Visible to the public CPS: Synergy: Cyber-Enabled Repetitive Motions in Rehabilitation

The project aims to advance both foundations and enabling technologies in the field of human-machine systems, with a focus on exercise and rehabilitation machines. A human interacting with an advanced (actively-controlled) exercise machine is the ultimate cyber-physical system due to the presence of multi-level loop closures, large-scale, coupled musculoskeletal dynamics, conflicting objectives between human vs. machine controllers, uncertain dynamics and limited sensing.

Visible to the public CPS: Synergy: Collaborative Research: Fault Tolerant Brain Implantable Cyber-Physical System

Episodic brain disorders such as epilepsy have a considerable impact on a patient's productivity and quality of life and may be life-threatening when seizures cannot be controlled with medications. We will create a second generation brain-implantable sensing and stimulating device (BISSD) based on CPS principles and practice. The BISSD will be composed of modules placed intracranially to continuously monitor brain state and vulnerability to seizure and intervene with electrical stimulation to block the development of seizure.

Visible to the public CPS: Small: Integrated Reconfigurable Control and Moving Target Defense for Secure Cyber-Physical Systems

Abstract: Cyber-physical systems have been increasingly subject to cyber-attacks including code injection and code reuse attacks. With the tightly coupled nature of cyber components with the physical domain, these attacks have the potential to cause significant damage if critical applications such as automobiles are compromised. Instruction Set Randomization and Address Space Randomization have been commonly proposed to address these types of attacks.

Visible to the public Model-based Specification Reconstruction

This poster surveys results in the area of specification reconstruction for system models obtained by teams from the University of Maryland and Fraunhofer Center as part of the NSF CPS Frontier program "CyberCardia". The specification-reconstruction problem is this: given a system model, and a template of a property describing a pattern of behavior, determine how to complete the template so that the resulting property holds for all behaviors of the system.

Visible to the public GASP: Geolocated Allergen Sensing Platform

This project combines Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) and gigabit networks to address major health concerns due to air pollution. A wide range of health outcomes are affected by air pollution. In March 2014 the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report that in 2012 alone, a staggering 7 million people died as a result of air pollution exposure, one in eight of the total global deaths. A major component of this pollution is airborne particulate matter. Approximately 50 million Americans have allergic diseases.

Visible to the public CPS: Synergy: Collaborative Research: Learning Control Sharing Strategies for Assistive Cyber-Physical Systems

Assistive machines such as robotic arms and powered wheelchairs promote independence and ability in those with severe motor impairments. As the field of assistive robotics progresses rapidly, these devices are becoming more capable and dextrous and as a result, higher dimensional and harder to control. The dimensionality mismatch between high-dimensional robots and low-dimensional control interfaces requires the control space to be partitioned into control modes. For full control of the robot the user switches between these partitions and this is known as mode switching.

Visible to the public CPS: Synergy: Executable Distributed Medical Best Practice Guidance System for Emergency Care from Rural to Regional Center Hosp

Executable Medical Best Practice Guidance (EMBG) system is designed to prevent unjustified deviation from medical best practice guidance across a hospital network, consisting of rural hospitals, regional center hospital and ambulance service.

Like a GPS-enabled navigation system, EMBG provides patient state by state treatment advises based on dynamic patients' conditions and clinical environment. The safety of the EMBG system is built upon formal theoretical verifications and clinical validations in collaboration with medical professionals.
