HARD PROBLEM(S) ADDRESSED: Resilient Architectures

This project is developing OS and architecture techniques to defend against potential microarchitectural side-channel attacks on embedded computing platforms for safety-critical systems. The project covers the hardware problems of (1) resilient architectures (primary) and (2) security-metrics-driven evaluation, design, development and deployment.

PUBLIC ACCOMPLISHMENT HIGHLIGHTS:

In this quarter, we have made the following progress.

  • We have continued to develop speculative execution based attacks. As part of this effort, we validated our previously developed SpectreRewind covert channel, which targets non-pipelined floating point division unit, on several recent intel architectures and found that our attacks work well after minor adaptation.
  • We have continued to develop denial-of-service attack and prevention techniques. As part of this effort, we continued to evaluate Intel RDT technologies and their effectiveness in preventing DoS attacks on recent intel architectures.
