Visible to the public Coordinated Resource Management of Cyber-Physical-Social Power Systems

Abstract:

Large-scale critical infrastructure systems, including energy and transportation networks, comprise millions of individual elements (human, software and hardware) whose actions may be inconsequential in isolation but profoundly important in aggregate. The focus of this project is on the coordination of these elements via ubiquitous sensing, communications, computation, and control, with an emphasis on the electric grid.

Visible to the public CPS: Synergy: Collaborative Research: A CPS for Proactive Traffic Management to Enhance Mobility and Sustainability

Abstract:

The objective of the project is to demonstrate the synergistic use of a cyber-physical infrastructure consisting of smart-phone devices; cloud computing, wireless communication, and intelligent transportation systems to manage vehicles in the complex urban network - through the use of traffic controls, route advisories and road pricing - to jointly optimize drivers' mobility and the sustainability goals of reducing energy usage and improving air quality.

Visible to the public Foundations for Understanding Volatility and Improving Operational Reliability

Abstract:

This project addresses the impact of the integration of renewable intermittent generation and the integration of sophisticated sensing, communication, and actuation capabilities into the grid on the system's reliability, volatility, and economic efficiency, and seeks to develop system architectures, along with associated optimization and control algorithms to balance such trade--offs. The high level goals of this project can be stated as follows:

Visible to the public Methods for Network-Enabled Embedded Monitoring and Control for High-Performance Buildings

The objective of this research is to develop methods for the operation and design of cyber physical systems in general, and energy efficient buildings in particular. The approach is to use an integrated framework: create models of complex systems from data; then design the associated sensing-communication-computation-control system; and finally create distributed estimation and control algorithms, along with execution platforms to implement these algorithms.  A special emphasis is placed on adaptation.

Visible to the public CPS:Small: Transforming a City's Transportation Infrastructure Through an Embedded Pervasive Communication Network

The objective of this inter-disciplinary research is to develop new technologies that transform the streets of a city into a hybrid transportation/communication system, called the Intelligent Road (iRoad), where autonomous wireless devices are co-located with traffic signals, forming a wireless network that fuses real-time transportation data from all over the city to support a wide range of new applications.
