Two postdoc positions are available in the area of transportation cyber physical systems at Institute for Software Integrated Systems, Vanderbilt University. Applicants must have a solid research background and interest in working on cutting-edge practically motivated problems in the area of
- computer vision enabled sensor networks https://www.i24motion.org and
- artificial intelligence enabled transportation management systems https://news.vanderbilt.edu/2020/07/21/vanderbilt-tennessee-department-of-transportation-awarded-grant-from-u-s-department-of-transportation-to-enhance-i-24-smart-corridor-development-with-artificial-intelligence/. Both projects allow a full spectrum of activities ranging from theoretical innovation to large-scale real-world deployments. Both projects are measured by the research impact and ability to deliver solutions to our partners.
The postdoctoral scholars will be expected to address fundamental challenges in these areas and work with a team of graduate students and other collaborators active in the project. Outstanding candidates with research interests that are broadly related to the above projects will be considered. Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellence in research, and must also have a high skill level in software development, systematic testing, and deployment. Experience with distributed systems, automated software build deployment pipelines, and GPU computing are all desirable.
The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of extension dependent on performance. The preferable starting date is in January 2022. However, earlier, and later start dates are available.

Our lab uses emerging sensing technologies, models, data, and advanced analytics to understand mobility systems so that we can improve them. Our research projects explore the interplay between autonomous vehicles and phantom traffic jams. We exploit large mobility datasets to understand urban traffic congestion at city scales. We build artificial intelligence tools to improve vehicle control systems and traffic management systems. Our work has been featured in ABC’s Good Morning America, Wired, MIT Technology review, and numerous other outlets.
About the Institute for Software Integrated Systems:
ISIS (www.isis.vanderbilt.edu) is a premier research institute in the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering with 14 faculty, 6 research scientists, 30 staff engineers, and 35 graduate students with sponsored funding that currently exceeds $18 million a year. ISIS is closely affiliated with the EECS Department (eecs.vuse.vanderbilt.edu), which currently has 49 full-time faculty, 523 undergraduate students, and 200 graduate students
