Data secure deletion operation in storage media is an important function of data security management. The internal physical properties of SSDs are different from hard disks, and data secure deletion of disks can not apply to SSDs directly. Copyback operation is used to improve the data migration performance of SSDs but is rarely used due to error accumulation issue. We propose a data securely deletion algorithm based on copyback operation, which improves the efficiency of data secure deletion without affecting the reliability of data. First, this paper proves that the data secure delete operation takes a long time on the channel bus, increasing the I/O overhead, and reducing the performance of the SSDs. Secondly, this paper designs an efficient data deletion algorithm, which can process read requests quickly. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the response time of read requests by 21% and the response time of delete requests by 18.7% over the existing algorithm.

Bálint, Krisztián.  2022.  Data Security Structure of a Students’ Attendance Register Based on Security Cameras and Blockchain Technology. 2022 IEEE 22nd International Symposium on Computational Intelligence and Informatics and 8th IEEE International Conference on Recent Achievements in Mechatronics, Automation, Computer Science and Robotics (CINTI-MACRo). :000185–000190.
The latest, modern security camera systems record numerous data at once. With the utilization of artificial intelligence, these systems can even compose an online attendance register of students present during the lectures. Data is primarily recorded on the hard disk of the NVR (Network Video Recorder), and in the long term, it is recommended to save the data in the blockchain. The purpose of the research is to demonstrate how university security cameras can be securely connected to the blockchain. This would be important for universities as this is sensitive student data that needs to be protected from unauthorized access. In my research, as part of the practical implementation, I therefore also use encryption methods and data fragmentation, which are saved at the nodes of the blockchain. Thus, even a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) type attack may be easily repelled, as data is not concentrated on a single, central server. To further increase security, it is useful to constitute a blockchain capable of its own data storage at the faculty itself, rather than renting data storage space, so we, ourselves may regulate the conditions of operation, and the policy of data protection. As a practical part of my research, therefore, I created a blockchain called UEDSC (Universities Data Storage Chain) where I saved the student's data.

Walzberg, Julien, Zhao, Fu, Frost, Kali, Carpenter, Alberta, Heath, Garvin A..  2021.  Exploring Social Dynamics of Hard-Disk Drives Circularity with an Agent-Based Approach. 2021 IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech). :1–6.
By 2025, it is estimated that installed data storage in the U.S. will be 2.2 Zettabytes, generating about 50 million units of end-of-life hard-disk drives (HDDs) per year. The circular economy (CE) tackles waste issues by maximizing value retention in the economy, for instance, through reuse and recycling. However, the reuse of hard disk drives is hindered by the lack of trust organizations have toward other means of data removal than physically destroying HDDs. Here, an agent-based approach explores how organizations' decisions to adopt other data removal means affect HDDs' circularity. The model applies the theory of planned behavior to model the decisions of HDDs end-users. Results demonstrate that the attitude (which is affected by trust) of end-users toward data-wiping technologies acts as a barrier to reuse. Moreover, social pressure can play a significant role as organizations that adopt CE behaviors can set an example for others.

Tan, Cheng, Zhang, Lijun, Bao, Liang.  2020.  A Deep Exploration of BitLocker Encryption and Security Analysis. 2020 IEEE 20th International Conference on Communication Technology (ICCT). :1070–1074.
Due to the popularity of Windows system, BitLocker is widely used as a built-in disk encryption tool. As a commercial application, the design of BitLocker has to consider a capability of disaster recovery, which helps a user to recover data stored on encrypted disk when a regular access is not available. In this case, it will inevitably lead to some security risks when using BitLocker. We have a deep exploration of BitLocker encryption mechanism in this paper. We present the decryption method of encrypted VMK in case of system partition encryption and non-system partition encryption, respectively. VMK is the core key in BitLocker, with which the encrypted partition or the entire disk can be further decrypted. As for security analysis on BitLocker, we firstly make a difficulty analysis of brute force cracking on BitLocker keys, and then we analyze a possible threat caused by key theft. Based on this, we propose a few countermeasures about BitLocker usage. Additionally, we give some suggestions about security enhancement of BitLocker encryption.

Wang, W.-C., Ho, C.-C., Chang, Y.-M., Chang, Y.-H..  2020.  Challenges and Designs for Secure Deletion in Storage Systems. 2020 Indo – Taiwan 2nd International Conference on Computing, Analytics and Networks (Indo-Taiwan ICAN). :181–189.
Data security has risen to be one of the most critical concerns of computer professionals. Tighter legal requirements now exist for the purpose of protecting user data from unauthorized uses and for both preserving and erasing/sanitizing data records to meet legal compliance requirements. To meet the data security requirement, many secure (data) deletion techniques have been proposed to deal with the data security concerns from different system layers. This paper surveys the state-of-the-art secure deletion techniques that have been designed to pursue higher efficiency, verifiability, and portability for emerging types of hard disk drives and flash-based solid-state drives. Meanwhile, the pros and cons of implementing secure deletion in different system layers are also discussed, so as to assist in pursuing better secure deletion designs for future storage systems.

Zhang, Xiao, Wang, Yanqiu, Wang, Qing, Zhao, Xiaonan.  2019.  A New Approach to Double I/O Performance for Ceph Distributed File System in Cloud Computing. 2019 2nd International Conference on Data Intelligence and Security (ICDIS). :68—75.
Block storage resources are essential in an Infrastructure-as-a-Service(IaaS) cloud computing system. It is used for storing virtual machines' images. It offers persistent storage service even the virtual machine is off. Distribute storage systems are used to provide block storage services in IaaS, such as Amazon EBS, Cinder, Ceph, Sheepdog. Ceph is widely used as the backend block storage service of OpenStack platform. It converts block devices into objects with the same size and saves them on the local file system. The performance of block devices provided by Ceph is only 30% of hard disks in many cases. One of the key issues that affect the performance of Ceph is the three replicas for fault tolerance. But our research finds that replicas are not the real reason slow down the performance. In this paper, we present a new approach to accelerate the IO operations. The experiment results show that by using our storage engine, Ceph can offer faster IO performance than the hard disk in most cases. Our new storage engine provides more than three times up than the original one.

Zhu, Weijun, Liu, Yichen, Fan, Yongwen, Liu, Yang, Liu, Ruitong.  2019.  If Air-Gap Attacks Encounter the Mimic Defense. 2019 9th International Conference on Information Science and Technology (ICIST). :485—490.
Air-gap attacks and mimic defense are two emerging techniques in the field of network attack and defense, respectively. However, direct confrontation between them has not yet appeared in the real world. Who will be the winner, if air-gap attacks encounter mimic defense? To this end, a preliminary analysis is conducted for exploring the possible the strategy space of game according to the core principles of air-gap attacks and mimic defense. On this basis, an architecture model is proposed, which combines some detectors for air-gap attacks and mimic defense devices. First, a Dynamic Heterogeneous Redundancy (DHR) structure is employed to be on guard against malicious software of air-gap attacks. Second, some detectors for air-gap attacks are used to detect some signal sent by air-gap attackers' transmitter. Third, the proposed architecture model is obtained by organizing the DHR structure and the detectors for air-gap attacks with some logical relationship. The simulated experimental results preliminarily confirm the power of the new model.

S. Zafar, M. B. Tiwana.  2015.  "Discarded hard disks ??? A treasure trove for cybercriminals: A case study of recovered sensitive data from a discarded hard disk" 2015 First International Conference on Anti-Cybercrime (ICACC). :1-6.

The modern malware poses serious security threats because of its evolved capability of using staged and persistent attack while remaining undetected over a long period of time to perform a number of malicious activities. The challenge for malicious actors is to gain initial control of the victim's machine by bypassing all the security controls. The most favored bait often used by attackers is to deceive users through a trusting or interesting email containing a malicious attachment or a malicious link. To make the email credible and interesting the cybercriminals often perform reconnaissance activities to find background information on the potential target. To this end, the value of information found on the discarded or stolen storage devices is often underestimated or ignored. In this paper, we present the partial results of analysis of one such hard disk that was purchased from the open market. The data found on the disk contained highly sensitive personal and organizational data. The results from the case study will be useful in not only understanding the involved risk but also creating awareness of related threats.
