform and cross-cutting data management issues, and leave with a concept of how to solve that list while building a smart city. Registration is open at this website.
  • Public Safety/Emergency/Disaster/Resilience SuperCluster (PSSC): PSSC is tentatively planning a SuperCluster workshop in the last week of February, 2017, in Washington DC. Contact the session chair Michael Dunaway if you have any questions on joining the PSSC workshop. You can receive updates by participating in the google group Public Safety, Emergency, Disaster, Resilience SuperCluster group.
  • Public WiFi SuperCluster: We are planning a webinar on January 26, 2017 between 11am-1pm US Eastern Time. The login information will be distributed later. A google group has been established at Public WiFi SuperCluster group.
  • Energy/Utility/Water and Healthcare SuperClusters are all ramping up and planning the next steps. More updates coming soon.

We keep building individual action clusters which will participate in the GCTC Expo in summer 2017, as well as ramping up additional SuperClusters. Contact me if you want to create a new action cluster to join the GCTC Expo in 2017.

Smart City Operations and Platforms Engineering (SCOPE) in partnership with Global City Teams Challenge (GCTC):

We invite you to submit a paper to the second workshop on Smart City Operations and Platforms Engineering (SCOPE) in partnership with Global City Teams Challenge (GCTC). The workshop is being organized as part of the CPS Week this year as well. We had a very successful conference last year with over a dozen peer-reviewed papers presented, and we expect this year will be even more successful. Many GCTC members are participating in the program committee and the selected papers will be included in the CPS Week proceedings. Here are the important dates and URL.

  • Submission of papers: February 3, 2017 (FIRM)
  • Author notification: February 17, 2017
  • Camera Ready: March 3, 2017
  • Workshop Date: April 21, 2017, Pittsburg, PA (Co-located with CPS Week)

The GCTC community has done a fantastic job helping develop and deploy smart cities and Internet of Things technologies across the globe. We will continue to make an impact as the platform to nurture and incubate the replicable, scalable, and sustainable advanced technologies to improve the quality of life in our cities and communities.

I hope to work with all of you in the upcoming GCTC activities and am looking forward to meeting you all at the SuperCluster workshops and the SCOPE-GCTC. Please don't hesitate to let me know if there is anything I can help in making your smart city/IoT projects successful.
