To grow our capacity for interdisciplinary and applied research with strong foundations in the core of our discipline, we are advertising for two chairs, in

- Data-oriented Software Engineering, and
- Knowledge Discovery and Machine Learning

They will be supported by several lectureships to be appointed with the help of the successful candidates.

  • Chair in Data-oriented Software Engineering
  • Chair in Knowledge Discovery and Machine Learning

University of Leicester
College of Science and Engineering
Department of Informatics

Salary Grade 10 - competitive Permanent contract

The University of Leicester is a world-leading institution, marked by a belief in the synergy of research and teaching. With over 23,000 students, including 4,300 from overseas, and 3,800 staff, including over 1,200 active researchers, we believe a university should empower, inspire and innovate. Under the leadership of our new President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Boyle, the University is entering an exciting new phase of development with an ambitious and transformative agenda for 2020 and beyond.
Based on our strong foundations in research on Semantics, Algorithm Design and Engineering, Validation and Verification, as well as Software Modelling and Evolution, the Department of Informatics is building excellence, capacity and expertise in areas relevant to Data-Driven Applications Engineering, including

  • Software Technology and Engineering, to collect, integrate, represent and manage data
  • Knowledge Discovery and Machine learning, to analyse data
  • Human Computer Interaction and Systems Engineering, to build usable and useful applications

We currently engage in a range of application domains, drawing on strong interdisciplinary links within our University through the Bioinformatics Network (BINERI), the research institutes for Precision Medicine (LPMI), Space and Earth Observation (LISEO), and the network for Computational Social Science.

As part of a flagship investment we are establishing two chairs in Data-oriented Software Engineering, and Knowledge Discovery and Machine Learning. These chairs will be supported by the appointment of several lecturers, recruited under the guidance of the successful candidates for the senior posts, to create capacity to cooperate with industry and satisfy significant demand for interdisciplinary projects in the above areas.

In Data-oriented Software Engineering, candidates are expected to show expertise in one or more of:

  • Applied and empirical software engineering
  • Architectures and technologies for data collection, management and integration, incl. cloud storage and computing, IoT and modern database technologies
  • Quality and verification of data-driven applications, including correctness and performance, privacy and fairness properties

In Knowledge Discovery and Machine Learning, candidates are expected to show expertise in one or more of:

  • Data mining and machine learning, including algorithms, technologies and applications
  • Data integration and analysis, including semantic approaches and data with uncertainty
  • Computer vision, data visualisation, and natural language processing and their applications

A track record in the application of the above in industrial or interdisciplinary settings is highly desirable.
The roles include an expectation of research excellence and leadership, development and delivery of teaching in the respective areas as well as contributions to the management of the department, college and university.
Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Reiko Heckel on rh122@le.ac.uk, 0116 252 3406.
