Cloud computing is widely believed to be the future of computing. It has grown from being a promising idea to one of the fastest research and development paradigms of the computing industry. However, security and privacy concerns represent a significant hindrance to the widespread adoption of cloud computing services. Likewise, the attributes of the cloud such as multi-tenancy, dynamic supply chain, limited visibility of security controls and system complexity, have exacerbated the challenge of assessing cloud risks. In this paper, we conduct a real-world case study to validate the use of a supply chaininclusive risk assessment model in assessing the risks of a multicloud SaaS application. Using the components of the Cloud Supply Chain Cyber Risk Assessment (CSCCRA) model, we show how the model enables cloud service providers (CSPs) to identify critical suppliers, map their supply chain, identify weak security spots within the chain, and analyse the risk of the SaaS application, while also presenting the value of the risk in monetary terms. A key novelty of the CSCCRA model is that it caters for the complexities involved in the delivery of SaaS applications and adapts to the dynamic nature of the cloud, enabling CSPs to conduct risk assessments at a higher frequency, in response to a change in the supply chain.
In recent years, there has been progress in applying information technology to industrial control systems (ICS), which is expected to make the development cost of control devices and systems lower. On the other hand, the security threats are becoming important problems. In 2017, a command injection issue on a data logger was reported. In this paper, we focus on the risk assessment in security design for data loggers used in industrial control systems. Our aim is to provide a risk assessment method optimized for control devices and systems in such a way that one can prioritize threats more preciously, that would lead work resource (time and budget) can be assigned for more important threats than others. We discuss problems with application of the automotive-security guideline of JASO TP15002 to ICS risk assessment. Consequently, we propose a three-phase risk assessment method with a novel Risk Scoring Systems (RSS) for quantitative risk assessment, RSS-CWSS. The idea behind this method is to apply CWSS scoring systems to RSS by fixing values for some of CWSS metrics, considering what the designers can evaluate during the concept phase. Our case study with ICS employing a data logger clarifies that RSS-CWSS can offer an interesting property that it has better risk-score dispersion than the TP15002-specified RSS.
One step involved in the security engineering process is threat modeling. Threat modeling involves understanding the complexity of the system and identifying all of the possible threats, regardless of whether or not they can be exploited. Proper identification of threats and appropriate selection of countermeasures reduces the ability of attackers to misuse the system. This paper presents a quantitative, integrated threat modeling approach that merges software and attack centric threat modeling techniques. The threat model is composed of a system model representing the physical and network infrastructure layout, as well as a component model illustrating component specific threats. Component attack trees allow for modeling specific component contained attack vectors, while system attack graphs illustrate multi-component, multi-step attack vectors across the system. The Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) is leveraged to provide a standardized method of quantifying the low level vulnerabilities in the attack trees. As a case study, a railway communication network is used, and the respective results using a threat modeling software tool are presented.
