Visible to the public Secure Cyber-Physical DNA Manufacturing for Life Science Applications and Ultra-Long-Term Data Storage

This first-year project will develop a cyber-physical co-design process and apply it to the manufacturing of large-scale libraries of synthetic DNA oligonucleotides. Synthetic DNA plays an essential role in genomics research, and is poised for widespread consumption if its costs can be lowered dramatically, as large libraries of different DNA sequences are particularly useful in genetic analysis. DNA is also being investigated as a high-density medium for archival storage of digital data.

Visible to the public CRII: CPS: Emerging Markets and Myopic Decision-Making in Multi-Modal Transportation Systems: Modeling and Validation

In this project, we aim to create high-fidelity models, validated with real-world data, of mixed- mode travel decisions and emerging mobility markets. A growing subset of travelers make decisions informed by apps that optimize (mixed-mode) routes based on user-defined preferences. Locally optimized solutions tend to cause inefficiencies that are exacerbated by risk-sensitivity (arising from endogenous and exogenous uncertainties) in travelers.

Visible to the public Provably-safe Interventions for Human-Cyber-Physical Systems (HCPS)

Human interaction with the physical world is increasingly mediated by autonomy, as planes assist pilots, robots assist surgeons, and cars assist drivers. Automation is introduced in such systems to aid humans and guarantee safety and performance. However, such guarantees are hard to provide, since humans may misunderstand the automation's intentions or behave in an unanticipated manner; tragic examples like the crash of Air France flight 447 illustrate that such confusion between pilots and autopilots can lead to catastrophic outcomes. Although some applications may someda

Visible to the public Cyber Physical Manufacturing Cloud: Architecture, Communication Methods, Testbed, and Applications

Cyber-physical systems are integrations of computation, networking, and physical processes and they are increasingly finding applications in manufacturing. Cloud manufacturing integrates cloud computing and service- oriented technologies with manufacturing processes and provides manufacturing services in manufacturing clouds. A cyber physical system for manufacturing is not a manufacturing cloud if it does not use virtualization technique in cloud computing and service oriented architecture in service computing.

Visible to the public CPS: TTP Option: Synergy: Collaborative: Internet of self-powered sensors-Towards a scalable long-term condition-based monitori

Abstract: This research is investigating a cyber-physical framework for scalable, long-term monitoring and condition- based maintenance of civil infrastructures. Civil infrastructure constitutes a network of interdependent sys- tems and utilities (e.g., highways, bridges, rail systems, buildings) that are necessary for supporting social and economic activities.

Visible to the public CPS: Synergy: Tracking Fish Movement with a School of Gliding Robotic Fish

The goal of this project is to create an integrative framework for the design of coupled biological and robotic systems that accommodates system uncertainties and competing objectives in a rigorous, holistic, and effective manner. The design principles are developed using a concrete, end-to-end application of tracking and modeling fish movement with a network of gliding robotic fish. The proposed robotic platform is an energy-efficient underwater gliding robotic fish that travels by changing its buoyancy and mass distribution (gliding) or by flapping tail fin (swimming).
