DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • The strategic, academic, operational leadership and transformation of the Department;
  • Promoting, planning, organising and managing of academic and research programmes and the Department's research profile;
  • Recruitment and management of world class personnel;
  • All financial activities including externally funded projects;
  • Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level;
  • Marketing and growing the Department with the emphasis on growth at graduate level;
  • Leading and promoting the research intensity within the Department in terms of research outputs ranking and postgraduate students.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Associate Professor:

  • A PhD in Computer Science;
  • Academic status in the relevant discipline;
  • A proven research and publication record;
  • National recognition as a researcher;
  • Experience in the successful graduation of Master's and/or PhD candidates;
  • Experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching.

Professor:

  • A PhD in Computer Science;
  • Academic status in the relevant discipline;
  • A proven research and publication record;
  • National and international recognition as a researcher;
  • Experience in the successful graduation of PhD candidates;
  • Experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching.

Head of Department:

Experience in the following:

  • High-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;
  • Managing and leadership of academic activities and staff;
  • Marketing of the Department to obtain research and development contracts and external funding;
  • Managing information technology and technical staff;
  • National and/or international collaboration.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Strong leadership and communication skills;
  • An exceptional research record preferably in one of the Department's research specialisation fields;
  • NRF rating;
  • The candidate should fit into one of the Department's research focus areas.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term.
