In this work, a new particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based optimization algorithm, and the idea of a running match is introduced and employed in a non-linear system PID controller design. This algorithm aims to modify the formula of velocity calculating of the general PSO method to increase the diversity of the searching process. In this process of designing an optimal PID controller for a non-linear system, the three gains of the PID controller form a particle, which is a parameter vector and will be updated iteratively. Many of those particles then form a population. To reach the PID gains which are optimum, using modified velocity updating formula and position updating formula, the position of all particles of the population will be moved into the optimization direction. In the meanwhile, an objective function may be minimized as the performance of the controller get improved. To corroborate the controller functioning of this method, a non-linear system known as inverted pendulum will be controlled by the designed PID controller. The results confirm that the new method can show excellent performance in the non-linear PID controller design task.

The NEREIDA wave generation power plant installed in Mutriku, Spain is a multiple Oscillating Water Column (OWC) plant. The power takeoff consists of a Wells turbine coupled to a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). The stalling behavior present in the Wells turbine limits the generated power. This paper presents the modeling and a Harmony Search Algorithm-based airflow control of the OWC. The Harmony Search Algorithm (HSA) is proposed to help overcome the limitations of a traditionally tuned PID. An investigation between HSA-tuned controller and the traditionally tuned controller has been performed. Results of the controlled and uncontrolled plant prove the effectiveness of the airflow control and the superiority of the HSA-tuned controller.

In this article, we introduce a new method for computing fixed points of a class of iterated functions in a finite time, by exponentiating linear multivalued operators. To better illustrate this approach and show that our method can give fast and accurate results, we have chosen two well-known applications which are difficult to handle by usual techniques. First, we apply the exponentiation of linear operators to a digital filter in order to get a fine approximation of its behavior at an arbitrary time. Second, we consider a PID controller. To get a reliable estimate of its control function, we apply the exponentiation of a bundle of linear operators. Note that, our technique can be applied in a more general setting, i.e. for any multivalued linear map and that the general method is also introduced in this article.

Akhtar, Nabeel, Matta, Ibrahim, Raza, Ali, Wang, Yuefeng.  2018.  EL-SEC: ELastic Management of Security Applications on Virtualized Infrastructure. IEEE INFOCOM 2018 - IEEE Conference on Computer Communications Workshops (INFOCOM WKSHPS). :778-783.

The concept of Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) aims to move Network Functions (NFs) out of dedicated hardware devices into software that runs on commodity hardware. A single NF consists of multiple VNF instances, usually running on virtual machines in a cloud infrastructure. The elastic management of an NF refers to load management across the VNF instances and the autonomic scaling of the number of VNF instances as the load on the NF changes. In this paper, we present EL-SEC, an autonomic framework to elastically manage security NFs on a virtualized infrastructure. As a use case, we deploy the Snort Intrusion Detection System as the NF on the GENI testbed. Concepts from control theory are used to create an Elastic Manager, which implements various controllers - in this paper, Proportional Integral (PI) and Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) - to direct traffic across the VNF Snort instances by monitoring the current load. RINA (a clean-slate Recursive InterNetwork Architecture) is used to build a distributed application that monitors load and collects Snort alerts, which are processed by the Elastic Manager and an Attack Analyzer, respectively. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is used to steer traffic through the VNF instances, and to block attack traffic. Our results show that virtualized security NFs can be easily deployed using our EL-SEC framework. With the help of real-time graphs, we show that PI and PID controllers can be used to easily scale the system, which leads to quicker detection of attacks.
