Visible to the public CPS Frontier: Foundations of Resilient CybEr-Physical Systems (FORCES)

The exponential growth of information and communication technologies have caused a profound shift in the way humans engineer systems leading to the emergence of closed-loop systems involving strong integration and coordination of physical and cyber components, often referred to as cyber-physical systems (CPSs). Because of these disruptive changes, physical systems can now be attacked through cyberspace and cyberspace can be attacked through physical means.

Visible to the public Creating a Community Infrastructure for Interoperable Emergency Connectivity

Abstract: First responders to disasters need a complete picture of the community's status in order to accurately assess the condition of the inhabitants and organize available resources to save lives, protect the environment and prevent further damage in the community. However, under disaster conditions, normal communication methods will be interrupted, including landline and cell phones, internet connectivity and power.

Visible to the public CPS: Breakthrough: Understanding Sub-Second Instabilities in a Global Cyber-Physical System

Abstract: Future real-world CPS will likely be large, messy and evolve in a decentralized way due to changing market conditions, yielding a system comprising many heterogeneous components that may have incompatible communication protocols (e.g. subsets of actuators and sensors built by different manufacturers and/or operated by competing entities). The number operating at any one time may also fluctuate, creating a time-dependent ecology comprising anywhere from a few hundred to several million distinct pieces of hardware, software or mechanical components.

Visible to the public CRII: CPS: Design of Secure and Dependable Next Generation Automotive Cyber-Physical Systems

Abstract: This project aims at simultaneous integration of security and dependability while minimizing energy consumption and ensuring that real-time constraints of the application are not violated. We have proposed novel electronic control unit (ECU) architectures for real-time automotive CPS that incorporate security and dependability primitives with low resources and energy overhead.

Visible to the public CPS: Breakthrough: Low-cost Continuous Virtual Energy Audits in Cyber-Physical Building Envelope

Storms and floods cause 70% of the world's natural disasters. These natural disasters affect on average up to 200 million people in a year, with economic losses between US$50 billion to US$100 billion annually. Monitoring these flash flood prone areas proactively in populated areas and providing just-in-time notification to the city officials can help in effectively prioritizing, controlling, and mitigating such disastrous events.
