Li, Shushan, Wang, Meng, Zhang, Hong.  2022.  Deadlock Detection for MPI Programs Based on Refined Match-sets. 2022 IEEE International Conference on Cluster Computing (CLUSTER). :82–93.

Deadlock is one of the critical problems in the message passing interface. At present, most techniques for detecting the MPI deadlock issue rely on exhausting all execution paths of a program, which is extremely inefficient. In addition, with the increasing number of wildcards that receive events and processes, the number of execution paths raises exponentially, further worsening the situation. To alleviate the problem, we propose a deadlock detection approach called SAMPI based on match-sets to avoid exploring execution paths. In this approach, a match detection rule is employed to form the rough match-sets based on Lazy Lamport Clocks Protocol. Then we design three refining algorithms based on the non-overtaking rule and MPI communication mechanism to refine the match-sets. Finally, deadlocks are detected by analyzing the refined match-sets. We performed the experimental evaluation on 15 various programs, and the experimental results show that SAMPI is really efficient in detecting deadlocks in MPI programs, especially in handling programs with many interleavings.

Grundmann, Matthias, Baumstark, Max, Hartenstein, Hannes.  2022.  On the Peer Degree Distribution of the Bitcoin P2P Network. 2022 IEEE International Conference on Blockchain and Cryptocurrency (ICBC). :1–5.
A recent spam wave of IP addresses in the Bitcoin P2P network allowed us to estimate the degree distribution of reachable peers. The resulting distribution indicates that about half of the reachable peers run with Bitcoin Core’s default setting of a maximum of 125 concurrent connections and nearly all connection slots are taken. We validate this result empirically. We use our observations of the spam wave to group IP addresses that belong to the same peer. By doing this grouping, we improve on previous measurements of the number of reachable peers and show that simply counting IP addresses overestimates the number of reachable peers by 15 %. We revalidate previous work by using our observations to estimate the number of unreachable peers.

The increasing number of vehicles registered demands for safe and secure carparks due to increase in vehicle theft. The current Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems is a single authentication system and hence it is not secure. Therefore, this research has developed a double authentication system by combing ANPR with a Quick Response (QR) code system to create ANPR-DAS that improves the security at a carpark. It has yielded an accuracy of up to 93% and prevents car theft at a car park.

Sekhar, P. Chandra, Murthy, T. S. N..  2022.  Physical Layer Security using SMO. 2022 International Conference on Computing, Communication and Power Technology (IC3P). :98–102.
Physical Layer Security (PLS) is used to accomplish perfect secure communication between intended network nodes, while the eavesdropper gets zero information. In this paper, a smart antenna technology i.e., Massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) technology is being used to enhance the secrecy performance of a 5G communication network. Small scale Rayleigh fading channels, as well as large scale pathway loss, have to be taken into consideration. An eavesdropper with multiple antennas, an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay with multi antenna has been proposed. Spider Monkey Algorithm (SMO) is used in adding Artificial Noise (AN) for refining secrecy rate. The findings revealed that the suggested technique improves the security and the quality of Wireless communication.

Teichel, Kristof, Lehtonen, Tapio, Wallin, Anders.  2021.  Assessing Time Transfer Methods for Accuracy and Reliability : Navigating the Time Transfer Trade-off Triangle. 2021 Joint Conference of the European Frequency and Time Forum and IEEE International Frequency Control Symposium (EFTF/IFCS). :1—4.
We present a collected overview on how to assess both the accuracy and reliability levels and relate them to the required effort, for different digital methods of synchronizing clocks. The presented process is intended for end users who require time synchronization but are not certain about how to judge at least one of the aspects. It can not only be used on existing technologies but should also be transferable to many future approaches. We further relate this approach to several examples. We discuss in detail the approach of medium-range White Rabbit connections over dedicated fibers, a method that occupies an extreme corner in the evaluation, where the effort is exceedingly high, but also yields excellent accuracy and significant reliability.

Bichhawat, Abhishek, McCall, McKenna, Jia, Limin.  2021.  Gradual Security Types and Gradual Guarantees. 2021 IEEE 34th Computer Security Foundations Symposium (CSF). :1—16.
Information flow type systems enforce the security property of noninterference by detecting unauthorized data flows at compile-time. However, they require precise type annotations, making them difficult to use in practice as much of the legacy infrastructure is written in untyped or dynamically-typed languages. Gradual typing seamlessly integrates static and dynamic typing, providing the best of both approaches, and has been applied to information flow control, where information flow monitors are derived from gradual security types. Prior work on gradual information flow typing uncovered tensions between noninterference and the dynamic gradual guarantee- the property that less precise security type annotations in a program should not cause more runtime errors. This paper re-examines the connection between gradual information flow types and information flow monitors to identify the root cause of the tension between the gradual guarantees and noninterference. We develop runtime semantics for a simple imperative language with gradual information flow types that provides both noninterference and gradual guarantees. We leverage a proof technique developed for FlowML and reduce noninterference proofs to preservation proofs.

This paper describes the process of developing data visualisations to enhance a commercial software platform for combating insider threat, whose existing UI, while perfectly functional, was limited in its ability to allow analysts to easily spot the patterns and outliers that visualisation naturally reveals. We describe the design and development process, proceeding from initial tasks/requirements gathering, understanding the platform’s data formats, the rationale behind the visualisations’ design, and then refining the prototype through gathering feedback from representative domain experts who are also current users of the software. Through a number of example scenarios, we show that the visualisation can support the identified tasks and aid analysts in discovering and understanding potentially risky insider activity within a large user base.

The importance of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) gains more and more weight in our daily business and private life. Although CPS build the backbone for major trends, like Industry 4.0 and connected vehicles, they also propose many new challenges. One major challenge can be found in achieving a high level of security within such highly connected environments, in which an unpredictable number of heterogeneous systems with often-distinctive characteristics interact with each other. In order to develop high-level security solutions, system designers must eventually know the current level of security of their specification. To this end, security metrics and scoring frameworks are essential, as they quantitatively express security of a given design or system. However, existing solutions may not be able to handle the proposed challenges of CPS, as they mainly focus on one particular system and one specific attack. Therefore, we aim to elaborate a security scoring mechanism, which can efficiently be used in CPS, while considering all essential information. We break down each system within the CPS into its core functional blocks and analyze a variety of attacks in terms of exploitability, scalability of attacks, as well as potential harm to targeted assets. With this approach, we get an overall assessment of security for the whole CPS, as it integrates the security-state of all interacting systems. This allows handling the presented complexity in CPS in a more efficient way, than existing solutions.

Cryptography is one of the important aspect of data and information security. The security strength of cryptographic algorithms rely on the secrecy and randomness of keys. In this study, bitwise operations, Fisher-Yates shuffling algorithm, and cipher text mapping are integrated in the proposed TRNG key generator for One-Time Pad cryptography. Frequency monobit, frequency within a block, and runs tests are performed to evaluate the key randomness. The proposed method is also evaluated in terms of avalanche effect and brute force attack. Tests results indicate that the proposed method generates more random keys and has a higher level of security compared with the usual OTP using PRNG and TRNGs that do not undergo a refining phase.
