Due to centralized control and programmable capability of the SDN architecture, network administrators can easily manage and control the whole network through the centralized controller. According to the SDN architecture, the SDN controller is vulnerable to distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks. Thus, a failure of SDN controller is a major leak for security concern. The objectives of paper is therefore to detect the DDOS attacks and classify the normal or attack traffic in SDN network using machine learning algorithms. In this proposed system, polynomial SVM is applied to compare to existing linear SVM by using scapy, which is packet generation tool and RYU SDN controller. According to the experimental result, polynomial SVM achieves 3% better accuracy and 34% lower false alarm rate compared to Linear SVM.

Kaljic, Enio, Maric, Almir, Njemcevic, Pamela.  2019.  DoS attack mitigation in SDN networks using a deeply programmable packet-switching node based on a hybrid FPGA/CPU data plane architecture. 2019 XXVII International Conference on Information, Communication and Automation Technologies (ICAT). :1–6.
The application of the concept of software-defined networks (SDN) has, on the one hand, led to the simplification and reduction of switches price, and on the other hand, has created a significant number of problems related to the security of the SDN network. In several studies was noted that these problems are related to the lack of flexibility and programmability of the data plane, which is likely first to suffer potential denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. One possible way to overcome this problem is to increase the flexibility of the data plane by increasing the depth of programmability of the packet-switching nodes below the level of flow table management. Therefore, this paper investigates the opportunity of using the architecture of deeply programmable packet-switching nodes (DPPSN) in the implementation of a firewall. Then, an architectural model of the firewall based on a hybrid FPGA/CPU data plane architecture has been proposed and implemented. Realized firewall supports three models of DoS attacks mitigation: DoS traffic filtering on the output interface, DoS traffic filtering on the input interface, and DoS attack redirection to the honeypot. Experimental evaluation of the implemented firewall has shown that DoS traffic filtering at the input interface is the best strategy for DoS attack mitigation, which justified the application of the concept of deep network programmability.

with the development of SDN, ICN and 5G networks, the research of future network becomes a hot topic. Based on the design idea of SDN network, this paper analyzes the propagation model and detection method of malicious code in future network. We select characteristics of SDN and analyze the features use different feature selection methods and sort the features. After comparison the influence of running time by different classification algorithm of different feature selection, we analyze the choice of reduction dimension m, and find out the different types of malicious code corresponding to the optimal feature subset and matching classification method, designed for malware detection system. We analyze the node migration rate of malware in mobile network and its effect on the outbreak of the time. In this way, it can provide reference for the management strategy of the switch node or the host node by future network controller.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is very popular due to the benefits it provides such as scalability, flexibility, monitoring, and ease of innovation. However, it needs to be properly protected from security threats. One major attack that plagues the SDN network is the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. There are several approaches to prevent the DDoS attack in an SDN network. We have evaluated a few machine learning techniques, i.e., J48, Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN), to detect and block the DDoS attack in an SDN network. The evaluation process involved training and selecting the best model for the proposed network and applying it in a mitigation and prevention script to detect and mitigate attacks. The results showed that J48 performs better than the other evaluated algorithms, especially in terms of training and testing time.

Pratama, R. F., Suwastika, N. A., Nugroho, M. A..  2018.  Design and Implementation Adaptive Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) for Attack Prevention in Software-Defined Network (SDN) Architecture. 2018 6th International Conference on Information and Communication Technology (ICoICT). :299-304.

Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is a tool for securing networks from any malicious packet that could be sent from specific host. IPS can be installed on SDN network that has centralized logic architecture, so that IPS doesnt need to be installed on lots of nodes instead it has to be installed alongside the controller as center of logic network. IPS still has a flaw and that is the block duration would remain the same no matter how often a specific host attacks. For this reason, writer would like to make a system that not only integrates IPS on the SDN, but also designs an adaptive IPS by utilizing a fuzzy logic that can decide how long blocks are based on the frequency variable and type of attacks. From the results of tests that have been done, SDN network that has been equipped with adaptive IPS has the ability to detect attacks and can block the attacker host with the duration based on the frequency and type of attacks. The final result obtained is to make the SDN network safer by adding 0.228 milliseconds as the execute time required for the fuzzy algorithm in one process.

Prakash, A., Priyadarshini, R..  2018.  An Intelligent Software defined Network Controller for preventing Distributed Denial of Service Attack. 2018 Second International Conference on Inventive Communication and Computational Technologies (ICICCT). :585–589.

Software Defined Network (SDN) architecture is a new and novel way of network management mechanism. In SDN, switches do not process the incoming packets like conventional network computing environment. They match for the incoming packets in the forwarding tables and if there is none it will be sent to the controller for processing which is the operating system of the SDN. A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is a biggest threat to cyber security in SDN network. The attack will occur at the network layer or the application layer of the compromised systems that are connected to the network. In this paper a machine learning based intelligent method is proposed which can detect the incoming packets as infected or not. The different machine learning algorithms adopted for accomplishing the task are Naive Bayes, K-Nearest neighbor (KNN) and Support vector machine (SVM) to detect the anomalous behavior of the data traffic. These three algorithms are compared according to their performances and KNN is found to be the suitable one over other two. The performance measure is taken here is the detection rate of infected packets.
