Visible to the public A Unified System Theoretic Framework for Cyber Attack-Resilient Power Grid

Abstract:

We developed an analytical and computational framework for vulnerability analysis of dynamical power networks to link and node-based attacks. For stochastic link failure attacks, we provided a systematic procedure for ranking links (transmission lines) of power network in the order of their critical importance to maintain synchronization among network generators.

Visible to the public A Novel Human Centric CPS to Improve Motor/Cognitive Assessment and Enable Adaptive Rehabilitation

Abstract:

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common motor disorder of central origin in childhood and affects at least 2 children per 1000 live births every year. This project will research new methods and tools in motor/cognitive assessment for small children (5-8 years old) with Cerebral Palsy.

Visible to the public A Hybrid Detector Network for Nuclear and Radioactive Threat Detection

Abstract:

Identification and tracking of nuclear materials is a problem of obvious importance, and has attracted a great deal of engineering effort in the recent past. The technical challenges of this problem are compounded by the fact that nuclear materials that are of interest vary widely in their concentrations and compositions, and are often concealed with shielding material, and buried in background radiation that is always present, but varies widely in strength and spectrum over time and space.

Visible to the public A Framework for Validation and Monitoring of Robotic Surgery Systems

Abstract:

The objective of this research is the development of a framework for assessing the reliability and safety of robotic surgery systems during development, field testing, and general deployment. The framework uses accurate simulations to assess pre-clinical reliability before deployment. After deployment, the framework uses data collection through online monitoring of the system as it is being used in the field, followed by analysis to obtain assessments of operational reliability and safety.

Visible to the public A Cyber Physical Framework for Remedial Action Schemes in Large Power Networks

Abstract:

Despite the integration of advanced cyber technologies in monitoring and communication in electric power networks, design and development of control systems, and in particular, Remedial Action Schemes (RAS) tend to evolve at a very slow pace. The objective of this research is to study new distributed system modeling techniques to faithfully capture the physical and communication system characteristics as well as the "wave" like propagation of some disturbances.

Visible to the public A Cross-Layer Approach to Taming Cyber-Physical Uncertainties in Vehicular Wireless Networking and Platoon Control

Transforming the traditional, single-vehicle-based safety and efficiency control, next-generation vehicles are expected to form platoons for optimizing roadway usage and fuel efficiency while ensuring transportation safety. Two basic enablers of vehicle platooning are vehicular wireless networking and platoon control.

Visible to the public A CPS Approach to Robot Design

Abstract:

Analytically predicting the behavior of physical systems is generally not possible. For example, the three dimensional nature of physical systems makes it provably impossible to express closed--form analytical solutions even simple systems. This limitation makes experimentation the primary modality for designing new cyber--physical systems.
