Shen, Shen, Tedrake, Russ.  2020.  Sampling Quotient-Ring Sum-of-Squares Programs for Scalable Verification of Nonlinear Systems. 2020 59th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC). :2535–2542.
This paper presents a novel method, combining new formulations and sampling, to improve the scalability of sum-of-squares (SOS) programming-based system verification. Region-of-attraction approximation problems are considered for polynomial, polynomial with generalized Lur'e uncertainty, and rational trigonometric multi-rigid-body systems. Our method starts by identifying that Lagrange multipliers, traditionally heavily used for S-procedures, are a major culprit of creating bloated SOS programs. In light of this, we exploit inherent system properties-continuity, convexity, and implicit algebraic structure-and reformulate the problems as quotient-ring SOS programs, thereby eliminating all the multipliers. These new programs are smaller, sparser, less constrained, yet less conservative. Their computation is further improved by leveraging a recent result on sampling algebraic varieties. Remarkably, solution correctness is guaranteed with just a finite (in practice, very small) number of samples. Altogether, the proposed method can verify systems well beyond the reach of existing SOS-based approaches (32 states); on smaller problems where a baseline is available, it computes tighter solution 2-3 orders of magnitude faster.

Bavishi, Jatna, Shaikh, Mohammed Saad, Patel, Reema.  2020.  Scalable and Efficient Mutual Authentication Strategy in Fog Computing. 2020 8th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Cloud Computing, Services, and Engineering (MobileCloud). :77–83.
Fog Computing paradigm extends the cloud computing to the edge of the network to resolve the problem of latency but this introduces new security and privacy issues. So, it is necessary that a user must be authenticated before initiating data exchange in order to preserve the integrity. Secondly, in fog computing, fog node must also be authorized for ensuring the proper behaviour of fog node and validate that the fog node is not corrupted. Hence, we proposed a mutual authentication scheme which verifies both the fog node and the end user before the transfer of data. Traditional authentication protocol uses digital certificate and digital signature which faces the problem of scalability and more complexity respectively. So, in the proposed architecture, the problem of scalability and complexity is reduced to a greater extent compared to traditional authentication techniques. The proposed scheme also ensures multi-factor authentication of the user before sending the data and it is way too efficient.

Adelt, Peer, Koppelmann, Bastian, Mueller, Wolfgang, Scheytt, Christoph.  2020.  A Scalable Platform for QEMU Based Fault Effect Analysis for RISC-V Hardware Architectures. MBMV 2020 - Methods and Description Languages for Modelling and Verification of Circuits and Systems; GMM/ITG/GI-Workshop. :1–8.
Fault effect simulation is a well-established technique for the qualification of robust embedded software and hardware as required by different safety standards. Our article introduces a Virtual Prototype based approach for the fault analysis and fast simulation of a set of automatically generated and target compiled software programs. The approach scales to different RISC-V ISA standard subset configurations and is based on an instruction and hardware register coverage for automatic fault injections of permanent and transient bitflips. The analysis of each software binary evaluates its opcode type and register access coverage including the addressed memory space. Based on this information dedicated sets of fault injected hardware models, i.e., mutants, are generated. The simulation of all mutants conducted with the different binaries finally identifies the cases with a normal termination though executed on a faulty hardware model. They are identified as a subject for further investigations and improvements by the implementation of additional hardware or software safety countermeasures. Our final evaluation results with automatic C code generation, compilation, analysis, and simulation show that QEMU provides an adequate efficient platform, which also scales to more complex scenarios.

As the latest evolving architecture of space networks, Internet of Satellites (IoSat) is regarded as a promising paradigm in the future beyond 5G and 6G wireless systems. However, due to the extremely large number of satellites and open links, it is challenging to ensure communication security in IoSat, especially for wiretap resisting. To the best of our knowledge, it is an entirely new problem to study the security issue in IoSat, since existing works concerning physical layer security (PLS) in satellite networks mainly focused on the space-to-terrestrial links. It is also noted that, we are the first to investigate PLS problem in IoSat. In light of this, we present in this paper an analytical model of PLS in IoSat where a terrestrial transmitter delivers its information to multi-satellite in the presence of eavesdroppers. By adopting the key parameters such as satellites' deployment density, minimum elevation angle, and orbit height, two major secrecy metric including average secrecy capacity and probability are derived and analyzed. As demonstrated by extensive numerical results, the presented theoretical framework can be utilized to efficiently evaluate the secrecy performance of IoSat, and guide the design and optimization for communication security in such systems.

Sun, Yu, Zhao, Xiang.  2020.  On the Secrecy Performance of Random Mobile User in Visible Light Communication Systems. 2020 12th International Conference on Communication Software and Networks (ICCSN). :172–177.
For most of the current research on physical-layer security in indoor visible light communication (VLC) systems, a static communication environment was mainly considered, where secure communication about static users was investigated. However, much secure problems remain to be settled about mobile users. To improve the secrecy performance of mobile users, a two-dimensional circular optical atto-cell with security protected zone is considered. The proposed VLC systems include a LED transmitter Alice, a mobile user Bob and a passive eavesdropper Eve. A typical random waypoint model (RWP) being assumed, the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and secrecy throughput (ST) have been investigated for mobile users in VLC systems. The theoretical analysis results have been verified through Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation results show that the secrecy performance of mobile users in VLC can be improved by enlarging the radius of protected zone, and it also depends on the target secrecy rate and the LEDs' configuration.

The analysis of large-scale software and finding security vulnerabilities while its evolving is difficult without using supplementary tools, because of the size and complexity of today's systems. However just by looking at a report, doesn't transmit the overall picture of the system in terms of security vulnerabilities and its evolution throughout the project lifecycle. Software visualization is a program comprehension technique used in the context of the present and explores large amounts of information precisely. For the analysis of security vulnerabilities of complex software systems, Secure Codecity with Evolution is an interactive 3D visualization tool that can be utilized. Its studies techniques and methods are used for graphically illustrating security aspects and the evolution of software. The Main goal of the proposed Framework defined as uplift, simplify, and clarify the mental representation that a software engineer has of a software system and its evolution in terms of its security. Static code was visualised based on a city metaphor, which represents classes as buildings and packages as districts of a city. Identified Vulnerabilities were represented in a different color according to the severity. To visualize a number of different aspects, A large variety of options were given. Users can evaluate the evolution of the security vulnerabilities of a system on several versions using Matrices provided which will help users go get an overall understanding about security vulnerabilities varies with different versions of software. This framework was implemented using SonarQube for software vulnerability detection and ThreeJs for implementing the City Metaphor. The evaluation results evidently show that our framework surpasses the existing tools in terms of accuracy, efficiency and usability.

Singh, P., Saroj, S. K..  2020.  A Secure Data Dynamics and Public Auditing Scheme for Cloud Storage. 2020 6th International Conference on Advanced Computing and Communication Systems (ICACCS). :695–700.
Cloud computing is an evolving technology that provides data storage and highly fast computing services at a very low cost. All data stored in the cloud is handled by their cloud service providers or the caretaker of the cloud. The data owner is concerned about the authenticity and reliability of the data stored in the cloud as the data owners. Data can be misappropriated or altered by any unauthorized user or person. This paper desire to suggest a secure public auditing scheme applying third party auditors to authenticate the privacy, reliability, and integrity of data stored in the cloud. This proposed auditing scheme composes the use of the AES-256 algorithm for encryption, SHA-512 for integrity check and RSA-15360 for public-key encryption. And perform data dynamics operation which deals with mostly insertion, deletion, and, modification.

Open wireless channels make a wireless ad hoc network vulnerable to various security attacks, so it is crucial to design a routing protocol that can defend against the attacks of malicious nodes. In this paper, we first measure the trust value calculated by the node behavior in a period to judge whether the node is trusted, and then combine other QoS requirements as the routing metrics to design a secure routing approach. Moreover, we propose a deep learning-based model to learn the routing environment repeatedly from the data sets of packet flow and corresponding optimal paths. Then, when a new packet flow is input, the model can output a link set that satisfies the node's QoS and trust requirements directly, and therefore the optimal path of the packet flow can be obtained. The extensive simulation results show that compared with the traditional optimization-based method, our proposed deep learning-based approach cannot only guarantee more than 90% accuracy, but also significantly improves the computation time.

This study presents an open standards-based information system supporting democratisation and consumer empowerment through flexibility activation. This study describes a functional technical reference infrastructure: a secure, standard-based and viable communication backbone for flexibility activation. The infrastructure allows connection, registering, activation and reporting for different types of granular consumer flexibility. The flexibility sources can be directly controllable set points of chargers and stationary batteries, as well as controllable loads. The proposed communication system sees all these flexibility provisions as distributed energy resources in a wider sense, and the architecture allows consumer-level integration of different energy systems. This makes new flexibility sources fully available to the balancing responsible entities in a viable and realistically implementable manner. The proposed reference architecture, as implemented in the FLEXCoop project, relies on established open standards as it is based on the Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) and OAuth2/OpenID standards and the corresponding IEC 62746-10 standard, and it covers interfacing towards other relevant standards. The security and access implications are addressed by the OpenID security layer built on top of the OAuth2 and integrated with the OpenADR standard. To address the data protection and privacy aspects, the architecture is designed on the least knowledge principle.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a new trend where employees use their personal devices to connect to their organization networks to access sensitive information and work-related systems. One of the primary challenges in BYOD is to securely delete company data when an employee leaves an organization. In common BYOD programs, the personal device in use is completely wiped out. This may lead to the deletion of personal data during exit procedures. Due to performance and deletion latency, erasure of data in most file systems today results in unlinking the file location and marking data blocks as unused. This may suffice the need of a normal user trying to delete unwanted files but the file content is not erased from the data blocks and can be retrieved with the help of various data recovery and forensic tools. In this paper, we discuss: (1) existing work related to secure deletion, and (2) secure and selective deletion methods that delete only the required files or directories without tampering personal data. We present two per-file deletion methods: Overwriting data and Encryption based deletion which erase specific files securely. Our proposed per-file deletion methods reduce latency and performance overheads caused by overwriting an entire disk.

An identity-based distributed key management scheme for airborne ad hoc networks is analyzed. It is demonstrated that in the generation phase of user private key, the user identity certificate is transmitted in the public channel, so that the attacker can use the intercepted identity certificate to fake the legitimate node and cheat the distributed key generation center to generate private key for it. Then, an improved authentication scheme is proposed. It constructs the signature of timestamp using the private key of the user node as authentication proof, so that the attacker can't forge the authentication information. It is showed that the improved scheme can effectively resist the forgery attack, and further reduce the computing cost of user nodes while realizing all the functions of the original scheme.

Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANET) are liable to the Black, Worm and Gray Hole attacks because of the broadcast nature of the wireless medium and a lack of authority standards. Black Hole attack covers the situation when a malicious node uses its routing protocol in order to publicize itself for having the shortest route to the destination node. This aggressive node publicizes its availability of fresh routes regardless of checking its routing table. The consequences of these attacks could lead not only to the broken infrastructure, but could cause hammering people's lives. This paper aims to investigate and compare methods for preventing such types of attacks in a VANET.

With the rapid development of smart grids and the continuous deepening of informatization, while realizing remote telemetry and remote control of massive data-based grid operation, electricity information network security problems have become more serious and prominent. A method for electricity information network security situation prediction method based on improved deep belief network is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the affinity propagation clustering algorithm is used to determine the depth of the deep belief network and the number of hidden layer nodes based on sample parameters. Secondly, continuously adjust the scaling factor and crossover probability in the differential evolution algorithm according to the population similarity. Finally, a chaotic search method is used to perform a second search for the best individuals and similarity centers of each generation of the population. Simulation experiments show that the proposed algorithm not only enhances the generalization ability of electricity information network security situation prediction, but also has higher prediction accuracy.

Intentional interference such as spoofing is an emerging threat to GPS receivers used in both civilian and defense applications. With the majority of smartphones relying on GPS for positioning and navigation, the vulnerability of these phones to spoofing attacks is an issue of security concern. In this paper, it is demonstrated that is easy to successfully spoof a smartphone using a simplistic spoofing technique. A spoofing signal is generated using open-source signal simulator and transmitted using a low-cost SDR. In view of the tremendously increasing usage of GPS enabled smartphones, it is necessary to develop suitable countermeasures for spoofing. This work carries significance as it would help in understanding the effects of spoofing at various levels of signal processing in the receiver and develop advanced spoofing detection and mitigation techniques.

The recent development of distribution-level phasor measurement units, a.k.a. micro-PMUs, has been an important step towards achieving situational awareness in power distribution networks. The challenge however is to transform the large amount of data that is generated by micro-PMUs to actionable information and then match the information to use cases with practical value to system operators. This open problem is addressed in this paper. First, we introduce a novel data-driven event detection technique to pick out valuable portion of data from extremely large raw micro-PMU data. Subsequently, a datadriven event classifier is developed to effectively classify power quality events. Importantly, we use field expert knowledge and utility records to conduct an extensive data-driven event labeling. Moreover, certain aspects from event detection analysis are adopted as additional features to be fed into the classifier model. In this regard, a multi-class support vector machine (multi-SVM) classifier is trained and tested over 15 days of real-world data from two micro-PMUs on a distribution feeder in Riverside, CA. In total, we analyze 1.2 billion measurement points, and 10,700 events. The effectiveness of the developed event classifier is compared with prevalent multi-class classification methods, including k-nearest neighbor method as well as decision-tree method. Importantly, two real-world use-cases are presented for the proposed data analytics tools, including remote asset monitoring and distribution-level oscillation analysis.

Smart grid consists of multiple different entities related to various energy management systems which share fine-grained energy measurements among themselves in an optimal and reliable manner. Such delivery is achieved through intelligent transmission and distribution networks composed of various stakeholders like Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), Master and Remote Terminal Units (MTU and RTU), Storage Centers and users in power utility departments subject to volatile changes in requirements. Hence, secure accessibility of data becomes vital in the context of efficient functioning of the smart grid. In this paper, we propose a practical attribute-based encryption scheme for securing data sharing and data access in Smart Grid architectures with the added advantage of obfuscating the access policy. This is aimed at preserving data privacy in the context of competing smart grid operators. We build our scheme on Linear Secret Sharing (LSS) Schemes for supporting any monotone access structures and thus enhancing the expressiveness of access policies. Lastly, we analyze the security, access policy privacy and collusion resistance properties of our cryptosystem and provide an efficiency comparison as well as experimental analysis using the Charm-Crypto framework to validate the proficiency of our proposed solution.

A significant challenge in modern computer security is the growing skill gap as intruder capabilities increase, making it necessary to begin automating elements of penetration testing so analysts can contend with the growing number of cyber threats. In this paper, we attempt to assist human analysts by automating a single host penetration attack. To do so, a smart agent performs different attack sequences to find vulnerabilities in a target system. As it does so, it accumulates knowledge, learns new attack sequences and improves its own internal penetration testing logic. As a result, this agent (AgentPen for simplicity) is able to successfully penetrate hosts it has never interacted with before. A computer security administrator using this tool would receive a comprehensive, automated sequence of actions leading to a security breach, highlighting potential vulnerabilities, and reducing the amount of menial tasks a typical penetration tester would need to execute. To achieve autonomy, we apply an unsupervised machine learning algorithm, Q-learning, with an approximator that incorporates a deep neural network architecture. The security audit itself is modelled as a Markov Decision Process in order to test a number of decision-making strategies and compare their convergence to optimality. A series of experimental results is presented to show how this approach can be effectively used to automate penetration testing using a scalable, i.e. not exhaustive, and adaptive approach.

Cloud computing dominates the information communication and technology landscape despite the presence of lingering security issues such as the interdependency problem. The latter is a co-residence conundrum where the attacker successfully compromises his target virtual machine by first exploiting the weakest (in terms of security) virtual machine that is hosted in the same server. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel virtual machine allocation policy that is based on the attacker's efficiency and coverage. By default, our allocation policy considers all legitimate users as attackers and then proceeds to host the users' virtual machines to the server where their efficiency and/or coverage are the smallest. Our simulation results show that our proposal performs better than the existing allocation policies that were proposed to tackle the same issue, by reducing the attacker's possibilities to zero and by using between 30 - 48% less hosts.

Siu, J. Y., Panda, S. Kumar.  2020.  A Specification-Based Detection for Attacks in the Multi-Area System. IECON 2020 The 46th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. :1526—1526.
In the past decade, cyber-attack events on the power grid have proven to be sophisticated and advanced. These attacks led to severe consequences on the grid operation, such as equipment damage or power outages. Hence, it is more critical than ever to develop tools for security assessment and detection of anomalies in the cyber-physical grid. For an extensive power grid, it is complex to analyze the causes of frequency deviations. Besides, if the system is compromised, attackers can leverage on the frequency deviation to bypass existing protection measures of the grid. This paper aims to develop a novel specification-based method to detect False Data Injection Attacks (FDIAs) in the multi-area system. Firstly, we describe the implementation of a three-area system model. Next, we assess the risk and devise several intrusion scenarios. Specifically, we inject false data into the frequency measurement and Automatic Generation Control (AGC) signals. We then develop a rule-based method to detect anomalies at the system-level. Our simulation results proves that the proposed algorithm can detect FDIAs in the system.

Engels, Susanne, Schellenberg, Falk, Paar, Christof.  2020.  SPFA: SFA on Multiple Persistent Faults. 2020 Workshop on Fault Detection and Tolerance in Cryptography (FDTC). :49–56.
For classical fault analysis, a transient fault is required to be injected during runtime, e.g., only at a specific round. Instead, Persistent Fault Analysis (PFA) introduces a powerful class of fault attacks that allows for a fault to be present throughout the whole execution. One limitation of original PFA as introduced by Zhang et al. at CHES'18 is that the adversary needs know (or brute-force) the faulty values prior to the analysis. While this was addressed at a follow-up work at CHES'20, the solution is only applicable to a single faulty value. Instead, we use the potency of Statistical Fault Analysis (SFA) in the persistent fault setting, presenting Statistical Persistent Fault Analysis (SPFA) as a more general approach of PFA. As a result, any or even a multitude of unknown faults that cause an exploitable bias in the targeted round can be used to recover the cipher's secret key. Indeed, the undesired faults in the other rounds that occur due the persistent nature of the attack converge to a uniform distribution as required by SFA. We verify the effectiveness of our attack against LED and AES.
