Ndichu, Samuel, Ban, Tao, Takahashi, Takeshi, Inoue, Daisuke.  2021.  A Machine Learning Approach to Detection of Critical Alerts from Imbalanced Multi-Appliance Threat Alert Logs. 2021 IEEE International Conference on Big Data (Big Data). :2119–2127.
The extraordinary number of alerts generated by network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) can desensitize security analysts tasked with incident response. Security information and event management systems (SIEMs) perform some rudimentary automation but cannot replicate the decision-making process of a skilled analyst. Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) can detect patterns in data with appropriate training. In practice, the majority of the alert data comprises false alerts, and true alerts form only a small proportion. Consequently, a naive engine that classifies all security alerts into the majority class can yield a superficial high accuracy close to 100%. Without any correction for the class imbalance, the false alerts will dominate algorithmic predictions resulting in poor generalization performance. We propose a machine-learning approach to address the class imbalance problem in multi-appliance security alert data and automate the security alert analysis process performed in security operations centers (SOCs). We first used the neighborhood cleaning rule (NCR) to identify and remove ambiguous, noisy, and redundant false alerts. Then, we applied the support vector machine synthetic minority oversampling technique (SVMSMOTE) to generate synthetic training true alerts. Finally, we fit and evaluated the decision tree and random forest classifiers. In the experiments, using alert data from eight security appliances, we demonstrated that the proposed method can significantly reduce the need for manual auditing, decreasing the number of uninspected alerts and achieving a performance of 99.524% in recall.

Huang, Xuanbo, Xue, Kaiping, Xing, Yitao, Hu, Dingwen, Li, Ruidong, Sun, Qibin.  2020.  FSDM: Fast Recovery Saturation Attack Detection and Mitigation Framework in SDN. 2020 IEEE 17th International Conference on Mobile Ad Hoc and Sensor Systems (MASS). :329–337.
The whole Software-Defined Networking (SDN) system might be out of service when the control plane is overloaded by control plane saturation attacks. In this attack, a malicious host can manipulate massive table-miss packets to exhaust the control plane resources. Even though many studies have focused on this problem, systems still suffer from more influenced switches because of centralized mitigation policies, and long recovery delay because of the remaining attack flows. To solve these problems, we propose FSDM, a Fast recovery Saturation attack Detection and Mitigation framework. For detection, FSDM extracts the distribution of Control Channel Occupation Rate (CCOR) to detect the attack and locates the port that attackers come from. For mitigation, with the attacker's location and distributed Mitigation Agents, FSDM adopts different policies to migrate or block attack flows, which influences fewer switches and protects the control plane from resource exhaustion. Besides, to reduce the system recovery delay, FSDM equips a novel functional module called Force\_Checking, which enables the whole system to quickly clean up the remaining attack flows and recovery faster. Finally, we conducted extensive experiments, which show that, with the increasing of attack PPS (Packets Per Second), FSDM only suffers a minor recovery delay increase. Compared with traditional methods without cleaning up remaining flows, FSDM saves more than 81% of ping RTT under attack rate ranged from 1000 to 4000 PPS, and successfully reduced the delay of 87% of HTTP requests time under large attack rate ranged from 5000 to 30000 PPS.

Qi, Xiaoxia, Shen, Shuai, Wang, Qijin.  2020.  A Moving Target Defense Technology Based on SCIT. 2020 International Conference on Computer Engineering and Application (ICCEA). :454—457.
Moving target defense technology is one of the revolutionary techniques that is “changing the rules of the game” in the field of network technology, according to recent propositions from the US Science and Technology Commission. Building upon a recently-developed approach called Self Cleansing Intrusion Tolerance (SCIT), this paper proposes a moving target defense system that is based on server switching and cleaning. A protected object is maneuvered to improve its safety by exploiting software diversity and thereby introducing randomness and unpredictability into the system. Experimental results show that the improved system increases the difficulty of attack and significantly reduces the likelihood of a system being invaded, thus serving to enhance system security.

Alzahrani, A., Feki, J..  2020.  Toward a Natural Language-Based Approach for the Specification of Decisional-Users Requirements. 2020 3rd International Conference on Computer Applications Information Security (ICCAIS). :1–6.
The number of organizations adopting the Data Warehouse (DW) technology along with data analytics in order to improve the effectiveness of their decision-making processes is permanently increasing. Despite the efforts invested, the DW design remains a great challenge research domain. More accurately, the design quality of the DW depends on several aspects; among them, the requirement-gathering phase is a critical and complex task. In this context, we propose a Natural language (NL) NL-template based design approach, which is twofold; firstly, it facilitates the involvement of decision-makers in the early step of the DW design; indeed, using NL is a good and natural means to encourage the decision-makers to express their requirements as query-like English sentences. Secondly, our approach aims to generate a DW multidimensional schema from a set of gathered requirements (as OLAP: On-Line-Analytical-Processing queries, written according to the NL suggested templates). This approach articulates around: (i) two NL-templates for specifying multidimensional components, and (ii) a set of five heuristic rules for extracting the multidimensional concepts from requirements. Really, we are developing a software prototype that accepts the decision-makers' requirements then automatically identifies the multidimensional components of the DW model.

In mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSN), data imprecision is a common problem. Decision making in real time applications may be greatly affected by a minor error. Even though there are many existing techniques that take advantage of the spatio-temporal characteristics exhibited in mobile environments, few measure the trustworthiness of sensor data accuracy. We propose a unique online context-aware data cleaning method that measures trustworthiness by employing an initial candidate reduction through the analysis of trust parameters used in financial markets theory. Sensors with similar trajectory behaviors are assigned trust scores estimated through the calculation of “betas” for finding the most accurate data to trust. Instead of devoting all the trust into a single candidate sensor's data to perform the cleaning, a Diversified Trust Portfolio (DTP) is generated based on the selected set of spatially autocorrelated candidate sensors. Our results show that samples cleaned by the proposed method exhibit lower percent error when compared to two well-known and effective data cleaning algorithms in tested outdoor and indoor scenarios.

Park, Jonggyu, Kang, Dong Hyun, Eom, Young Ik.  2016.  File Defragmentation Scheme for a Log-Structured File System. Proceedings of the 7th ACM SIGOPS Asia-Pacific Workshop on Systems. :19:1–19:7.

In recent years, many researchers have focused on log-structured file systems (LFS), because it gracefully enhances the random write performance and efficiently resolves the consistency issue. However, the write policy of LFS can cause a file fragmentation problem, which degrades sequential read performance of the file system. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between file fragmentation and the sequential read performance, considering the characteristics of underlying storage devices. We also propose a novel file defragmentation scheme on LFS to effectively address the file fragmentation problem. Our scheme reorders the valid data blocks belonging to a victim segment based on the inode numbers during the cleaning process of LFS. In our experiments, our scheme eliminates file fragmentation by up to 98.5% when compared with traditional LFS.
