De Oliveira Nunes, Ivan, Jakkamsetti, Sashidhar, Tsudik, Gene.  2021.  Tiny-CFA: Minimalistic Control-Flow Attestation Using Verified Proofs of Execution. 2021 Design, Automation Test in Europe Conference Exhibition (DATE). :641–646.
The design of tiny trust anchors attracted much attention over the past decade, to secure low-end MCU-s that cannot afford more expensive security mechanisms. In particular, hardware/software (hybrid) co-designs offer low hardware cost, while retaining similar security guarantees as (more expensive) hardware-based techniques. Hybrid trust anchors support security services (such as remote attestation, proofs of software update/erasure/reset, and proofs of remote software execution) in resource-constrained MCU-s, e.g., MSP430 and AVR AtMega32. Despite these advances, detection of control-flow attacks in low-end MCU-s remains a challenge, since hardware requirements for the cheapest mitigation techniques are often more expensive than the MCU-s themselves. In this work, we tackle this challenge by designing Tiny-CFA - a Control-Flow Attestation (CFA) technique with a single hardware requirement - the ability to generate proofs of remote software execution (PoX). In turn, PoX can be implemented very efficiently and securely in low-end MCU-s. Consequently, our design achieves the lowest hardware overhead of any CFA technique, while relying on a formally verified PoX as its sole hardware requirement. With respect to runtime overhead, Tiny-CFA also achieves better performance than prior CFA techniques based on code instrumentation. We implement and evaluate Tiny-CFA, analyze its security, and demonstrate its practicality using real-world publicly available applications.

Diamant, Roee, Casari, Paolo, Tomasin, Stefano.  2021.  Topology-based Secret Key Generation for Underwater Acoustic Networks. 2021 Fifth Underwater Communications and Networking Conference (UComms). :1—5.
We propose a method to let a source and a destination agree on a key that remains secret to a potential eavesdropper in an underwater acoustic network (UWAN). We generate the key from the propagation delay measured over a set of multihop routes: this harvests the randomness in the UWAN topology and turns the slow sound propagation in the water into an advantage for the key agreement protocol. Our scheme relies on a route discovery handshake. During this process, all intermediate relays accumulate message processing delays, so that both the source and the destination can compute the actual propagation delays along each route, and map this information to a string of bits. Finally, via a secret key agreement from the information-theoretic security framework, we obtain an equal set of bits at the source and destination, which is provably secret to a potential eavesdropper located away from both nodes. Our simulation results show that, even for small UWANs of 4 nodes, we obtain 11 secret bits per explored topology, and that the protocol is insensitive to an average node speed of up to 0.5 m/s.

Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) are critical components of the Internet infrastructure that affect its performance, evolution, security and economy. In this work, we introduce a technique to improve the well-known TraIXroute tool with its ability to identify IXPs. TraIXroute is a tool written in python3. It always encounters problems during its installation by network administrators and researchers. This problem remains unchanged in the field of internet ixp measurement tools. Our paper aims to make a critical analysis of TraIXroute tool which has some malfunctions. Furthermore, our main objective is to implement an improved tool for detecting ixps on the traceroute path with ipv4 and ipv6. The tool will have options for Geolocation of ixps as well as ASs. Our tool is written in C\# (C sharp) and python which are object oriented programming languages.

Smart products, such as toy robots, must comply with multiple legal requirements of the countries they are sold and used in. Currently, compliance with the legal environment requires manually customizing products for different markets. In this paper, we explore a design approach for smart products that enforces compliance with aspects of the European Union’s data protection principles within a product’s firmware through a toy robot case study. To this end, we present an exchange between computer scientists and legal scholars that identified the relevant data flows, their processing needs, and the implementation decisions that could allow a device to operate while complying with the EU data protection law. By designing a data-minimizing toy robot, we show that the variety, amount, and quality of data that is exposed, processed, and stored outside a user’s premises can be considerably reduced while preserving the device’s functionality. In comparison with a robot designed using a traditional approach, in which 90% of the collected types of information are stored by the data controller or a remote service, our proposed design leads to the mandatory exposure of only 7 out of 15 collected types of information, all of which are legally required by the data controller to demonstrate consent. Moreover, our design is aligned with the Data Privacy Vocabulary, which enables the toy robot to cross geographic borders and seamlessly adjust its data processing activities to the local regulations.

In this paper we propose to combine the safe C dialect Checked C with concolic testing to obtain an effective methodology for attaining safer C code. Checked C is a modern and backward compatible extension to the C programming language which provides facilities for writing memory-safe C code. We utilize incremental conversions of unsafe C software to Checked C. After each increment, we leverage concolic testing, an effective test generation technique, to support the conversion process by searching for newly introduced and existing bugs. Our RISC-V experiments using the RIOT Operating System (OS) demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. We uncovered 4 previously unknown bugs and 3 bugs accidentally introduced through our conversion process.

SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONSA Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) micro data center (MEDC) consists of multiple MEC hosts close to endpoint devices. MEC service is delivered by instantiating a virtualization system (e.g., Virtual Machines or Containers) on a MEC host. MEDC faces more new security risks due to various device connections in an open environment. When more and more IoT/CPS systems are connected to MEDC, it is necessary for MEC service providers to quantitatively analyze any security loss and then make defense-related decision. This paper develops a CTMC model for quantitatively analyzing the security and dependability of a vulnerable MEDC system under lateral movement attacks, from the adversary’s initial successful access until the MEDC becomes resistant to the attack. The proposed model captures the behavior of the system in a scenario where (i) the rate of vulnerable MEC servers being infected increases with the increasing number of infected MEC servers, (ii) each infected MEC server can perform its compromising activity independently and randomly, and (iii) any infected MEC may fail and then cannot provide service. We also introduce the formulas for computing metrics. The proposed model and formula are verified to be approximately accurate by comparing numerical results and simulation results.

Chang, Mai Lee, Trafton, Greg, McCurry, J. Malcolm, Lockerd Thomaz, Andrea.  2021.  Unfair! Perceptions of Fairness in Human-Robot Teams. 2021 30th IEEE International Conference on Robot Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN). :905–912.
How team members are treated influences their performance in the team and their desire to be a part of the team in the future. Prior research in human-robot teamwork proposes fairness definitions for human-robot teaming that are based on the work completed by each team member. However, metrics that properly capture people’s perception of fairness in human-robot teaming remains a research gap. We present work on assessing how well objective metrics capture people’s perception of fairness. First, we extend prior fairness metrics based on team members’ capabilities and workload to a bigger team. We also develop a new metric to quantify the amount of time that the robot spends working on the same task as each person. We conduct an online user study (n=95) and show that these metrics align with perceived fairness. Importantly, we discover that there are bleed-over effects in people’s assessment of fairness. When asked to rate fairness based on the amount of time that the robot spends working with each person, participants used two factors (fairness based on the robot’s time and teammates’ capabilities). This bleed-over effect is stronger when people are asked to assess fairness based on capability. From these insights, we propose design guidelines for algorithms to enable robotic teammates to consider fairness in its decision-making to maintain positive team social dynamics and team task performance.

Husa, Eric, Tourani, Reza.  2021.  Vibe: An Implicit Two-Factor Authentication using Vibration Signals. 2021 IEEE Conference on Communications and Network Security (CNS). :236—244.
The increased need for online account security and the prominence of smartphones in today’s society has led to smartphone-based two-factor authentication schemes, in which the second factor is a code received on the user’s smartphone. Evolving two-factor authentication mechanisms suggest using the proximity of the user’s devices as the second authentication factor, avoiding the inconvenience of user-device interaction. These mechanisms often use low-range communication technologies or the similarities of devices’ environments to prove devices’ proximity and user authenticity. However, such mechanisms are vulnerable to colocated adversaries. This paper proposes Vibe-an implicit two-factor authentication mechanism, which uses a vibration communication channel to prove users’ authenticity in a secure and non-intrusive manner. Vibe’s design provides security at the physical layer, reducing the attack surface to the physical surface shared between devices. As a result, it protects users’ security even in the presence of co-located adversaries-the primary drawback of the existing systems. We prototyped Vibe and assessed its performance using commodity hardware in different environments. Our results show an equal error rate of 0.0175 with an end-to-end authentication latency of approximately 3.86 seconds.

Tomasin, Stefano, Hidalgo, Javier German Luzon.  2021.  Virtual Private Mobile Network with Multiple Gateways for B5G Location Privacy. 2021 IEEE 94th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2021-Fall). :1–6.
In a beyond-5G (B5G) scenario, we consider a virtual private mobile network (VPMN), i.e., a set of user equipments (UEs) directly communicating in a device-to-device (D2D) fashion, and connected to the cellular network by multiple gateways. The purpose of the VPMN is to hide the position of the VPMN UEs to the mobile network operator (MNO). We investigate the design and performance of packet routing inside the VPMN. First, we note that the routing that maximizes the rate between the VPMN and the cellular network leads to an unbalanced use of the gateways by each UE. In turn, this reveals information on the location of the VPMN UEs. Therefore, we derive a routing algorithm that maximizes the VPMN rate, while imposing for each UE the same data rate at each gateway, thus hiding the location of the UE. We compare the performance of the resulting solution, assessing the location privacy achieved by the VPMN, and considering both the case of single hop and multihop in the transmissions from the UEs to the gateways.

Torquato, Matheus, Vieira, Marco.  2021.  VM Migration Scheduling as Moving Target Defense against Memory DoS Attacks: An Empirical Study. 2021 IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications (ISCC). :1—6.
Memory Denial of Service (DoS) attacks are easy-to-launch, hard to detect, and significantly impact their targets. In memory DoS, the attacker targets the memory of his Virtual Machine (VM) and, due to hardware isolation issues, the attack affects the co-resident VMs. Theoretically, we can deploy VM migration as Moving Target Defense (MTD) against memory DoS. However, the current literature lacks empirical evidence supporting this hypothesis. Moreover, there is a need to evaluate how the VM migration timing impacts the potential MTD protection. This practical experience report presents an experiment on VM migration-based MTD against memory DoS. We evaluate the impact of memory DoS attacks in the context of two applications running in co-hosted VMs: machine learning and OLTP. The results highlight that the memory DoS attacks lead to more than 70% reduction in the applications' performance. Nevertheless, timely VM migrations can significantly mitigate the attack effects in both considered applications.

Li, Hongrui, Zhou, Lili, Xing, Mingming, Taha, Hafsah binti.  2021.  Vulnerability Detection Algorithm of Lightweight Linux Internet of Things Application with Symbolic Execution Method. 2021 International Symposium on Computer Technology and Information Science (ISCTIS). :24–27.
The security of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has become a matter of great concern in recent years. The existence of security holes in the executable programs in the IoT devices has resulted in difficult to estimate security risks. For a long time, vulnerability detection is mainly completed by manual debugging and analysis, and the detection efficiency is low and the accuracy is difficult to guarantee. In this paper, the mainstream automated vulnerability analysis methods in recent years are studied, and a vulnerability detection algorithm based on symbol execution is presented. The detection algorithm is suitable for lightweight applications in small and medium-sized IoT devices. It realizes three functions: buffer overflow vulnerability detection, encryption reliability detection and protection state detection. The robustness of the detection algorithm was tested in the experiment, and the detection of overflow vulnerability program was completed within 2.75 seconds, and the detection of encryption reliability was completed within 1.79 seconds. Repeating the test with multiple sets of data showed a small difference of less than 6.4 milliseconds. The results show that the symbol execution detection algorithm presented in this paper has high detection efficiency and more robust accuracy and robustness.

Wang, Yahui, Cui, Qiushi, Tang, Xinlu, Li, Dongdong, Chen, Tao.  2021.  Waveform Vector Embedding for Incipient Fault Detection in Distribution Systems. 2021 IEEE Sustainable Power and Energy Conference (iSPEC). :3873–3879.
Incipient faults are faults at their initial stages and occur before permanent faults occur. It is very important to detect incipient faults timely and accurately for the safe and stable operation of the power system. At present, most of the detection methods for incipient faults are designed for the detection of a single device’s incipient fault, but a unified detection for multiple devices cannot be achieved. In order to increase the fault detection capability and enable detection expandability, this paper proposes a waveform vector embedding (WVE) method to embed incipient fault waveforms of different devices into waveform vectors. Then, we utilize the waveform vectors and formulate them into a waveform dictionary. To improve the efficiency of embedding the waveform signature into the learning process, we build a loss function that prevents overflow and overfitting of softmax function during when learning power system waveforms. We use the real data collected from an IEEE Power & Energy Society technical report to verify the feasibility of this method. For the result verification, we compare the superiority of this method with Logistic Regression and Support Vector Machine in different scenarios.

Goerke, Niklas, Timmermann, David, Baumgart, Ingmar.  2021.  Who Controls Your Robot? An Evaluation of ROS Security Mechanisms 2021 7th International Conference on Automation, Robotics and Applications (ICARA). :60—66.
The Robot Operation System (ROS) is widely used in academia as well as the industry to build custom robot applications. Successful cyberattacks on robots can result in a loss of control for the legitimate operator and thus have a severe impact on safety if the robot is moving uncontrollably. A high level of security thus needs to be mandatory. Neither ROS 1 nor 2 in their default configuration provide protection against network based attackers. Multiple protection mechanisms have been proposed that can be used to overcome this. Unfortunately, it is unclear how effective and usable each of them are. We provide a structured analysis of the requirements these protection mechanisms need to fulfill by identifying realistic, network based attacker models and using those to derive relevant security requirements and other evaluation criteria. Based on these criteria, we analyze the protection mechanisms available and compare them to each other. We find that none of the existing protection mechanisms fulfill all of the security requirements. For both ROS 1 and 2, we discuss which protection mechanism are most relevant and give hints on how to decide on one. We hope that the requirements we identify simplify the development or enhancement of protection mechanisms that cover all aspects of ROS and that our comparison helps robot operators to choose an adequate protection mechanism for their use case.

Website phishing continues to persist as one of the most important security threats of the modern Internet era. A major concern has been that machine learning based approaches, which have been the cornerstones of deployed phishing detection solutions, have not been able to adapt to the evolving nature of the phishing attacks. To create updated machine learning models, the collection of a sufficient corpus of real-time phishing data has always been a challenging problem as most phishing websites are short-lived. In this work, for the first time, we address these important concerns and describe an adaptive phishing detection solution that is able to adapt to changes in phishing attacks. Our solution has two major contributions. First, our solution allows for multiple organizations to collaborate in a privacy preserving manner and generate a robust machine learning model for phishing detection. Second, our solution is designed to be flexible in order to adapt to the novel phishing features introduced by attackers. Our solution not only allows for incorporating novel features into the existing machine learning model, but also can help, to a certain extent, the “unlearning” of existing features that have become obsolete in current phishing attacks. We evaluated our approach on a large real-world data collected over a period of six months. Our results achieve a high true positive rate of 97 %, which is on par with existing state-of-the art centralized solutions. Importantly, our results demonstrate that, a machine learning model can incorporate new features while selectively “unlearning” the older obsolete features.

Yin, Yi, Tateiwa, Yuichiro, Zhang, Guoqiang, Wang, Yun.  2021.  Consistency Decision Between IPv6 Firewall Policy and Security Policy. 2021 4th International Conference on Information Communication and Signal Processing (ICICSP). :577–581.

Firewall is the first defense line for network security. Packet filtering is a basic function in firewall, which filter network packets according to a series of rules called firewall policy. The design of firewall policy is invariably under the instruction of security policy, which is a generic guideline that lists the needs for network access permissions. The design of firewall policy should observe the regulations of security policy. However, even for IPv4 firewall policy, it is extremely difficult to keep the consistency between security policy and firewall policy. Some consistency decision methods of security policy and IPv4 firewall policy were proposed. However, the address space of IPv6 address is a very large, the existing consistency decision methods can not be directly used to deal with IPv6 firewall policy. To resolve the above problem, in this paper, we use a formal technique to decide the consistency between IPv6 firewall policy and security policy effectively and rapidly. We also developed a prototype model and evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Nimer, Lina, Tahat, Ashraf.  2021.  Implementation of a Peer-to-Peer Network Using Blockchain to Manage and Secure Electronic Medical Records. 2021 IEEE Jordan International Joint Conference on Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (JEEIT). :187—192.
An electronic medical record (EMR) is the digital medical data of a patient, and they are healthcare system's most valuable asset. In this paper, we introduce a decentralized network using blockchain technology and smart contracts as a solution to manage and secure medical records storing, and transactions between medical healthcare providers. Ethereum blockchain is employed to build the blockchain. Solidity object-oriented language was utilized to implement smart contracts to digitally facilitate and verify transactions across the network (creating records, access requests, permitting access, revoking access, rejecting access). This will mitigate prevailing issues of current systems and enhance their performance, since current EMRs are stored on a centralized database, which cannot guarantee data integrity and security, consequently making them susceptible to malicious attacks. Our proposed system approach is of vital importance considering that healthcare providers depend on various tests in making a decision about a patient's diagnosis, and the respective plan of treatment they will go through. These tests are not shared with other providers, while data is scattered on various systems, as a consequence of these ensuing scenarios, patients suffer of the resulting care provided. Moreover, blockchain can meliorate the motley serious challenges caused by future use of IoT devices that provide real-time data from patients. Therefore, integrating the two technologies will produce decentralized IoT based healthcare systems.

Thirumavalavasethurayar, P, Ravi, T.  2021.  Implementation of Replay Attack in Controller Area Network Bus Using Universal Verification Methodology. 2021 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Smart Systems (ICAIS). :1142–1146.

Controller area network is the serial communication protocol, which broadcasts the message on the CAN bus. The transmitted message is read by all the nodes which shares the CAN bus. The message can be eavesdropped and can be re-used by some other node by changing the information or send it by duplicate times. The message reused after some delay is replay attack. In this paper, the CAN network with three CAN nodes is implemented using the universal verification components and the replay attack is demonstrated by creating the faulty node. Two types of replay attack are implemented in this paper, one is to replay the entire message and the other one is to replay only the part of the frame. The faulty node uses the first replay attack method where it behaves like the other node in the network by duplicating the identifier. CAN frame except the identifier is reused in the second method which is hard to detect the attack as the faulty node uses its own identifier and duplicates only the data in the CAN frame.

With the rapid development of IoT in recent years, IoT is increasingly being used as an endpoint of supply chains. In general, as the majority of data is now being stored and shared over the network, information security is an important issue in terms of secure supply chain management. In response to cyber security breaches and threats, there has been much research and development on the secure storage and transfer of data over the network. However, there is a relatively limited amount of research and proposals for the security of endpoints, such as IoT linked in the supply chain network. In addition, it is difficult to ensure reliability for IoT itself due to a lack of resources such as CPU power and storage. Ensuring the reliability of IoT is essential when IoT is integrated into the supply chain. Thus, in order to secure the supply chain, we need to improve the reliability of IoT, the endpoint of the supply chain. In this work, we examine the use of IoT gateways, client certificates, and IdP as methods to compensate for the lack of IoT resources. The results of our qualitative evaluation demonstrate that using the IdP method is the most effective.

Thammarat, Chalee, Techapanupreeda, Chian.  2021.  A Secure Mobile Payment Protocol for Handling Accountability with Formal Verification. 2021 International Conference on Information Networking (ICOIN). :249–254.
Mobile payment protocols have attracted widespread attention over the past decade, due to advancements in digital technology. The use of these protocols in online industries can dramatically improve the quality of online services. However, the central issue of concern when utilizing these types of systems is their accountability, which ensures trust between the parties involved in payment transactions. It is, therefore, vital for researchers to investigate how to handle the accountability of mobile payment protocols. In this research, we introduce a secure mobile payment protocol to overcome this problem. Our payment protocol combines all the necessary security features, such as confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and authorization that are required to build trust among parties. In other words, is the properties of mutual authentication and non-repudiation are ensured, thus providing accountability. Our approach can resolve any conflicts that may arise in payment transactions between parties. To prove that the proposed protocol is correct and complete, we use the Scyther and AVISPA tools to verify our approach formally.

In this research a secured framework is developed to support effective digital service delivery for government to stakeholders. It is developed to provide secured network to the remote area of Bangladesh. The proposed framework has been tested through the rough simulation of the network infrastructure. Each and every part of the digital service network has been analyzed in the basis of security purpose. Through the simulation the security issues are identified and proposed a security policy framework for effective service. Basing on the findings the issues are included and the framework has designed as the solution of security issues. A complete security policy framework has prepared on the basis of the network topology. As the output the stakeholders will get a better and effective data service. This model is better than the other expected network infrastructure. Till now in Bangladesh none of the network infrastructure are security policy based. This is needed to provide the secured network to remote area from government.

Verification code recognition system based on convolutional neural network. In order to strengthen the network security defense work, this paper proposes a novel verification code recognition system based on convolutional neural network. The system combines Internet technology and big data technology, combined with advanced captcha technology, can prevent hackers from brute force cracking behavior to a certain extent. In addition, the system combines convolutional neural network, which makes the verification code combine numbers and letters, which improves the complexity of the verification code and the security of the user account. Based on this, the system uses threshold segmentation method and projection positioning method to construct an 8-layer convolutional neural network model, which enhances the security of the verification code input link. The research results show that the system can enhance the complexity of captcha, improve the recognition rate of captcha, and improve the security of user accounting.
