The outsourcing of databases is very popular among IT companies and industries. It acts as a solution for businesses to ensure availability of the data for their users. The solution of outsourcing the database is to encrypt the data in a form where the database service provider can perform relational operations over the encrypted database. At the same time, the associated security risk of data leakage prevents many potential industries from deploying it. In this paper, we present a secure outsourcing database search scheme (BASDB) with the use of a smart contract for search operation over index of encrypted database and storing encrypted relational database in the cloud. Our proposed scheme BASDB is a simple and practical solution for effective search on encrypted relations and is well resistant to information leakage against attacks like search and access pattern leakage.

Tiwari, Anurag, Srivastava, Vinay Kumar.  2022.  A Chaotic Encrypted Reliable Image Watermarking Scheme based on Integer Wavelet Transform-Schur Transform and Singular Value Decomposition. 2022 International Conference on Computing, Communication, and Intelligent Systems (ICCCIS). :581–586.
In the present era of the internet, image watermarking schemes are used to provide content authentication, security and reliability of various multimedia contents. In this paper image watermarking scheme which utilizes the properties of Integer Wavelet Transform (IWT), Schur decomposition and Singular value decomposition (SVD) based is proposed. In the suggested method, the cover image is subjected to a 3-level Integer wavelet transform (IWT), and the HH3 subband is subjected to Schur decomposition. In order to retrieve its singular values, the upper triangular matrix from the HH3 subband’s Schur decomposition is then subjected to SVD. The watermark image is first encrypted using a chaotic map, followed by the application of a 3-level IWT to the encrypted watermark and the usage of singular values of the LL-subband to embed by manipulating the singular values of the processed cover image. The proposed scheme is tested under various attacks like filtering (median, average, Gaussian) checkmark (histogram equalization, rotation, horizontal and vertical flipping) and noise (Gaussian, Salt & Pepper Noise). The suggested scheme provides strong robustness against numerous attacks and chaotic encryption provides security to watermark.

Cloud computing is becoming a demanding technology due to its flexibility, sensibility and remote accessibility. Apart from these applications of cloud computing, privacy and security are two terms that pose a circumstantial discussion. Various authors have argued on this topic that cloud computing is more secure than other data sharing and storing methods. The conventional data storing system is a computer system or smartphone storage. The argument debate also states that cloud computing is vulnerable to enormous types of attacks which make it a more concerning technology. This current study has also tried to draw the circumstantial and controversial debate on the security and privacy system of cloud computing. Primary research has been conducted with 65 cloud computing experts to understand whether a cloud computing security technique is highly secure or not. An online survey has been conducted with them where they provided their opinions based on the security and privacy system of cloud computing. Findings showed that no particular technology is available which can provide maximum security. Although the respondents agreed that blockchain is a more secure cloud computing technology; however, the blockchain also has certain threats which need to be addressed. The study has found essential encryption systems that can be integrated to strengthen security; however, continuous improvement is required.

Smart phones have become the preferred way for Chinese Internet users currently. The mobile phone traffic is large from the operating system. These traffic is mainly generated by the services. In the context of the universal encryption of the traffic, classification identification of mobile encryption services can effectively reduce the difficulty of analytical difficulty due to mobile terminals and operating system diversity, and can more accurately identify user access targets, and then enhance service quality and network security management. The existing mobile encryption service classification methods have two shortcomings in feature selection: First, the DL model is used as a black box, and the features of large dimensions are not distinguished as input of classification model, which resulting in sharp increase in calculation complexity, and the actual application is limited. Second, the existing feature selection method is insufficient to use the time and space associated information of traffic, resulting in less robustness and low accuracy of the classification. In this paper, we propose a feature enhancement method based on adjacent flow contextual features and evaluate the Apple encryption service traffic collected from the real world. Based on 5 DL classification models, the refined classification accuracy of Apple services is significantly improved. Our work can provide an effective solution for the fine management of mobile encryption services.

Kalyan, Tripathi, Vikas.  2022.  Cluster, Cloud, Grid Computing via Network Communication Using Control Communication and Monitoring of Smart Grid. 2022 2nd International Conference on Advance Computing and Innovative Technologies in Engineering (ICACITE). :1220—1224.
Traditional power consumption management systems are not showing enough reliability and thus, smart grid technology has been introduced to reduce the excess power wastages. In the context of smart grid systems, network communication is another term that is used for developing the network between the users and the load profiles. Cloud computing and clustering are also executed for efficient power management. Based on the facts, this research is going to identify wireless network communication systems to monitor and control smart grid power consumption. Primary survey-based research has been carried out with 62 individuals who worked in the smart grid system, tracked, monitored and controlled the power consumptions using WSN technology. The survey was conducted online where the respondents provided their opinions via a google survey form. The responses were collected and analyzed on Microsoft Excel. Results show that hybrid commuting of cloud and edge computing technology is more advantageous than individual computing. Respondents agreed that deep learning techniques will be more beneficial to analyze load profiles than machine learning techniques. Lastly, the study has explained the advantages and challenges of using smart grid network communication systems. Apart from the findings from primary research, secondary journal articles were also observed to emphasize the research findings.

This paper presents a program-code mutation technique that is applied in-field to embedded systems in order to create diversity in a population of systems that are identical at the time of their deployment. With this diversity, it becomes more difficult for attackers to carry out the very popular Return-Oriented-Programming (ROP) attack in a large scale, since the gadgets in different systems are located at different program addresses after code permutation. In order to prevent the system from a system crash after a failed ROP attack, we further propose the combination of the code mutation with a return address checking. We will report the overhead in time and memory along with a security analysis.

Joon, Ranjita, Tomar, Parul.  2022.  Cognitive Radio Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey. 2022 Fifth International Conference on Computational Intelligence and Communication Technologies (CCICT). :216–222.
There has been a significant rise in the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in the past few years. It is evident that WSNs operate in unlicensed spectrum bands [1]. But due to the increasing usage in unlicensed spectrum band this band is getting overcrowded. The recent development of cognitive radio technology [2, 3] has made possible the utilization of licensed spectrum band in an opportunistic manner. This paper studies an introduction to Cognitive Radio Technology, Cognitive Radio Wireless Sensor Networks, its Advantages & Challenges, Cognitive Radio Technology Applications and a comparative analysis of node clustering techniques in CWSN.

Control flow integrity (CFI) checks are used in desktop systems, in order to protect them from various forms of attacks, but they are rarely investigated for embedded systems, due to their introduced overhead. The contribution of this paper is an efficient software implementation of a CFI-check for ARM-and Xtensa processors. Moreover, we propose the combination of this CFI-check with another defense mechanism against return-oriented-programming (ROP). We show that by this combination the security is significantly improved. Moreover, it will also in-crease the safety of the system, since the combination can detect a failed ROP-attack and bring the system in a safe state, which is not possible when using each technique separately. We will also report on the introduced overhead in code size and run time.

Singh, Pushpa Bharti, Tomar, Parul, Kathuria, Madhumita.  2022.  Comparative Study of Machine Learning Techniques for Intrusion Detection Systems. 2022 International Conference on Machine Learning, Big Data, Cloud and Parallel Computing (COM-IT-CON). 1:274—283.
Being a part of today’s technical world, we are connected through a vast network. More we are addicted to these modernization techniques we need security. There must be reliability in a network security system so that it is capable of doing perfect monitoring of the whole network of an organization so that any unauthorized users or intruders wouldn’t be able to halt our security breaches. Firewalls are there for securing our internal network from unauthorized outsiders but still some time possibility of attacks is there as according to a survey 60% of attacks were internal to the network. So, the internal system needs the same higher level of security just like external. So, understanding the value of security measures with accuracy, efficiency, and speed we got to focus on implementing and comparing an improved intrusion detection system. A comprehensive literature review has been done and found that some feature selection techniques with standard scaling combined with Machine Learning Techniques can give better results over normal existing ML Techniques. In this survey paper with the help of the Uni-variate Feature selection method, the selection of 14 essential features out of 41 is performed which are used in comparative analysis. We implemented and compared both binary class classification and multi-class classification-based Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) for two Supervised Machine Learning Techniques Support Vector Machine and Classification and Regression Techniques.

The Internet of Things (IoT) aims to introduce pervasive computation into the human environment. The processing on a cloud platform is suggested due to the IoT devices' resource limitations. High latency while transmitting IoT data from its edge network to the cloud is the primary limitation. Modern IoT applications frequently use fog computing, an unique architecture, as a replacement for the cloud since it promises faster reaction times. In this work, a fog layer is introduced in smart vital sign monitor design in order to serve faster. Context aware computing makes use of environmental or situational data around the object to invoke proactive services upon its usable content. Here in this work the fog layer is intended to provide local data storage, data preprocessing, context awareness and timely analysis.

Cyber attacks keep states, companies and individuals at bay, draining precious resources including time, money, and reputation. Attackers thereby seem to have a first mover advantage leading to a dynamic defender attacker game. Automated approaches taking advantage of Cyber Threat Intelligence on past attacks bear the potential to empower security professionals and hence increase cyber security. Consistently, there has been a lot of research on automated approaches in cyber risk management including works on predictive attack algorithms and threat hunting. Combining data on countermeasures from “MITRE Detection, Denial, and Disruption Framework Empowering Network Defense” and adversarial data from “MITRE Adversarial Tactics, Techniques and Common Knowledge” this work aims at developing methods that enable highly precise and efficient automatic incident response. We introduce Attack Incident Responder, a methodology working with simple heuristics to find the most efficient sets of counter-measures for hypothesized attacks. By doing so, the work contributes to narrowing the attackers first mover advantage. Experimental results are promising high average precisions in predicting effiective defenses when using the methodology. In addition, we compare the proposed defense measures against a static set of defensive techniques offering robust security against observed attacks. Furthermore, we combine the approach of automated incidence response to an approach for threat hunting enabling full automation of security operation centers. By this means, we define a threshold in the precision of attack hypothesis generation that must be met for predictive defense algorithms to outperform the baseline. The calculated threshold can be used to evaluate attack hypothesis generation algorithms. The presented methodology for automated incident response may be a valuable support for information security professionals. Last, the work elaborates on the combination of static base defense with adaptive incidence response for generating a bio-inspired artificial immune system for computerized networks.

The development of new types of technology actualizes the issues of ensuring their information security. The aim of the work is to increase the security of the collective decision-making process in swarm robotic systems from negative impacts by identifying malicious robots. It is proposed to use confidence in choosing an alternative when reaching a consensus as a criterion for identifying malicious robots - a malicious robot, having a special behavior strategy, does not fully take into account the signs of the external environment and information from other robots, which means that such a robot will change its mind with characteristic features for each malicious strategy, and its degree of confidence will be different from the usual voting robot. The modeling performed and the obtained experimental data on three types of malicious behavioral strategies demonstrate the possibility of using the degree of confidence to identify malicious robots. The advantages of the approach are taking into account a large number of alternatives and universality, which lies in the fact that the method is based on the mechanisms of collective decision-making, which proceed in the same way on various hardware platforms of swarm robotic systems. The proposed method can serve as a basis for the development of more complex security mechanisms in swarm robotic systems.

Markelon, Sam A., True, John.  2022.  The DecCert PKI: A Solution to Decentralized Identity Attestation and Zooko’s Triangle. 2022 IEEE International Conference on Decentralized Applications and Infrastructures (DAPPS). :74–82.
We propose DecCert, a decentralized public key infrastructure designed as a smart contract that solves the problem of identity attestation on public blockchains. Our system allows an individual to bind an identity to a public blockchain address. Once a claim of identity is made by an individual, other users can choose to verify the attested identity based on the evidence presented by an identity claim maker by staking cryptocurrency in the DecCert smart contract. Increasing levels of trust are naturally built based upon the amount staked and the duration the collateral is staked for. This mechanism replaces the usual utilization of digital signatures in a traditional hierarchical certificate authority model or the web of trust model to form a publicly verifiable decentralized stake of trust model. We also present a novel solution to the certificate revocation problem and implement our solution on the Ethereum blockchain. Further, we show that our design solves Zooko’s triangle as defined for public key infrastructure deployments.

Various approaches of microgrid operation have been proposed, albeit with noticeable issues such as power-sharing, control of frequency and voltage excursions, applicability on different grids, etc. This paper proposes a goal function-based, decentralized control that addresses the mentioned problems and secures the microgrid stability by constraining the frequency and node deviations across the grid while simultaneously supporting the desired active power exchange between prosumer nodes. The control algorithm is independent of network topology and enables arbitrary node connection, i.e. seamless microgrid expandability. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, simulation results are presented and discussed.

Duby, Adam, Taylor, Teryl, Bloom, Gedare, Zhuang, Yanyan.  2022.  Detecting and Classifying Self-Deleting Windows Malware Using Prefetch Files. 2022 IEEE 12th Annual Computing and Communication Workshop and Conference (CCWC). :0745–0751.
Malware detection and analysis can be a burdensome task for incident responders. As such, research has turned to machine learning to automate malware detection and malware family classification. Existing work extracts and engineers static and dynamic features from the malware sample to train classifiers. Despite promising results, such techniques assume that the analyst has access to the malware executable file. Self-deleting malware invalidates this assumption and requires analysts to find forensic evidence of malware execution for further analysis. In this paper, we present and evaluate an approach to detecting malware that executed on a Windows target and further classify the malware into its associated family to provide semantic insight. Specifically, we engineer features from the Windows prefetch file, a file system forensic artifact that archives process information. Results show that it is possible to detect the malicious artifact with 99% accuracy; furthermore, classifying the malware into a fine-grained family has comparable performance to techniques that require access to the original executable. We also provide a thorough security discussion of the proposed approach against adversarial diversity.

Wang, Rui, Zheng, Jun, Shi, Zhiwei, Tan, Yu'an.  2022.  Detecting Malware Using Graph Embedding and DNN. 2022 International Conference on Blockchain Technology and Information Security (ICBCTIS). :28—31.
Nowadays, the popularity of intelligent terminals makes malwares more and more serious. Among the many features of application, the call graph can accurately express the behavior of the application. The rapid development of graph neural network in recent years provides a new solution for the malicious analysis of application using call graphs as features. However, there are still problems such as low accuracy. This paper established a large-scale data set containing more than 40,000 samples and selected the class call graph, which was extracted from the application, as the feature and used the graph embedding combined with the deep neural network to detect the malware. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the detection model proposed in this paper is 97.7%; the precision is 96.6%; the recall is 96.8%; the F1-score is 96.4%, which is better than the existing detection model based on Markov chain and graph embedding detection model.

Nguyen, Thanh Tuan, Nguyen, Thanh Phuong, Tran, Thanh-Hai.  2022.  Detecting Reflectional Symmetry of Binary Shapes Based on Generalized R-Transform. 2022 International Conference on Multimedia Analysis and Pattern Recognition (MAPR). :1—6.
Analyzing reflectionally symmetric features inside an image is one of the important processes for recognizing the peculiar appearance of natural and man-made objects, biological patterns, etc. In this work, we will point out an efficient detector of reflectionally symmetric shapes by addressing a class of projection-based signatures that are structured by a generalized \textbackslashmathcalR\_fm-transform model. To this end, we will firstly prove the \textbackslashmathcalR\_fmˆ-transform in accordance with reflectional symmetry detection. Then different corresponding \textbackslashmathcalR\_fm-signatures of binary shapes are evaluated in order to determine which the corresponding exponentiation of the \textbackslashmathcalR\_fm-transform is the best for the detection. Experimental results of detecting on single/compound contour-based shapes have validated that the exponentiation of 10 is the most discriminatory, with over 2.7% better performance on the multiple-axis shapes in comparison with the conventional one. Additionally, the proposed detector also outperforms most of other existing methods. This finding should be recommended for applications in practice.

Malware attacks in the cyber world continue to increase despite the efforts of Malware analysts to combat this problem. Recently, Malware samples have been presented as binary sequences and assembly codes. However, most researchers focus only on the raw Malware sequence in their proposed solutions, ignoring that the assembly codes may contain important details that enable rapid Malware detection. In this work, we leveraged the capabilities of deep autoencoders to investigate the presence of feature disparities in the assembly and raw binary Malware samples. First, we treated the task as outliers to investigate whether the autoencoder would identify and justify features as samples from the same family. Second, we added noise to all samples and used Deep Autoencoder to reconstruct the original samples by denoising. Experiments with the Microsoft Malware dataset showed that the byte samples' features differed from the assembly code samples.

Military networks consist of heterogeneous devices that provide soldiers with real-time terrain and mission intel-ligence. The development of next-generation Software Defined Networks (SDN)-enabled devices is enabling the modernization of traditional military networks. Commonly, traditional military networks take the trustworthiness of devices for granted. How-ever, the recent modernization of military networks introduces cyber attacks such as data and identity spoofing attacks. Hence, it is crucial to ensure the trustworthiness of network traffic to ensure the mission's outcome. This work proposes a Continuous Behavior-based Authentication (CBA) protocol that integrates network traffic analysis techniques to provide robust and efficient network management flow by separating data and control planes in SDN-enabled military networks. The evaluation of the CBA protocol aimed to measure the efficiency of the proposed protocol in realistic military networks. Furthermore, we analyze the overall network overhead of the CBA protocol and its accuracy to detect rogue network traffic data from field devices.

Rossi, Alessandra, Andriella, Antonio, Rossi, Silvia, Torras, Carme, Alenyà, Guillem.  2022.  Evaluating the Effect of Theory of Mind on People’s Trust in a Faulty Robot. 2022 31st IEEE International Conference on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN). :477–482.
The success of human-robot interaction is strongly affected by the people’s ability to infer others’ intentions and behaviours, and the level of people’s trust that others will abide by their same principles and social conventions to achieve a common goal. The ability of understanding and reasoning about other agents’ mental states is known as Theory of Mind (ToM). ToM and trust, therefore, are key factors in the positive outcome of human-robot interaction. We believe that a robot endowed with a ToM is able to gain people’s trust, even when this may occasionally make errors. In this work, we present a user study in the field in which participants (N=123) interacted with a robot that may or may not have a ToM, and may or may not exhibit erroneous behaviour. Our findings indicate that a robot with ToM is perceived as more reliable, and they trusted it more than a robot without a ToM even when the robot made errors. Finally, ToM results to be a key driver for tuning people’s trust in the robot even when the initial condition of the interaction changed (i.e., loss and regain of trust in a longer relationship).
