Ozdemir, M. A., Elagoz, B., Soy, A. Alaybeyoglu, Akan, A..  2020.  Deep Learning Based Facial Emotion Recognition System. 2020 Medical Technologies Congress (TIPTEKNO). :1—4.

In this study, it was aimed to recognize the emotional state from facial images using the deep learning method. In the study, which was approved by the ethics committee, a custom data set was created using videos taken from 20 male and 20 female participants while simulating 7 different facial expressions (happy, sad, surprised, angry, disgusted, scared, and neutral). Firstly, obtained videos were divided into image frames, and then face images were segmented using the Haar library from image frames. The size of the custom data set obtained after the image preprocessing is more than 25 thousand images. The proposed convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture which is mimics of LeNet architecture has been trained with this custom dataset. According to the proposed CNN architecture experiment results, the training loss was found as 0.0115, the training accuracy was found as 99.62%, the validation loss was 0.0109, and the validation accuracy was 99.71%.

Hikawa, H..  2020.  Nested Pipeline Hardware Self-Organizing Map for High Dimensional Vectors. 2020 27th IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS). :1–4.
This paper proposes a hardware Self-Organizing Map (SOM) for high dimensional vectors. The proposed SOM is based on nested architecture with pipeline processing. Due to homogeneous modular structure, the nested architecture provides high expandability. The original nested SOM was designed to handle low-dimensional vectors with fully parallel computation, and it yielded very high performance. In this paper, the architecture is extended to handle much higher dimensional vectors by using sequential computation, which requires multiple clocks to process a single vector. To increase the performance, the proposed architecture employs pipeline computation, in which search of winner neuron and weight vector update are carried out simultaneously. Operable clock frequency for the system was 60 MHz, and its throughput reached 15012 million connection updates per second (MCUPS).

Friedrich, T., Menzel, S..  2019.  Standardization of Gram Matrix for Improved 3D Neural Style Transfer. 2019 IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence (SSCI). :1375—1382.

Neural Style Transfer based on convolutional neural networks has produced visually appealing results for image and video data in the recent years where e.g. the content of a photo and the style of a painting are merged to a novel piece of digital art. In practical engineering development, we utilize 3D objects as standard for optimizing digital shapes. Since these objects can be represented as binary 3D voxel representation, we propose to extend the Neural Style Transfer method to 3D geometries in analogy to 2D pixel representations. In a series of experiments, we first evaluate traditional Neural Style Transfer on 2D binary monochromatic images. We show that this method produces reasonable results on binary images lacking color information and even improve them by introducing a standardized Gram matrix based loss function for style. For an application of Neural Style Transfer on 3D voxel primitives, we trained several classifier networks demonstrating the importance of a meaningful convolutional network architecture. The standardization of the Gram matrix again strongly contributes to visually improved, less noisy results. We conclude that Neural Style Transfer extended by a standardization of the Gram matrix is a promising approach for generating novel 3D voxelized objects and expect future improvements with increasing graphics memory availability for finer object resolutions.

Dabas, K., Madaan, N., Arya, V., Mehta, S., Chakraborty, T., Singh, G..  2019.  Fair Transfer of Multiple Style Attributes in Text. 2019 Grace Hopper Celebration India (GHCI). :1—5.

To preserve anonymity and obfuscate their identity on online platforms users may morph their text and portray themselves as a different gender or demographic. Similarly, a chatbot may need to customize its communication style to improve engagement with its audience. This manner of changing the style of written text has gained significant attention in recent years. Yet these past research works largely cater to the transfer of single style attributes. The disadvantage of focusing on a single style alone is that this often results in target text where other existing style attributes behave unpredictably or are unfairly dominated by the new style. To counteract this behavior, it would be nice to have a style transfer mechanism that can transfer or control multiple styles simultaneously and fairly. Through such an approach, one could obtain obfuscated or written text incorporated with a desired degree of multiple soft styles such as female-quality, politeness, or formalness. To the best of our knowledge this work is the first that shows and attempt to solve the issues related to multiple style transfer. We also demonstrate that the transfer of multiple styles cannot be achieved by sequentially performing multiple single-style transfers. This is because each single style-transfer step often reverses or dominates over the style incorporated by a previous transfer step. We then propose a neural network architecture for fairly transferring multiple style attributes in a given text. We test our architecture on the Yelp dataset to demonstrate our superior performance as compared to existing one-style transfer steps performed in a sequence.

Khalil, Kasem, Eldash, Omar, Kumar, Ashok, Bayoumi, Magdy.  2019.  Self-Healing Approach for Hardware Neural Network Architecture. 2019 IEEE 62nd International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems (MWSCAS). :622–625.
Neural Network is used in many applications and guarding its performance against faults is a research challenge. Self-healing neural network is a promising concept for achieving reliability, which is the ability to detect and fix a fault in the system automatically. Most of the current self-healing neural network are based on replication of hardware nodes which causes significant area overhead. The proposed self-healing approach results in a modest area overhead and it is suitable for complex neural network. The proposed method is based on a shared operation and a spare node in each layer which compensates for any faulty node in the layer. Each faulty node will be compensated by its neighbor node, and the neighbor node performs the faulty node as well as its own operations sequentially. In the case the neighbor is faulty, the spare node will compensate for it. The proposed method is implemented using VHDL and the simulation results are obtained using Altira 10 GX FPGA for a different number of nodes. The area overhead is very small for a complex network. The reliability of the proposed method is studied and compared with the traditional neural network.

Bernardi, Mario Luca, Cimitile, Marta, Martinelli, Fabio, Mercaldo, Francesco.  2019.  Keystroke Analysis for User Identification Using Deep Neural Networks. 2019 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN). :1–8.

The current authentication systems based on password and pin code are not enough to guarantee attacks from malicious users. For this reason, in the last years, several studies are proposed with the aim to identify the users basing on their typing dynamics. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network architecture aimed to discriminate between different users using a set of keystroke features. The idea behind the proposed method is to identify the users silently and continuously during their typing on a monitored system. To perform such user identification effectively, we propose a feature model able to capture the typing style that is specific to each given user. The proposed approach is evaluated on a large dataset derived by integrating two real-world datasets from existing studies. The merged dataset contains a total of 1530 different users each writing a set of different typing samples. Several deep neural networks, with an increasing number of hidden layers and two different sets of features, are tested with the aim to find the best configuration. The final best classifier scores a precision equal to 0.997, a recall equal to 0.99 and an accuracy equal to 99% using an MLP deep neural network with 9 hidden layers. Finally, the performances obtained by using the deep learning approach are also compared with the performance of traditional decision-trees machine learning algorithm, attesting the effectiveness of the deep learning-based classifiers in the domain of keystroke analysis.

Kos, J., Fischer, I., Song, D..  2018.  Adversarial Examples for Generative Models. 2018 IEEE Security and Privacy Workshops (SPW). :36–42.

We explore methods of producing adversarial examples on deep generative models such as the variational autoencoder (VAE) and the VAE-GAN. Deep learning architectures are known to be vulnerable to adversarial examples, but previous work has focused on the application of adversarial examples to classification tasks. Deep generative models have recently become popular due to their ability to model input data distributions and generate realistic examples from those distributions. We present three classes of attacks on the VAE and VAE-GAN architectures and demonstrate them against networks trained on MNIST, SVHN and CelebA. Our first attack leverages classification-based adversaries by attaching a classifier to the trained encoder of the target generative model, which can then be used to indirectly manipulate the latent representation. Our second attack directly uses the VAE loss function to generate a target reconstruction image from the adversarial example. Our third attack moves beyond relying on classification or the standard loss for the gradient and directly optimizes against differences in source and target latent representations. We also motivate why an attacker might be interested in deploying such techniques against a target generative network.

Chakraborty, K., Saha, G..  2016.  Off-line voltage security assessment of power transmission systems using UVSI through artificial neural network. 2016 International Conference on Intelligent Control Power and Instrumentation (ICICPI). :158–162.

Coming days are becoming a much challenging task for the power system researchers due to the anomalous increase in the load demand with the existing system. As a result there exists a discordant between the transmission and generation framework which is severely pressurizing the power utilities. In this paper a quick and efficient methodology has been proposed to identify the most sensitive or susceptible regions in any power system network. The technique used in this paper comprises of correlation of a multi-bus power system network to an equivalent two-bus network along with the application of Artificial neural network(ANN) Architecture with training algorithm for online monitoring of voltage security of the system under all multiple exigencies which makes it more flexible. A fast voltage stability indicator has been proposed known as Unified Voltage Stability Indicator (UVSI) which is used as a substratal apparatus for the assessment of the voltage collapse point in a IEEE 30-bus power system in combination with the Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN) to establish the accuracy of the status of the system for different contingency configurations.
