Most Depth Image Based Rendering (DIBR) techniques produce synthesized images which contain non-uniform geometric distortions affecting edges coherency. This type of distortions are challenging for common image quality metrics. Morphological filters maintain important geometric information such as edges across different resolution levels. There is inherent congruence between the morphological pyramid decomposition scheme and human visual perception. In this paper, multi-scale measure, morphological pyramid peak signal-to-noise ratio MP-PSNR, based on morphological pyramid decomposition is proposed for the evaluation of DIBR synthesized images. It is shown that MPPSNR achieves much higher correlation with human judgment compared to the state-of-the-art image quality measures in this context.

Document image binarization is performed to segment foreground text from background text in badly degraded documents. In this paper, a comprehensive survey has been conducted on some state-of-the-art document image binarization techniques. After describing these document images binarization techniques, their performance have been compared with the help of various evaluation performance metrics which are widely used for document image analysis and recognition. On the basis of this comparison, it has been found out that the adaptive contrast method is the best performing method. Accordingly, the partial results that we have obtained for the adaptive contrast method have been stated and also the mathematical model and block diagram of the adaptive contrast method has been described in detail.

Discrete fractional Fourier transform (DFRFT) is a generalization of discrete Fourier transform. There are a number of DFRFT proposals, which are useful for various signal processing applications. This paper investigates practical solutions toward the construction of unconditionally secure communication systems based on DFRFT via cross-layer approach. By introducing a distort signal parameter, the sender randomly flip-flops between the distort signal parameter and the general signal parameter to confuse the attacker. The advantages of the legitimate partners are guaranteed. We extend the advantages between legitimate partners via developing novel security codes on top of the proposed cross-layer DFRFT security communication model, aiming to achieve an error-free legitimate channel while preventing the eavesdropper from any useful information. Thus, a cross-layer strong mobile communication secure model is built.

H.264/advanced video coding surveillance video encoders use the Skip mode specified by the standard to reduce bandwidth. They also use multiple frames as reference for motion-compensated prediction. In this paper, we propose two techniques to reduce the bandwidth and computational cost of static camera surveillance video encoders without affecting detection and recognition performance. A spatial sampler is proposed to sample pixels that are segmented using a Gaussian mixture model. Modified weight updates are derived for the parameters of the mixture model to reduce floating point computations. A storage pattern of the parameters in memory is also modified to improve cache performance. Skip selection is performed using the segmentation results of the sampled pixels. The second contribution is a low computational cost algorithm to choose the reference frames. The proposed reference frame selection algorithm reduces the cost of coding uncovered background regions. We also study the number of reference frames required to achieve good coding efficiency. Distortion over foreground pixels is measured to quantify the performance of the proposed techniques. Experimental results show bit rate savings of up to 94.5% over methods proposed in literature on video surveillance data sets. The proposed techniques also provide up to 74.5% reduction in compression complexity without increasing the distortion over the foreground regions in the video sequence.
