Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State University (www.aere.iastate.edu) invites applicants for one or more tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level. However, exceptional candidates at all levels may also be considered. We seek outstanding individuals with the potential to build strong research programs that will contribute to Aerospace Controls. Special emphasis is in the area of Autonomous Guidance and Flight Controls. Emerging research topics within this area might include (but are not limited to): UAV flight controls, on-orbit servicing, orbital debris removal, space robotics, space situational awareness (SSA), computational astrodynamics, autonomy, intelligent systems, autonomous system health management, flight control software, and other areas of guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) of both manned and unmanned vehicles in both air and space. The successful applicant will participate in all aspects of the department's mission, including developing a strong externally funded research program, teaching and supervising students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and participating in professional service. The department strongly emphasizes collaborative research and, hence, the successful candidate is expected to work in multidisciplinary teams with other active research programs in the university, both within and outside the College of Engineering, while taking advantage of the on-campus research centers and laboratories such as Virtual Reality and Applications Center (vrac.iastate.edu), the Center for Non-Destructive Evaluation (www.cnde.iastate.edu), and Ames Lab (ameslab.gov).

Required Education and Experience

An earned Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field is required at the start date of employment.

Candidates are required to have credentials commensurate with teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in engineering. Such credentials include a quality research program, professional recognitions, and scholarly impact.

Candidates at the level of Associate or Full Professor must, in addition to the above, demonstrate a strong record as evidenced by experience in supervising research of graduate and undergraduate students, and in writing, submitting, and administration of research proposals for state, federal, non-profit, and/or industrial sponsors. Accomplishments must be commensurate with expectations for the ranks at Iowa State University.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience in the areas of supervising undergraduate or graduate students, writing, submitting and administering research proposals and grants gained as a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow is desirable at the assistant professor level.

The Aerospace Engineering Department currently has 36 faculty and is housed in a $50 million state-of-the-art teaching and research complex. The College of Engineering consists of 8 departments, with 250+ faculty members and annual research expenditures exceeding $88 million.
