Fowze, Farhaan, Choudhury, Muhtadi, Forte, Domenic.  2022.  EISec: Exhaustive Information Flow Security of Hardware Intellectual Property Utilizing Symbolic Execution. 2022 Asian Hardware Oriented Security and Trust Symposium (AsianHOST). :1–6.
Hardware IPs are assumed to be roots-of-trust in complex SoCs. However, their design and security verification are still heavily dependent on manual expertise. Extensive research in this domain has shown that even cryptographic modules may lack information flow security, making them susceptible to remote attacks. Further, when an SoC is in the hands of the attacker, physical attacks such as fault injection are possible. This paper introduces EISec, a novel tool utilizing symbolic execution for exhaustive analysis of hardware IPs. EISec operates at the pre-silicon stage on the gate level netlist of a design. It detects information flow security violations and generates the exhaustive set of control sequences that reproduces them. We further expand its capabilities to quantify the confusion and diffusion present in cryptographic modules and to analyze an FSM's susceptibility to fault injection attacks. The proposed methodology efficiently explores the complete input space of designs utilizing symbolic execution. In short, EISec is a holistic security analysis tool to help hardware designers capture security violations early on and mitigate them by reporting their triggers.

Zhang, Jiaxing.  2022.  Cloud Security Analysis Based on Virtualization Technology. 2022 International Conference on Big Data, Information and Computer Network (BDICN). :519—522.
The experimental results demonstrated that, With the development of cloud computing, more and more people use cloud computing to do all kinds of things. However, for cloud computing, the most important thing is to ensure the stability of user data and improve security at the same time. From an analysis of the experimental results, it can be found that Cloud computing makes extensive use of technical means such as computing virtualization, storage system virtualization and network system virtualization, abstracts the underlying physical facilities into external unified interfaces, maps several virtual networks with different topologies to the underlying infrastructure, and provides differentiated services for external users. By comparing and analyzing the experimental results, it is clear that virtualization technology will be the main way to solve cloud computing security. Virtualization technology introduces a virtual layer between software and hardware, provides an independent running environment for applications, shields the dynamics, distribution and differences of hardware platforms, supports the sharing and reuse of hardware resources, provides each user with an independent and isolated computer environment, and facilitates the efficient and dynamic management and maintenance of software and hardware resources of the whole system. Applying virtualization technology to cloud security reduces the hardware cost and management cost of "cloud security" enterprises to a certain extent, and improves the security of "cloud security" technology to a certain extent. This paper will outline the basic cloud computing security methods, and focus on the analysis of virtualization cloud security technology
She, Cairui, Chen, Liwei, Shi, Gang.  2022.  TFCFI:Transparent Forward Fine-grained Control-Flow Integrity Protection. 2022 IEEE International Conference on Trust, Security and Privacy in Computing and Communications (TrustCom). :407—414.
Code-reuse attacks (including ROP/JOP) severely threaten computer security. Control-flow integrity (CFI), which can restrict control flow in legal scope, is recognised as an effective defence mechanism against code-reuse attacks. Hardware-based CFI uses Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) extensions with additional hardware modules to implement CFI and achieve better performance. However, hardware-based fine-grained CFI adds new instructions to the ISA, which can not be executed on old processors and breaks the compatibility of programs. Some coarse-grained CFI designs, such as Intel IBT, maintain the compatibility of programs but can not provide enough security guarantees. To balance the security and compatibility of hardware CFI, we propose Transparent Forward CFI (TFCFI). TFCFI implements hardware-based fine-grained CFI designs without changing the ISA. The software modification of TFCFI utilizes address information and hint instructions in RISC-V as transparent labels to mark the program. The hardware module of TFCFI monitors the control flow during execution. The program modified by TFCFI can be executed on old processors without TFCFI. Benefiting from transparent labels, TFCFI also solves the destination equivalence problem. The experiment on FPGA shows that TFCFI incurs negligible performance overhead (1.82% on average).

The advancement of modern multimedia and data-intensive classes of applications demands the development of hardware that delivers better performance. Due to the evolution of 5G, Edge-Computing, the Internet of Things, Software-Defined networks, etc., the data produced by the devices such as sensors are increasing. A software-Defined network is a powerful paradigm that is capable of automating networking and cloud computing. Software-Defined Network has controllers, devices, and applications which produce a huge amount of data. The processing of data inside the device as well as between the devices needs a better hardware architecture with more cores to ensure speedy performance. The System-on-Chip approach alone will not be capable to handle this dense core comprised of hardware. We have to blend Network-on-Chip along with System-on-Chip to increase the potential to include more cores capable to handle more threads. Artificial Intelligence, a key enabler in next-generation devices is capable of producing a better architecture design with optimized performance. In this paper, we are discussing and endeavouring how System-on-Chip, Network-on-Chip, Software-Defined Networks, and Artificial Intelligence can be physically, logically, and contextually incorporated to deliver improved computation and networking outcomes.

Lo, Pei-Yu, Chen, Chi-Wei, Hsu, Wei-Ting, Chen, Chih-Wei, Tien, Chin-Wei, Kuo, Sy-Yen.  2022.  Semi-supervised Trojan Nets Classification Using Anomaly Detection Based on SCOAP Features. 2022 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS). :2423—2427.
Recently, hardware Trojan has become a serious security concern in the integrated circuit (IC) industry. Due to the globalization of semiconductor design and fabrication processes, ICs are highly vulnerable to hardware Trojan insertion by malicious third-party vendors. Therefore, the development of effective hardware Trojan detection techniques is necessary. Testability measures have been proven to be efficient features for Trojan nets classification. However, most of the existing machine-learning-based techniques use supervised learning methods, which involve time-consuming training processes, need to deal with the class imbalance problem, and are not pragmatic in real-world situations. Furthermore, no works have explored the use of anomaly detection for hardware Trojan detection tasks. This paper proposes a semi-supervised hardware Trojan detection method at the gate level using anomaly detection. We ameliorate the existing computation of the Sandia Controllability/Observability Analysis Program (SCOAP) values by considering all types of D flip-flops and adopt semi-supervised anomaly detection techniques to detect Trojan nets. Finally, a novel topology-based location analysis is utilized to improve the detection performance. Testing on 17 Trust-Hub Trojan benchmarks, the proposed method achieves an overall 99.47% true positive rate (TPR), 99.99% true negative rate (TNR), and 99.99% accuracy.

Reddy, H Manohar, P C, Sajimon, Sankaran, Sriram.  2022.  On the Feasibility of Homomorphic Encryption for Internet of Things. 2022 IEEE 8th World Forum on Internet of Things (WF-IoT). :1—6.
Homomorphic encryption (HE) facilitates computing over encrypted data without using the secret keys. It is currently inefficient for practical implementation on the Internet of Things (IoT). However, the performance of these HE schemes may increase with optimized libraries and hardware capabilities. Thus, implementing and analyzing HE schemes and protocols on resource-constrained devices is essential to deriving optimized and secure schemes. This paper develops an energy profiling framework for homomorphic encryption on IoT devices. In particular, we analyze energy consumption and performance such as CPU and Memory utilization and execution time of numerous HE schemes using SEAL and HElib libraries on the Raspberry Pi 4 hardware platform and study energy-performance-security trade-offs. Our analysis reveals that HE schemes can incur a maximum of 70.07% in terms of energy consumption among the libraries. Finally, we provide guidelines for optimization of Homomorphic Encryption by leveraging multi-threading and edge computing capabilities for IoT applications. The insights obtained from this study can be used to develop secure and resource-constrained implementation of Homomorphic encryption depending on the needs of IoT applications.

In order to control users’ access to the information system, it is necessary to develop a security system that can work in real time and easily reconfigure. This problem can be solved using a fuzzy logic. In this paper the authors propose a fuzzy distribution system for access to the student assessment system, which takes into account the level of user access, identifier and the risk of attack during the request. This approach allows process fuzzy or incomplete information about the user and implement a sufficient level of confidential information protection.

The development of marine environment monitoring equipment has been improved by leaps and bounds in recent years. Numerous types of marine environment monitoring equipment have mushroomed with a wide range of high-performance capabilities. However, the existing data recording software cannot meet the demands of real-time and comprehensive data recording in view of the growing data types and the exponential data growth rate generated by various types of marine environment monitoring equipment. Based on the above-mentioned conundrum, this paper proposes a multi-source heterogeneous marine environmental data acquisition and storage method, which can record and replay multi-source heterogeneous data based upon the needs of real-time and accurate performance and also possess good compatibility and expandability.

Mašek, Vít, Novotný, Martin.  2022.  Versatile Hardware Framework for Elliptic Curve Cryptography. 2022 25th International Symposium on Design and Diagnostics of Electronic Circuits and Systems (DDECS). :80–83.
We propose versatile hardware framework for ECC. The framework supports arithmetic operations over P-256, Ed25519 and Curve25519 curves, enabling easy implementation of various ECC algorithms. Framework finds its application area e.g. in FIDO2 attestation or in nowadays rapidly expanding field of hardware wallets. As the design is intended to be ASIC-ready, we designed it to be area efficient. Hardware units are reused for calculations in several finite fields, and some of them are superior to previously designed circuits in terms of time-area product. The framework implements several attack countermeasures. It enables implementation of certain countermeasures even in later stages of design. The design was validated on SoC FPGA.

Armoush, Ashraf.  2022.  Towards the Integration of Security and Safety Patterns in the Design of Safety-Critical Embedded Systems. 2022 4th International Conference on Applied Automation and Industrial Diagnostics (ICAAID). 1:1–6.
The design of safety-critical embedded systems is a complex process that involves the reuse of proven solutions to fulfill a set of requirements. While safety is considered as the major requirement to be satisfied in safety-critical embedded systems, the security attacks can affect the security as well as the safety of these systems. Therefore, ensuring the security of the safety-critical embedded systems is as important as ensuring the safety requirements. The concept of design patterns, which provides common solutions to widely recurring design problems, have been extensively engaged in the design of the hardware and software in many fields, including embedded systems. However, there is an inadequacy of experience with security patterns in the field of safety-critical embedded systems. To address this problem, this paper proposes an approach to integrate security patterns with safety patterns in the design of safety-critical embedded systems. Moreover, it presents a customized representation for security patterns to be more relevant to the common safety patterns in the context of safety-critical embedded systems.

With the development of embedded systems towards networking and intelligence, the security threats they face are becoming more difficult to prevent. Existing protection methods make it difficult to monitor jump instructions and their target addresses for tampering by attackers at the low hardware implementation overhead and performance overhead. In this paper, a hardware-assisted security monitoring module is designed to monitor the integrity of jump instructions and jump addresses when executing programs. The proposed method has been implemented on the Xilinx Kintex-7 FPGA platform. Experiments show that this method is able to effectively monitor tampering attacks on jump instructions as well as target addresses while the embedded system is executing programs.

Electronic control units (ECU) have been widely used in modern resource-constrained automotive systems, com-municating through the controller area network (CAN) bus. However, they are still facing man-in-the-middle attacks in CAN bus due to the absence of a more effective authenti-cation/encryption mechanism. In this paper, to defend against the attacks more effectively, we propose a unified lightweight authenticated encryption that integrates recent prevalent cryp-tography standardization Isap and Ascon.First, we reuse the common permutation block of ISAP and Asconto support authenticated encryption and encryption/decryption. Second, we provide a flexible and independent switch between authenticated encryption and encryption/decryption to support specific application requirements. Third, we adopt standard CAESAR hardware API as the interface standard to support compatibility between different interfaces or platforms. Experimental results show that our proposed unified lightweight authenticated encryption can reduce 26.09% area consumption on Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA board compared with the state-of-the-arts. In addition, the encryption overhead of the proposed design for transferring one CAN data frame is \textbackslashmathbf10.75 \textbackslashmu s using Asconand \textbackslashmathbf72.25 \textbackslashmu s using ISAP at the frequency of 4 MHz on embedded devices.
Kumar, Aytha Ramesh, Sharmila, Yadavalli.  2022.  FPGA Implementation of High Performance Hybrid Encryption Standard. 2022 International Conference on Recent Trends in Microelectronics, Automation, Computing and Communications Systems (ICMACC). :103–107.
Now a day's data hacking is the main issue for cloud computing, protecting a data there are so many methods in that one most usable method is the data Encryption. Process of Encryption is the converting a data into an un readable form using encryption key, encoded version that can only be read with authorized access to the decryption key. This paper presenting a simple, energy and area efficient method for endurance issue in secure resistive main memories. In this method, by employing the random characteristics of the encrypted data encoded by the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) as well as a rotational shift operation. Random Shifter is simple hardware implementation and energy efficient method. It is considerably smaller than that of other recently proposed methods. Random Shifter technique used for secure memory with other error correction methods. Due to their reprogram ability, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) are a popular choice for the hardware implementation of cryptographic algorithms. The proposed random shifter algorithm for AES and DES (Hybrid) data is implemented in the VIRTEX FPGA and it is efficient and suitable for hardware-critical applications. This Paper is implemented using model sim and Xilinx 14.5 version.

A vast volume of digital electronic health records is exchanged across the open network in this modern era. Cross all the existing security methods, encryption is a dependable method of data security. This study discusses an encryption technique for digital medical images that uses chaos combined with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). In fact, Rossler's and Lorenz's chaotic systems along with DNA encoding are used in the suggested medical image cryptographic system. Chaos is used to create a random key stream. The DNA encoding rules are then used to encode the key and the input original image. A hardware design of the proposed scheme is implemented on the Zedboard development kit. The experimental findings show that the proposed cryptosystem has strong security while maintaining acceptable hardware performances.

Embedded devices are becoming increasingly pervasive in safety-critical systems of the emerging cyber-physical world. While trusted execution environments (TEEs), such as ARM TrustZone, have been widely deployed in mobile platforms, little attention has been given to deployment on real-time cyber-physical systems, which present a different set of challenges compared to mobile applications. For safety-critical cyber-physical systems, such as autonomous drones or automobiles, the current TEE deployment paradigm, which focuses only on confidentiality and integrity, is insufficient. Computation in these systems also needs to be completed in a timely manner (e.g., before the car hits a pedestrian), putting a much stronger emphasis on availability. To bridge this gap, we present RT-TEE, a real-time trusted execution environment. There are three key research challenges. First, RT-TEE bootstraps the ability to ensure availability using a minimal set of hardware primitives on commodity embedded platforms. Second, to balance real-time performance and scheduler complexity, we designed a policy-based event-driven hierarchical scheduler. Third, to mitigate the risks of having device drivers in the secure environment, we designed an I/O reference monitor that leverages software sandboxing and driver debloating to provide fine-grained access control on peripherals while minimizing the trusted computing base (TCB).We implemented prototypes on both ARMv8-A and ARMv8-M platforms. The system is tested on both synthetic tasks and real-life CPS applications. We evaluated rover and plane in simulation and quadcopter both in simulation and with a real drone.

The excess buffering of packets in network elements, also referred to as bufferbloat, results in high latency. Considering the requirements of traffic generated by video conferencing systems like Zoom, cloud rendered gaming platforms like Google Stadia, or even video streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube, timeliness of such traffic is important. Ensuring low latency to IP flows with a high throughput calls for the application of Active Queue Management (AQM) schemes. This introduces yet another problem as the co-existence of scalable and classic congestion controls leads to the starvation of classic TCP flows. Technologies such as Low Latency Low Loss Scalable Throughput (L4S) and the corresponding dual queue coupled AQM, DualPI2, provide a robust solution to these problems. However, their deployment on hardware targets such as programmable switches is quite challenging due to the complexity of algorithms and architectural constraints of switching ASICs. In this study, we provide proof of concept implementations of two AQMs that enable the co-existence of scalable and traditional TCP traffic, namely DualPI2 and the preceding single-queue PI2 AQM, on an Intel Tofino switching ASIC. Given the fixed operation of the switch’s traffic manager, we investigate to what extent it is possible to implement a fully RFC-compliant version of the two AQMs on the Tofino ASIC. The study shows that an appropriate split between control and data plane operations is required while we also exploit fixed functionality of the traffic manager to support such solutions.

The exponential growth of IoT-type systems has led to a reconsideration of the field of database management systems in terms of storing and handling high-volume data. Recently, many real-time Database Management Systems(DBMS) have been developed to address issues such as security, managing concurrent access to stored data, and optimizing data query performance. This paper studies methods that allow to reduce the temporal validity range for common DBMS. The primary purpose of IoT edge devices is to generate data and make it available for machine learning or statistical algorithms. This is achieved inside the Knowledge Discovery in Databases process. In order to visualize and obtain critical Data Mining results, all the device-generated data must be made available as fast as possible for selection, preprocessing and data transformation. In this research we investigate if IoT edge devices can be used with common DBMS proper configured in order to access data fast instead of working with Real Time DBMS. We will study what kind of transactions are needed in large IoT ecosystems and we will analyze the techniques of controlling concurrent access to common resources (stored data). For this purpose, we built a series of applications that are able to simulate concurrent writing operations to a common DBMS in order to investigate the performance of concurrent access to database resources. Another important procedure that will be tested with the developed applications will be to increase the availability of data for users and data mining applications. This will be achieved by using field indexing.

Cavorsi, Matthew, Gil, Stephanie.  2022.  Providing Local Resilience to Vulnerable Areas in Robotic Networks. 2022 International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA). :4929–4935.
We study how information flows through a multi-robot network in order to better understand how to provide resilience to malicious information. While the notion of global resilience is well studied, one way existing methods provide global resilience is by bringing robots closer together to improve the connectivity of the network. However, large changes in network structure can impede the team from performing other functions such as coverage, where the robots need to spread apart. Our goal is to mitigate the trade-off between resilience and network structure preservation by applying resilience locally in areas of the network where it is needed most. We introduce a metric, Influence, to identify vulnerable regions in the network requiring resilience. We design a control law targeting local resilience to the vulnerable areas by improving the connectivity of robots within these areas so that each robot has at least 2F+1 vertex-disjoint communication paths between itself and the high influence robot in the vulnerable area. We demonstrate the performance of our local resilience controller in simulation and in hardware by applying it to a coverage problem and comparing our results with an existing global resilience strategy. For the specific hardware experiments, we show that our control provides local resilience to vulnerable areas in the network while only requiring 9.90% and 15.14% deviations from the desired team formation compared to the global strategy.

The long-living nature and byte-addressability of persistent memory (PM) amplifies the importance of strong memory protections. This paper develops temporal exposure reduction protection (TERP) as a framework for enforcing memory safety. Aiming to minimize the time when a PM region is accessible, TERP offers a complementary dimension of memory protection. The paper gives a formal definition of TERP, explores the semantics space of TERP constructs, and the relations with security and composability in both sequential and parallel executions. It proposes programming system and architecture solutions for the key challenges for the adoption of TERP, which draws on novel supports in both compilers and hardware to efficiently meet the exposure time target. Experiments validate the efficacy of the proposed support of TERP, in both efficiency and exposure time minimization.
