Emotion Detection through Facial feature recognition is an active domain of research in the field of human-computer interaction (HCI). Humans are able to share multiple emotions and feelings through their facial gestures and body language. In this project, in order to detect the live emotions from the human facial gesture, we will be using an algorithm that allows the computer to automatically detect the facial recognition of human emotions with the help of Convolution Neural Network (CNN) and OpenCV. Ultimately, Emotion Detection is an integration of obtained information from multiple patterns. If computers will be able to understand more of human emotions, then it will mutually reduce the gap between humans and computers. In this research paper, we will demonstrate an effective way to detect emotions like neutral, happy, sad, surprise, angry, fear, and disgust from the frontal facial expression of the human in front of the live webcam.

Zuo, Xiaojiang, Wang, Xiao, Han, Rui.  2022.  An Empirical Analysis of CAPTCHA Image Design Choices in Cloud Services. IEEE INFOCOM 2022 - IEEE Conference on Computer Communications Workshops (INFOCOM WKSHPS). :1–6.
Cloud service uses CAPTCHA to protect itself from malicious programs. With the explosive development of AI technology and the emergency of third-party recognition services, the factors that influence CAPTCHA’s security are going to be more complex. In such a situation, evaluating the security of mainstream CAPTCHAs in cloud services is helpful to guide better CAPTCHA design choices for providers. In this paper, we evaluate and analyze the security of 6 mainstream CAPTCHA image designs in public cloud services. According to the evaluation results, we made some suggestions of CAPTCHA image design choices to cloud service providers. In addition, we particularly discussed the CAPTCHA images adopted by Facebook and Twitter. The evaluations are separated into two stages: (i) using AI techniques alone; (ii) using both AI techniques and third-party services. The former is based on open source models; the latter is conducted under our proposed framework: CAPTCHAMix.

Random numbers are essential for communications security, as they are widely employed as secret keys and other critical parameters of cryptographic algorithms. The Linux random number generator (LRNG) is the most popular open-source software-based random number generator (RNG). The security of LRNG is influenced by the overall design, especially the quality of entropy sources. Therefore, it is necessary to assess and quantify the quality of the entropy sources which contribute the main randomness to RNGs. In this paper, we perform an empirical study on the quality of entropy sources in LRNG with Linux kernel 5.6, and provide the following two findings. We first analyze two important entropy sources: jiffies and cycles, and propose a method to predict jiffies by cycles with high accuracy. The results indicate that, the jiffies can be correctly predicted thus contain almost no entropy in the condition of knowing cycles. The other important finding is the failure of interrupt cycles during system boot. The lower bits of cycles caused by interrupts contain little entropy, which is contrary to our traditional cognition that lower bits have more entropy. We believe these findings are of great significance to improve the efficiency and security of the RNG design on software platforms.

Building occupancy data helps increase energy management systems’ performance, enabling lower energy use while preserving occupant comfort. The focus of this study is employing environmental data (e.g., including but not limited to temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2), etc.) to infer occupancy information. This will be achieved by exploring the application of information theory metrics with machine learning (ML) approaches to classify occupancy levels for a given dataset. Three datasets and six distinct ML algorithms were used in a comparative study to determine the best strategy for identifying occupancy patterns. It was determined that both k-nearest neighbors (kNN) and random forest (RF) identify occupancy labels with the highest overall level of accuracy, reaching 97.99% and 98.56%, respectively.

Rivera, Abel O. Gomez, White, Evan M., Acosta, Jaime C., Tosh, Deepak.  2022.  Enabling Device Trustworthiness for SDN-Enabled Internet -of- Battlefield Things. 2022 IEEE Conference on Dependable and Secure Computing (DSC). :1—7.
Military networks consist of heterogeneous devices that provide soldiers with real-time terrain and mission intel-ligence. The development of next-generation Software Defined Networks (SDN)-enabled devices is enabling the modernization of traditional military networks. Commonly, traditional military networks take the trustworthiness of devices for granted. How-ever, the recent modernization of military networks introduces cyber attacks such as data and identity spoofing attacks. Hence, it is crucial to ensure the trustworthiness of network traffic to ensure the mission's outcome. This work proposes a Continuous Behavior-based Authentication (CBA) protocol that integrates network traffic analysis techniques to provide robust and efficient network management flow by separating data and control planes in SDN-enabled military networks. The evaluation of the CBA protocol aimed to measure the efficiency of the proposed protocol in realistic military networks. Furthermore, we analyze the overall network overhead of the CBA protocol and its accuracy to detect rogue network traffic data from field devices.

Szatkowski, Justin Michael, Li, Yan, Du, Liang.  2022.  Enabling Reconfigurable Naval SCADA Network through Software-Defined Networking. 2022 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference & Expo (ITEC). :214–218.
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technique is presented in this paper to manage the Naval Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) network for equipping the network with the function of reconfiguration and scalability. The programmable nature of SDN enables a programmable Modular Topology Generator (MTG), which provides an extensive control over the network’s internal connectivity and traffic control. Specifically, two functions of MTG are developed and examined in this paper, namely linkHosts and linkSwitches. These functions are able to place the network into three different states, i.e., fully connected, fully disconnected, and partially connected. Therefore, it provides extensive security benefits and allows network administrators to dynamically reconfigure the network and adjust settings according to the network’s needs. Extensive tests on Mininet have demonstrated the effectiveness of SDN for enabling the reconfigurable and scalable Naval SCADA network. Therefore, it provides a potent tool to enhance the resiliency/survivability, scalability/compatibility, and security of naval SCADA networks.

In this article, we propose a generic cyber-physical framework, developed in our laboratory, for smart grid control and monitoring in real-time. Our framework is composed of four key elements: (1) system layer which embeds a physical or emulated power system network, (2) data analysis layer to execute real-time data-driven grid analysis algorithms, (3) backend layer with a generic data storage framework which supports multiple databases with functionally different architectures, and (4) visualization layer where multiple customized or commercially available user interfaces can be deployed concurrently for grid control and monitoring. These four layers are interlinked via bidirectional communication channels. Such a flexible and scalable framework provides a cohesive environment to enhance smart grid situational awareness. We demonstrate the utility of our proposed architecture with several case studies where we estimate a modified IEEE-33 bus distribution network topology entirely from synchrophasor measurements, without any prior knowledge of the grid network, and render the same on visualization platform. Three demonstrations are included with single and multiple system operators having complete and partial measurements.

The technology advance and convergence of cyber physical systems, smart sensors, short-range wireless communications, cloud computing, and smartphone apps have driven the proliferation of Internet of things (IoT) devices in smart homes and smart industry. In light of the high heterogeneity of IoT system, the prevalence of system vulnerabilities in IoT devices and applications, and the broad attack surface across the entire IoT protocol stack, a fundamental and urgent research problem of IoT security is how to effectively collect, analyze, extract, model, and visualize the massive network traffic of IoT devices for understanding what is happening to IoT devices. Towards this end, this paper develops and demonstrates an end-to-end system with three key components, i.e., the IoT network traffic monitoring system via programmable home routers, the backend IoT traffic behavior analysis system in the cloud, and the frontend IoT visualization system via smartphone apps, for monitoring, analyzing and virtualizing network traffic behavior of heterogeneous IoT devices in smart homes. The main contributions of this demonstration paper is to present a novel system with an end-to-end process of collecting, analyzing and visualizing IoT network traffic in smart homes.

This paper presents an energy consumption model of the sensor nodes in TDMA wireless mesh sensor network using merged data collecting (MDC) methods. Defining the energy consumption of the nodes in wireless mesh networks is crucial for battery lifetime estimation. In this paper, we describe the semiempirical model of the energy consumption of MDC method in the TDMA mesh sensor networks using flooding routing. In the model the low-level constraints are based on the measured energy consumption of the sensor nodes in the different operation phases.
Nihtilä, Timo, Berg, Heikki.  2022.  Energy Consumption of DECT-2020 NR Mesh Networks. 2022 Joint European Conference on Networks and Communications & 6G Summit (EuCNC/6G Summit). :196—201.
ETSI DECT-2020 New Radio (NR) is a new flexible radio interface targeted to support a broad range of wireless Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Recent reports have shown that DECT-2020 NR achieves good delay performance and it has been shown to fulfill both massive machine-type communications (mMTC) and ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) requirements for 5th generation (5G) networks. A unique aspect of DECT-2020 as a 5G technology is that it is an autonomous wireless mesh network (WMN) protocol where the devices construct and uphold the network independently without the need for base stations or core network architecture. Instead, DECT-2020 NR relies on part of the network devices taking the role of a router to relay data through the network. This makes deployment of a DECT-2020 NR network affordable and extremely easy, but due to the nature of the medium access protocol, the routing responsibility adds an additional energy consumption burden to the nodes, who in the IoT domain are likely to be equipped with a limited battery capacity. In this paper, we analyze by system level simulations the energy consumption of DECT-2020 NR networks with different network sizes and topologies and how the reported low latencies can be upheld given the energy constraints of IoT devices.

Daoud, Luka, Rafla, Nader.  2022.  Energy-Efficient Black Hole Router Detection in Network-on-Chip. 2022 IEEE 35th International System-on-Chip Conference (SOCC). :1–6.
The Network-on-Chip (NoC) is the communication heart in Multiprocessors System-on-Chip (MPSoC). It offers an efficient and scalable interconnection platform, which makes it a focal point of potential security threats. Due to outsourcing design, the NoC can be infected with a malicious circuit, known as Hardware Trojan (HT), to leak sensitive information or degrade the system’s performance and function. An HT can form a security threat by consciously dropping packets from the NoC, structuring a Black Hole Router (BHR) attack. This paper presents an end-to-end secure interconnection network against the BHR attack. The proposed scheme is energy-efficient to detect the BHR in runtime with 1% and 2% average throughput and energy consumption overheads, respectively.

Anju, J., Shreelekshmi, R..  2022.  An Enhanced Copy-deterrence scheme for Secure Image Outsourcing in Cloud. 2022 International Conference on Computing, Communication, and Intelligent Systems (ICCCIS). :97–102.
In this paper, we propose a novel watermarking-based copy deterrence scheme for identifying data leaks through authorized query users in secure image outsourcing systems. The scheme generates watermarks unique to each query user, which are embedded in the retrieved encrypted images. During unauthorized distribution, the watermark embedded in the image is extracted to determine the untrustworthy query user. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves minimal information loss, faster embedding and better resistance to JPEG compression attacks compared with the state-of-the-art schemes.

DDoS attacks, one of the oldest forms of cyberthreats, continue to be a favorite tool of mass interruption, presenting cybersecurity hazards to practically every type of company, large and small. As a matter of fact, according to IDC, DDoS attacks are predicted to expand at an 18 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2023, indicating that it is past time to enhance investment in strong mitigation systems. And while some firms may assume they are limited targets for a DDoS assault, the amount of structured internet access to power corporation services and apps exposes everyone to downtime and poor performance if the infrastructure is not protected against such attacks. We propose using correlations between missing packets to increase detection accuracy. Furthermore, to ensure that these correlations are calculated correctly.

Steganography is the technique of hiding a confidential message in an ordinary message where the extraction of embedded information is done at its destination. Among the different carrier files formats; digital images are the most popular. This paper presents a Wavelet-based method for hiding secret information in digital images where skin areas are identified and used as a region of interest. The work presented here is an extension of a method published earlier by the authors that utilized a rule-based approach to detect skin regions. The proposed method, proposed embedding the secret data into the integer Wavelet coefficients of the approximation sub-band of the cover image. When compared to the original technique, experimental results showed a lower error percentage between skin maps detected before the embedding and during the extraction processes. This eventually increased the similarity between the original and the retrieved secret image.

Clark, Nicholas K..  2022.  Enhancing an Information-Centric Network of Things at the Internet Edge with Trust-Based Access Control. 2022 IEEE 8th World Forum on Internet of Things (WF-IoT). :1–6.
This work expands on our prior work on an architecture and supporting protocols to efficiently integrate constrained devices into an Information-Centric Network-based Internet of Things in a way that is both secure and scalable. In this work, we propose a scheme for addressing additional threats and integrating trust-based behavioral observations and attribute-based access control by leveraging the capabilities of less constrained coordinating nodes at the network edge close to IoT devices. These coordinating devices have better insight into the behavior of their constituent devices and access to a trusted overall security management cloud service. We leverage two modules, the security manager (SM) and trust manager (TM). The former provides data confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and authorization, while the latter analyzes the nodes' behavior using a trust model factoring in a set of service and network communication attributes. The trust model allows trust to be integrated into the SM's access control policies, allowing access to resources to be restricted to trusted nodes.

Nowadays, IoT networks and devices exist in our everyday life, capturing and carrying unlimited data. However, increasing penetration of connected systems and devices implies rising threats for cybersecurity with IoT systems suffering from network attacks. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning take advantage of huge volumes of IoT network logs to enhance their cybersecurity in IoT. However, these data are often desired to remain private. Federated Learning (FL) provides a potential solution which enables collaborative training of attack detection model among a set of federated nodes, while preserving privacy as data remain local and are never disclosed or processed on central servers. While FL is resilient and resolves, up to a point, data governance and ownership issues, it does not guarantee security and privacy by design. Adversaries could interfere with the communication process, expose network vulnerabilities, and manipulate the training process, thus affecting the performance of the trained model. In this paper, we present a federated learning model which can successfully detect network attacks in IoT systems. Moreover, we evaluate its performance under various settings of differential privacy as a privacy preserving technique and configurations of the participating nodes. We prove that the proposed model protects the privacy without actually compromising performance. Our model realizes a limited performance impact of only ∼ 7% less testing accuracy compared to the baseline while simultaneously guaranteeing security and applicability.

Madbhavi, Rahul, Srinivasan, Babji.  2022.  Enhancing Performance of Compressive Sensing-based State Estimators using Dictionary Learning. 2022 IEEE International Conference on Power Systems Technology (POWERCON). :1–6.
Smart grids integrate computing and communication infrastructure with conventional power grids to improve situational awareness, control, and safety. Several technologies such as automatic fault detection, automated reconfiguration, and outage management require close network monitoring. Therefore, utilities utilize sensing equipment such as PMUs (phasor measurement units), smart meters, and bellwether meters to obtain grid measurements. However, the expansion in sensing equipment results in an increased strain on existing communication infrastructure. Prior works overcome this problem by exploiting the sparsity of power consumption data in the Haar, Hankel, and Toeplitz transformation bases to achieve sub-Nyquist compression. However, data-driven dictionaries enable superior compression ratios and reconstruction accuracy by learning the sparsifying basis. Therefore, this work proposes using dictionary learning to learn the sparsifying basis of smart meter data. The smart meter data sent to the data centers are compressed using a random projection matrix prior to transmission. These measurements are aggregated to obtain the compressed measurements at the primary nodes. Compressive sensing-based estimators are then utilized to estimate the system states. This approach was validated on the IEEE 33-node distribution system and showed superior reconstruction accuracy over conventional transformation bases and over-complete dictionaries. Voltage magnitude and angle estimation error less than 0.3% mean absolute percentage error and 0.04 degree mean absolute error, respectively, were achieved at compression ratios as high as eight.

To verify the integrity and confidentiality of data communicated through the web is a very big issue worldwide because every person wants very fast computing and secure electronic data communication via the web. The authentication of electronic data is done by hashing algorithms. Presently researchers are using one-time padding to convert variable-length input messages into a block of fixed length and also using constant initial values that are constant for any input message. So this reason we are proposing the autonomous initial value proposed secure hash algorithm-256 (AIVPSHA256) and we are enhancing the performance of the hash function by designing and compuiting its experimental results in python 3.9.5 programming language.

Artificial intelligence (AI) cooperates with multiple industries to improve the overall industry framework. Especially, human emotion recognition plays an indispensable role in supporting medical care, psychological counseling, crime prevention and detection, and crime investigation. The research on emotion recognition includes emotion-specific intonation patterns, literal expressions of emotions, and facial expressions. Recently, the deep learning model of facial emotion recognition aims to capture tiny changes in facial muscles to provide greater recognition accuracy. Hybrid models in facial expression recognition have been constantly proposed to improve the performance of deep learning models in these years. In this study, we proposed an ensemble learning algorithm for the accuracy of the facial emotion recognition model with three deep learning models: VGG16, InceptionResNetV2, and EfficientNetB0. To enhance the performance of these benchmark models, we applied transfer learning, fine-tuning, and data augmentation to implement the training and validation of the Facial Expression Recognition 2013 (FER-2013) Dataset. The developed algorithm finds the best-predicted value by prioritizing the InceptionResNetV2. The experimental results show that the proposed ensemble learning algorithm of priorities edges up 2.81% accuracy of the model identification. The future extension of this study ventures into the Internet of Things (IoT), medical care, and crime detection and prevention.

Shen, Wendi, Yang, Genke.  2022.  An error neighborhood-based detection mechanism to improve the performance of anomaly detection in industrial control systems. 2022 International Conference on Mechanical, Automation and Electrical Engineering (CMAEE). :25—29.
Anomaly detection for devices (e.g, sensors and actuators) plays a crucial role in Industrial Control Systems (ICS) for security protection. The typical framework of deep learning-based anomaly detection includes a model to predict or reconstruct the state of devices and a detection mechanism to determine anomalies. The majority of anomaly detection methods use a fixed threshold detection mechanism to detect anomalous points. However, the anomalies caused by cyberattacks in ICSs are usually continuous anomaly segments. In this paper, we propose a novel detection mechanism to detect continuous anomaly segments. Its core idea is to determine the start and end times of anomalies based on the continuity characteristics of anomalies and the dynamics of error. We conducted experiments on the two real-world datasets for performance evaluation using five baselines. The F1 score increased by 3.8% on average in the SWAT dataset and increased by 15.6% in the WADI dataset. The results show a significant improvement in the performance of baselines using an error neighborhood-based continuity detection mechanism in a real-time manner.

Liao, Mancheng.  2022.  Establishing a Knowledge Base of an Expert System for Criminal Investigation. 2022 3rd International Conference on Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things Engineering (ICBAIE). :562—566.
In the information era, knowledge is becoming increasingly significant for all industries, especially criminal investigation that deeply relies on intelligence and strategies. Therefore, there is an urgent need for effective management and utilization of criminal investigation knowledge. As an important branch of knowledge engineering, the expert system can simulate the thinking pattern of an expert, proposing strategies and solutions based on the knowledge stored in the knowledge base. A crucial step in building the expert system is to construct the knowledge base, which determines the function and capability of the expert system. This paper establishes a practical knowledge base for criminal investigation, combining the technologies of cloud computing with traditional method of manual entry to acquire and process knowledge. The knowledge base covers data information and expert knowledge with detailed classification of rules and cases, providing answers through comparison and reasoning. The knowledge becomes more accurate and reliable after repeated inspection and verification by human experts.
