A covert channel is a communication channel that is subjugated for illegal flow of information in a way that violates system security policies. It is a dangerous, invisible, undetectable, and developed security attack. Recently, Packet length covert channel has motivated many researchers as it is a one of the most undetectable network covert channels. Packet length covert channel generates a covert traffic that is very similar to normal terrific which complicates the detection of such type of covert channels. This motivates us to introduce a machine learning based detection scheme. Recently, a machine learning approach has proved its capability in many different fields especially in security field as it usually brings up a reliable and realistic results. Based in our developed content and frequency-based features, the developed detection scheme has been fully trained and tested. Our detection scheme has gained an excellent degree of detection accuracy which reaches 98% (zero false negative rate and 0.02 false positive rate).
Recent advances in Cross-Technology Communication (CTC) enable the coexistence and collaboration among heterogeneous wireless devices operating in the same ISM band (e.g., Wi-Fi, ZigBee, and Bluetooth in 2.4 GHz). However, state-of-the-art CTC schemes are vulnerable to spoofing attacks since there is no practice authentication mechanism yet. This paper proposes a scheme to enable the spoofing attack detection for CTC in heterogeneous wireless networks by using physical layer information. First, we propose a model to detect ZigBee packets and measure the corresponding Received Signal Strength (RSS) on Wi-Fi devices. Then, we design a collaborative mechanism between Wi-Fi and ZigBee devices to detect the spoofing attack. Finally, we implement and evaluate our methods through experiments on commercial off-the- shelf (COTS) Wi-Fi and ZigBee devices. Our results show that it is possible to measure the RSS of ZigBee packets on Wi-Fi device and detect spoofing attack with both a high detection rate and a low false positive rate in heterogeneous wireless networks.
Network coding is a potential method that numerous investigators have move forwarded due to its significant advantages to enhance the proficiency of data communication. In this work, utilize simulations to assess the execution of various network topologies employing network coding. By contrasting the results of network and without network coding, it insists that network coding can improve the throughput, end-to-end delays, Packet Delivery Rate (PDR) and consistency. This paper presents the comparative performance analysis of network coding such as, XOR, LNC, and RLNC. The results demonstrates the XOR technique has attractive outcomes and can improve the real time performance metrics i.e.; throughput, end-to-end delay and PDR by substantial limitations. The analysis has been carried out based on packet size and also number of packets to be transmitted. Results illustrates that the network coding facilitate in dependence between networks.
With the integration of computing, communication, and physical processes, the modern power grid is becoming a large and complex cyber physical power system (CPPS). This trend is intended to modernize and improve the efficiency of the power grid, yet it makes the CPPS vulnerable to potential cascading failures caused by cyber-attacks, e.g., the attacks that are originated by the cyber network of CPPS. To prevent these risks, it is essential to analyze how cyber-attacks can be conducted against the CPPS and how they can affect the power systems. In light of that General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) has been widely used in CPPS, this paper provides a case study by examining possible cyber-attacks against the cyber-physical power systems with GPRS-based SCADA system. We analyze the vulnerabilities of GPRS-based SCADA systems and focus on DoS attacks and message spoofing attacks. Furthermore, we show the consequence of these attacks against power systems by a simulation using the IEEE 9-node system, and the results show the validity of cascading failures propagated through the systems under our proposed attacks.
In this paper, we propose an accumulated loss recovery algorithm on overlay multicast system using Fountain codes. Fountain code successfully decodes the packet loss, but it is weak in accumulated losses on multicast tree. The proposed algorithm overcomes an accumulated loss and significantly reduces delay on overlay multicast tree.
Mobile Ad-hoc Network is highly susceptible towards the security attacks due to its dynamic topology, resource constraint, energy constraint operations, limited physical security and lack of infrastructure. Misleading routing attack (MIRA) in MANET intend to delay packet to its fullest in order to generate time outs at the source as packets will not reach in time. Its main objective is to generate delay and increase network overhead. It is a variation to the sinkhole attack. In this paper, we have proposed a detection scheme to detect the malicious nodes at route discovery as well as at packet transmissions. The simulation results of MIRA attack indicate that though delay is increased by 91.30% but throughput is not affected which indicates that misleading routing attack is difficult to detect. The proposed detection scheme when applied to misleading routing attack suggests a significant decrease in delay.
The hardware and low-level software in many mobile devices are capable of mobile-to-mobile communication, including ad-hoc 802.11, Bluetooth, and cognitive radios. We have started to leverage this capability to provide interpersonal communication both over infrastructure networks (the Internet), and over ad-hoc and delay-tolerant networks composed of the mobile devices themselves. This network is decentralized in the sense that it can function without any infrastructure, but does take advantage of infrastructure connections when available. All interpersonal communication is encrypted and authenticated so packets may be carried by devices belonging to untrusted others. The decentralized model of security builds a flexible trust network on top of the social network of communicating individuals. This social network can be used to prioritize packets to or from individuals closely related by the social network. Other packets are prioritized to favor packets likely to consume fewer network resources. Each device also has a policy that determines how many packets may be forwarded, with the goal of providing useful interpersonal communications using at most 1% of any given resource on mobile devices. One challenge in a fully decentralized network is routing. Our design uses Rendezvous Points (RPs) and Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs) for delivery over infrastructure networks, and hop-limited broadcast and Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) within the wireless ad-hoc network.
This paper proposes a new cross-layer based packet scheduling scheme for multimedia traffic in satellite Long Term Evolution (LTE) network which adopts MIMO technology. The Satellite LTE air interface will provide global coverage and hence complement its terrestrial counterpart in the provision of mobile services (especially multimedia services) to users across the globe. A dynamic packet scheduling scheme is very important towards actualizing an effective utilization of the limited available resources in satellite LTE networks without compromise to the Quality of Service (QoS) demands of multimedia traffic. Hence, the need for an effective packet scheduling algorithm cannot be overemphasized. The aim of this paper is to propose a new scheduling algorithm tagged Cross-layer Based Queue-Aware (CBQA) Scheduler that will provide a good trade-off among QoS, fairness and throughput. The newly proposed scheduler is compared to existing ones through simulations and various performance indices have been used. A land mobile dual-polarized GEO satellite system has been considered for this work.
