Recent concepts in defense herald an increasing degree of automation of future military systems, with an emphasis on accelerating sensing-to-decision loops at the tactical edge, reducing their network communication footprint, and improving the inference quality of intelligent components in the loop. These requirements pose resource management challenges, calling for operating-system-like constructs that optimize the use of limited computational resources at the tactical edge. This paper describes these challenges and presents IoBT-OS, an operating system for the Internet of Battlefield Things that aims to optimize decision latency, improve decision accuracy, and reduce corresponding resource demands on computational and network components. A simple case-study with initial evaluation results is shown from a target tracking application scenario.

This document paper presents a critical and condensed analyze on series of devices that are intended for the military field, making an overview analysis of the technical solutions presented and that identifying those aspects that are really important for the military field or that offering a new approach. We currently have a wide range of medical devices that can be adapted for use in the military, but this adaptation must follow some well-defined aspects. A device that does not offer 100% reliability will be difficult to adopt in a military system, where mistakes are not allowed.

Conflicts may arise at any time during military debriefing meetings, especially in high intensity deployed settings. When such conflicts arise, it takes time to get everyone back into a receptive state of mind so that they engage in reflective discussion rather than unproductive arguing. It has been proposed by some that the use of social robots equipped with social abilities such as emotion regulation through rapport building may help to deescalate these situations to facilitate critical operational decisions. However, in military settings, the same AI agent used in the pre-brief of a mission may not be the same one used in the debrief. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a brief rapport-building session with a social robot could create a connection between a human and a robot agent, and whether consistency in the embodiment of the robot agent was necessary for maintaining this connection once formed. We report the results of a pilot study conducted at the United States Air Force Academy which simulated a military mission (i.e., Gravity and Strike). Participants' connection with the agent, sense of trust, and overall likeability revealed that early rapport building can be beneficial for military missions.

The Robot Operating System (ROS) is a widely adopted standard robotic middleware. However, its preliminary design is devoid of any network security features. Military grade unmanned systems must be guarded against network threats. ROS 2 is built upon the Data Distribution Service (DDS) standard and is designed to provide solutions to identified ROS 1 security vulnerabilities by incorporating authentication, encryption, and process profile features, which rely on public key infrastructure. The Department of Defense is looking to use ROS 2 for its military-centric robotics platform. This paper seeks to demonstrate that ROS 2 and its DDS security architecture can serve as a functional platform for use in military grade unmanned systems, particularly in unmanned Naval aerial swarms. In this paper, we focus on the viability of ROS 2 to safeguard communications between swarms and a ground control station (GCS). We test ROS 2's ability to mitigate and withstand certain cyber threats, specifically that of rogue nodes injecting unauthorized data and accessing services that will disable parts of the UAV swarm. We use the Gazebo robotics simulator to target individual UAVs to ascertain the effectiveness of our attack vectors under specific conditions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of ROS 2 in mitigating the chosen attack vectors but observed a measurable operational delay within our simulations.

Robots are becoming more and more prevalent in many real world scenarios. Housekeeping, medical aid, human assistance are a few common implementations of robots. Military and Security are also major areas where robotics is being researched and implemented. Robots with the purpose of surveillance in war zones and terrorist scenarios need specific functionalities to perform their tasks with precision and efficiency. In this paper, we present a model of Military Surveillance Robot developed using Robot Operating System. The map generation based on Kinect sensor is presented and some test case scenarios are discussed with results.

Complex military systems are typically cyber-physical systems which are the targets of high level threat actors, and must be able to operate within a highly contested cyber environment. There is an emerging need to provide a strong level of assurance against these threat actors, but the process by which this assurance can be tested and evaluated is not so clear. This paper outlines an initial framework developed through research for evaluating the cyber-worthiness of complex mission critical systems using threat models developed in SysML. The framework provides a visual model of the process by which a threat actor could attack the system. It builds on existing concepts from system safety engineering and expands on how to present the risks and mitigations in an understandable manner.

Today, as surveillance systems are widely used for indoor and outdoor monitoring applications, there is a growing interest in real-time generation detection and there are many different applications for real-time generation detection and analysis. Two-dimensional videos; It is used in multimedia content-based indexing, information acquisition, visual surveillance and distributed cross-camera surveillance systems, human tracking, traffic monitoring and similar applications. It is of great importance for the development of systems for national security by following a moving target within the scope of military applications. In this research, a more efficient solution is proposed in addition to the existing methods. Therefore, we present YOLO, a new approach to object detection for military applications.
