Drone based applications have progressed significantly in recent years across many industries, including agriculture. This paper proposes a sporadically connected cyber-physical system for assisting winemakers and minimizing the travel time to remote and poorly connected infrastructures. A set of representative diseases and conditions, which will be monitored by land-bound sensors in combination with multispectral images, is identified. To collect accurate data, a trustworthy and secured communication of the drone with the sensors and the base station should be established. We propose to use an Internet of Things framework for establishing a chain of trust by securely onboarding drones, sensors and base station, and providing self-adaptation support for the use case. Furthermore, we perform a security analysis of the use case for identifying potential threats and security controls that should be in place for mitigating them.

Brushless synchronous generators (BSG) are typically used to produce an island network whose voltage is close to the nominal voltage of the generator. Generators are often used also in test-field applications where also zero output voltage is needed. The exciter construction and magnetic remanence may lead to a situation where the non-loaded generator terminal voltage cannot be controlled close to zero but a significant voltage is always generated because the exciter remanence. A new brushless synchronous generator excitation and de-excitation converter topology for test applications is proposed. The purpose is to achieve full voltage control from zero to nominal level without modifications to the generator. Insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) and Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology are used to achieve the required fast and accurate control. In the work, simulation models were first derived to characterize the control performance. The proposed converter topology was then verified with the simulation model and tested empirically with a 400 kVA brushless synchronous generator. The results indicate that the exciter remanence and self-excitation can be controlled through the exciter stationary field winding when the proposed converter topology controls the field winding current. Consequently, in highly dynamical situations, the system is unaffected by mechanical stresses and wear in the generator.

Sharma, Anurag, Mohanty, Suman, Islam, Md. Ruhul.  2021.  An Experimental Analysis on Malware Detection in Executable Files using Machine Learning. 2021 8th International Conference on Smart Computing and Communications (ICSCC). :178–182.
In the recent time due to advancement of technology, Malware and its clan have continued to advance and become more diverse. Malware otherwise Malicious Software consists of Virus, Trojan horse, Adware, Spyware etc. This said software leads to extrusion of data (Spyware), continuously flow of Ads (Adware), modifying or damaging the system files (Virus), or access of personal information (Trojan horse). Some of the major factors driving the growth of these attacks are due to poorly secured devices and the ease of availability of tools in the Internet with which anyone can attack any system. The attackers or the developers of Malware usually lean towards blending of malware into the executable file, which makes it hard to detect the presence of malware in executable files. In this paper we have done experimental study on various algorithms of Machine Learning for detecting the presence of Malware in executable files. After testing Naïve Bayes, KNN and SVM, we found out that SVM was the most suited algorithm and had the accuracy of 94%. We then created a web application where the user could upload executable file and test the authenticity of the said executable file if it is a Malware file or a benign file.

Security of data and information in servers connected to networks that provide services to user computers, is the most important thing to maintain data privacy and security in network security management mechanisms. Weaknesses in the server security system can be exploited by intruders to disrupt the security of the server. One way to maintain server security is to implement an intrusion detection system using the Intrusion Detection System. This research is experimenting to create a security system prototype, monitoring, and evaluating server security systems using Snort and alert notifications that can improve security monitoring for server security. The system can detect intrusion attacks and provide warning messages and attack information through the Intrusion Detection System monitoring system. The results show that snort and alert notifications on the security server can work well, efficiently, and can be handled quickly. Testing attacks with Secure Shell Protocol and File Transfer Protocol Brute Force, Ping of Death and scanning port attacks requires a detection time of no more than one second, and all detection test results are detected and send real-time notification alerts to the Administrator.

Efficient low-power accelerators for Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) largely benefit from quantization and approximation, which are typically applied layer-wise for efficient hardware implementation. In this work, we present a novel strategy for efficient combination of these concepts at a deeper level, which is at each channel or kernel. We first apply layer-wise, low bit-width, linear quantization and truncation-based approximate multipliers to the CNN computation. Then, based on a state-of-the-art resiliency analysis, we are able to apply a kernel-wise approximation and quantization scheme with negligible accuracy losses, without further retraining. Our proposed strategy is implemented in a specialized framework for fast design space exploration. This optimization leads to a boost in estimated power savings of up to 34% in residual CNN architectures for image classification, compared to the base quantized architecture.

The behavior of the Current Transformer (CTs) is of utmost importance for protection engineers to ensure reliable operation of power system. CT magnetic saturation is a well-known phenomenon when analyzing its performance characteristics. Nevertheless, transient conditions in the system might be different every time. A good understanding of the magnetic saturation of different CT designs and the effect of saturation on the protection schemes is imperative for developing a robust and dependable protection system. In this paper, various factors that affect CT saturation like X/R ratio, large current magnitudes, DC offset, burden and magnetization remanence are discussed. Analysis of CT saturation based on changes to burden and remanence is performed. In addition to that, the effect of saturation due to these factors on distance protection are presented with test results and analysis. Saturation conditions are analyzed on mho distance elements during phase to ground and three phase faults. Finally, a practical approach to efficiently test the performance of protection schemes under CT saturation conditions is proposed using COMTRADE play back. COMTRADE play back files for various scenarios of CT saturation conditions are generated and used for testing the performance of the protection scheme.

Tufail, Shahid, Batool, Shanzeh, Sarwat, Arif I..  2021.  False Data Injection Impact Analysis In AI-Based Smart Grid. SoutheastCon 2021. :01—07.
As the traditional grids are transitioning to the smart grid, they are getting more prone to cyber-attacks. Among all the cyber-attack one of the most dangerous attack is false data injection attack. When this attack is performed with historical information of the data packet the attack goes undetected. As the false data is included for training and testing the model, the accuracy is decreased, and decision making is affected. In this paper we analyzed the impact of the false data injection attack(FDIA) on AI based smart grid. These analyses were performed using two different multi-layer perceptron architectures with one of the independent variables being compared and modified by the attacker. The root-mean squared values were compared with different models.

With the evolution of the communication technology, fast and efficient tools for secure exchanged data are highly required. Through this research work, we introduce a simplified and fast chaos-based scheme for multimedia data encryption and in particular for color image encryption application. The new algorithm is based on an extracted four-dimension (4-D) discrete time map. The proposed 4-D chaos system includes seven (07) nonlinear terms and four (04) controllers to generate a robust chaos that can satisfy the encryption requirements. The performance of this image encryption algorithm are analyzed with the help of four important factors which are key space, correlation, complexity and running time. Results of the security analysis compared to some of similar proposals, show that our encryption scheme is more effective in terms of key stream cipher space, correlation, complexity and running time.

Third party mobile applications are dominating the business strategies of organisations and have become an integral part of personal life of individuals. These applications are used for financial transactions, sharing of sensitive data etc. The recent breaches in Android clearly indicate that use of third party applications have become a serious security threat. By design, Android framework keeps all these applications in untrusted domain. Due to this a common policy of resource control exists for all such applications. Further, user discretion in granting permissions to specific applications is not effective because users are not always aware of deep functionalities, mala fide intentions (in case of spywares) and bugs/flaws in these third-party applications. In this regard, we propose a security scheme to mitigate unauthorised access of resources by third party applications. Our proposed scheme is based on SEAndroid policies and achieves fine grained confinement with respect to access control for the third party applications. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed scheme is unique and first of its kind. The proposed scheme is integrated with Android Oreo 8.1.0 for performance and security analysis. It is compatible with any Android device with AOSP support.

IoT honeypots that mimic the behavior of IoT devices for threat analysis are becoming increasingly important. Existing honeypot systems use devices with a specific version of firmware installed to monitor cyber attacks. However, honeypots frequently receive requests targeting devices and firmware that are different from themselves. When honeypots return an error response to such a request, the attack is terminated, and the monitoring fails. To solve this problem, we introduce FirmPot, a framework that automatically generates intelligent-interaction honeypots using firmware. This framework has a firmware emulator optimized for honeypot generation and learns the behavior of embedded applications by using machine learning. The generated honeypots continue to interact with attackers by a mechanism that returns the best from the emulated responses to the attack request instead of an error response. We experimented on embedded web applications of wireless routers based on the open-source OpenWrt. As a result, our framework generated honeypots that mimicked the embedded web applications of eight vendors and ten different CPU architectures. Furthermore, our approach to the interaction improved the session length with attackers compared to existing ones.

This paper presents a management system for a fleet of autonomous mobile robots performing logistics in security-heterogeneous factories. Loading and unloading goods and parts between workstations in these dynamic environments often demands from the mobile robots to share space and resources such as corridors, interlocked security doors and elevators among themselves. This model explores a dynamic task scheduling and assignment to the robots taking into account their location, tasks previously assigned and battery levels, all the while being aware of the physical constraints of the installation. The benefits of the proposed architecture were validated through a set of experiments in a mockup of INCM's shop-floor environment. During these tests 3 robots operated continuously for several hours, self-charging without any human intervention.

Williams, Joseph, MacDermott, Áine, Stamp, Kellyann, Iqbal, Farkhund.  2021.  Forensic Analysis of Fitbit Versa: Android vs iOS. 2021 IEEE Security and Privacy Workshops (SPW). :318–326.
Fitbit Versa is the most popular of its predecessors and successors in the Fitbit faction. Increasingly data stored on these smart fitness devices, their linked applications and cloud datacenters are being used for criminal convictions. There is limited research for investigators on wearable devices and specifically exploring evidence identification and methods of extraction. In this paper we present our analysis of Fitbit Versa using Cellebrite UFED and MSAB XRY. We present a clear scope for investigation and data significance based on the findings from our experiments. The data recovery will include logical and physical extractions using devices running Android 9 and iOS 12, comparing between Cellebrite and XRY capabilities. This paper discusses databases and datatypes that can be recovered using different extraction and analysis techniques, providing a robust outlook of data availability. We also discuss the accuracy of recorded data compared to planned test instances, verifying the accuracy of individual data types. The verifiable accuracy of some datatypes could prove useful if such data was required during the evidentiary processes of a forensic investigation.

In this current age, stakeholders exchange legal documents, as well as documents that are official, sensitive and confidential via digital channels[1]. To securely communicate information between stakeholders is not an easy task considering the intentional or unintentional changes and possible attacks that can occur during communication. This paper focuses on protecting and securing data by hiding the data using steganography techniques, after encrypting the data to avoid unauthorized changes or modification made by adversaries to the data through using the Simplified Data Encryption Technique. By leveraging on these two approaches, secret data security intensifies to two levels and a steganography image of high quality is attained. Cryptography converts plaintext into cipher text (unreadable text); whereas steganography is the technique of hiding secret messages in other messages. First encryption of data is done using the Simplified Data Encryption Standard (S-DES) algorithm after which the message encrypted is embedded in the cover image by means of the Least Significant Bit (LSB) approach.

Ponugoti, Kushal K., Srinivasan, Sudarshan K., Mathure, Nimish.  2021.  Formal Verification Approach to Detect Always-On Denial of Service Trojans in Pipelined Circuits. 2021 28th IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits, and Systems (ICECS). :1–6.
Always-On Denial of Service (DoS) Trojans with power drain payload can be disastrous in systems where on-chip power resources are limited. These Trojans are designed so that they have no impact on system behavior and hence, harder to detect. A formal verification method is presented to detect sequential always-on DoS Trojans in pipelined circuits and pipelined microprocessors. Since the method is proof-based, it provides a 100% accurate classification of sequential Trojan components. Another benefit of the approach is that it does not require a reference model, which is one of the requirements of many Trojan detection techniques (often a bottleneck to practical application). The efficiency and scalability of the proposed method have been evaluated on 36 benchmark circuits. The most complex of these benchmarks has as many as 135,898 gates. Detection times are very efficient with a 100% rate of detection, i.e., all Trojan sequential elements were detected and all non-trojan sequential elements were classified as such.

The advent of 5G, one of the most recent and promising technologies currently under deployment, fulfills the emerging needs of mobile subscribers by introducing several new technological advancements. However, this may lead to numerous attacks in the emerging 5G networks. Thus, to guarantee the secure transmission of user data, 5G Authentication protocols such as Extensible Authentication Protocol - Authenticated Key Agreement Protocol (EAP-AKA) were developed. These protocols play an important role in ensuring security to the users as well as their data. However, there exists no guarantees about the security of the protocols. Thus formal verification is necessary to ensure that the authentication protocols are devoid of vulnerabilities or security loopholes. Towards this goal, we formally verify the security of the 5G EAP-AKA protocol using an automated verification tool called ProVerif. ProVerif identifies traces of attacks and checks for security loopholes that can be accessed by the attackers. In addition, we model the complete architecture of the 5G EAP-AKA protocol using the language called typed pi-calculus and analyze the protocol architecture through symbolic model checking. Our analysis shows that some cryptographic parameters in the architecture can be accessed by the attackers which cause the corresponding security properties to be violated.

Today’s edge networks continue to see an increasing number of deployed IoT devices. These IoT devices aim to increase productivity and efficiency; however, they are plagued by a myriad of vulnerabilities. Industry and academia have proposed protecting these devices by deploying a “bolt-on” security gateway to these edge networks. The gateway applies security protections at the network level. While security gateways are an attractive solution, they raise a fundamental concern: Can the bolt-on security gateway be trusted? This paper identifies key challenges in realizing this goal and sketches a roadmap for providing trust in bolt-on edge IoT security gateways. Specifically, we show the promise of using a micro-hypervisor driven approach for delivering practical (deployable today) trust that is catered to both end-users and gateway vendors alike in terms of cost, generality, capabilities, and performance. We describe the challenges in establishing trust on today’s edge security gateways, formalize the adversary and trust properties, describe our system architecture, encode and prove our architecture trust properties using the Alloy formal modeling language. We foresee our trustworthy security gateway architecture becoming a practical and extensible formal foundation towards realizing robust trust properties on today’s edge security gateway implementations.

The dark web searching mechanism is unlike surface web searching. On one popular dark web, Tor dark web, the search is often directed by directory like services such as Hidden Wiki. The numerous dark web data collection mechanisms are discussed and implemented via crawling. The dark web crawler assumes seed link, i.e. hidden service from where the crawling begins. One such popular Tor directory service is Hidden Wiki. Most of the hidden services listed on the Hidden Wiki 2020 page became unreachable with the recent upgrade in the Tor version. The Hidden Wiki 2021 page has a limited listing of services compared to the Hidden Wiki 2020 page. This motivated authors of the present work to establish the role of Hidden wiki service in dark web research and proposed the hypothesis that the dark web could be reached better through customized harvested links than Hidden Wiki-like service. The work collects unique hidden services/ onion links using the opensource crawler TorBot and runs similarity analysis on collected pages to map to corresponding categories.

Performing an interaction using gaze and pinch has been certified as an efficient interactive method in Mixed Reality, for such techniques can provide users concise and natural experiences. However, executing a task with individual interactions gradually is inefficient in some application scenarios. In this paper, we propose the Hand-Pinch Menu, which core concept is to reduce unnecessary operations by combining several interactions. Users can continuously perform multiple interactions on a selected object concurrently without changing gestures by using this technique. The user study results show that our Gaze-Pinch Menu can improve operational efficiency effectively.
