The smart grid changes the way energy is produced and distributed. In addition both, energy and information is exchanged bidirectionally among participating parties. Therefore heterogeneous systems have to cooperate effectively in order to achieve a common high-level use case, such as smart metering for billing or demand response for load curtailment. Furthermore, a substantial amount of personal data is often needed for achieving that goal. Capturing and processing personal data in the smart grid increases customer concerns about privacy and in addition, certain statutory and operational requirements regarding privacy aware data processing and storage have to be met. An increase of privacy constraints, however, often limits the operational capabilities of the system. In this paper, we present an approach that automates the process of finding an optimal balance between privacy requirements and operational requirements in a smart grid use case and application scenario. This is achieved by formally describing use cases in an abstract model and by finding an algorithm that determines the optimum balance by forward mapping privacy and operational impacts. For this optimal balancing algorithm both, a numeric approximation and - if feasible - an analytic assessment are presented and investigated. The system is evaluated by applying the tool to a real-world use case from the University of Southern California (USC) microgrid.
To decouple the multi-axis motion in the 6 degrees of freedom magnetically levitated actuators (MLAs), this paper introduces a numerical method to model the force and torque distribution. Taking advantage of the Gaussian quadrature, the concept of coil node is developed to simplify the Lorentz integral into the summation of the interaction between each magnetic node in the remanence region and each coil node in the coil region. Utilizing the coordinate transformation in the numerical method, the computation burden is independent of the position and the rotation angle of the moving part. Finally, the experimental results prove that the force and torque predicted by the numerical model are rigidly consistent with the measurement, and the force and torque in all directions are decoupled properly based on the numerical solution. Compared with the harmonic model, the numerical wrench model is more suitable for the MLAs undertaking both the translational and rotational displacements.
Integrated cyber-physical systems (CPSs), such as the smart grid, are becoming the underpinning technology for major industries. A major concern regarding such systems are the seemingly unexpected large scale failures, which are often attributed to a small initial shock getting escalated due to intricate dependencies within and across the individual counterparts of the system. In this paper, we develop a novel interdependent system model to capture this phenomenon, also known as cascading failures. Our framework consists of two networks that have inherently different characteristics governing their intra-dependency: i) a cyber-network where a node is deemed to be functional as long as it belongs to the largest connected (i.e., giant) component; and ii) a physical network where nodes are given an initial flow and a capacity, and failure of a node results with redistribution of its flow to the remaining nodes, upon which further failures might take place due to overloading. Furthermore, it is assumed that these two networks are inter-dependent. For simplicity, we consider a one-to-one interdependency model where every node in the cyber-network is dependent upon and supports a single node in the physical network, and vice versa. We provide a thorough analysis of the dynamics of cascading failures in this interdependent system initiated with a random attack. The system robustness is quantified as the surviving fraction of nodes at the end of cascading failures, and is derived in terms of all network parameters involved. Analytic results are supported through an extensive numerical study. Among other things, these results demonstrate the ability of our model to capture the unexpected nature of large-scale failures, and provide insights on improving system robustness.
Due to the increasing concerns of securing private information, context-aware Internet of Things (IoT) applications are in dire need of supporting data privacy preservation for users. In the past years, game theory has been widely applied to design secure and privacy-preserving protocols for users to counter various attacks, and most of the existing work is based on a two-player game model, i.e., a user/defender-attacker game. In this paper, we consider a more practical scenario which involves three players: a user, an attacker, and a service provider, and such a complicated system renders any two-player model inapplicable. To capture the complex interactions between the service provider, the user, and the attacker, we propose a hierarchical two-layer three-player game framework. Finally, we carry out a comprehensive numerical study to validate our proposed game framework and theoretical analysis.
Various critical state models have been developed to understand the hysteresis loss mechanism of high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) films. The analytic relation between the hysteresis loss and the remanent field was obtained based on Bean's critical state model for thin films in the full-penetration case. Furthermore, numerical calculation of local hysteresis loops was carried out by Kim's critical state model. In this paper, we investigated local hysteresis losses for a GdBCO coated conductor by using low-temperature scanning Hall probe microscopy and reproduced the experimental results by applying the critical state model. Because of the demagnetizing effect in thin films, analysis of local hysteresis losses can be useful approach to understand of total hysteresis losses.
In this paper, we present an algorithm for estimating the state of the power grid following a cyber-physical attack. We assume that an adversary attacks an area by: (i) disconnecting some lines within that area (failed lines), and (ii) obstructing the information from within the area to reach the control center. Given the phase angles of the buses outside the attacked area under the AC power flow model (before and after the attack), the algorithm estimates the phase angles of the buses and detects the failed lines inside the attacked area. The novelty of our approach is the transformation of the line failures detection problem, which is combinatorial in nature, to a convex optimization problem. As a result, our algorithm can detect any number of line failures in a running time that is independent of the number of failures and is solely dependent on the size of the network. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first convex relaxation for the problem of line failures detection using phase angle measurements under the AC power flow model. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm in the IEEE 118- and 300-bus systems, and show that it estimates the phase angles of the buses with less that 1% error, and can detect the line failures with 80% accuracy for single, double, and triple line failures.
Application of trust principals in internet of things (IoT) has allowed to provide more trustworthy services among the corresponding stakeholders. The most common method of assessing trust in IoT applications is to estimate trust level of the end entities (entity-centric) relative to the trustor. In these systems, trust level of the data is assumed to be the same as the trust level of the data source. However, most of the IoT based systems are data centric and operate in dynamic environments, which need immediate actions without waiting for a trust report from end entities. We address this challenge by extending our previous proposals on trust establishment for entities based on their reputation, experience and knowledge, to trust estimation of data items [1-3]. First, we present a hybrid trust framework for evaluating both data trust and entity trust, which will be enhanced as a standardization for future data driven society. The modules including data trust metric extraction, data trust aggregation, evaluation and prediction are elaborated inside the proposed framework. Finally, a possible design model is described to implement the proposed ideas.
This paper presents the results of research and simulation of feature automated control of a hysteretic object and the difference between automated control and automatic control. The main feature of automatic control is in the fact that the control loop contains human being as a regulator with its limited response speed. The human reaction can be described as integrating link. The hysteretic object characteristic is switching from one state to another. This is followed by a transient process from one to another characteristic. For this reason, it is very difficult to keep the object in a desired state. Automatic operation ensures fast switching of the feedback signal that produces such a mode, which in many ways is similar to the sliding mode. In the sliding mode control signal abruptly switches from maximum to minimum and vice versa. The average value provides the necessary action to the object. Theoretical analysis and simulation show that the use of the maximum value of the control signal is not required. It is sufficient that the switching oscillation amplitude is such that the output signal varies with the movement of the object along both branches with hysteretic characteristics in the fastest cycle. The average output value in this case corresponds to the prescribed value of the control task. With automated control, the human response can be approximately modeled by integrating regulator. In this case the amplitude fluctuation could be excessively high and the frequency could be excessively low. The simulation showed that creating an artificial additional fluctuation in the control signal makes possible to provide a reduction in the amplitude and the resulting increase in the frequency of oscillation near to the prescribed value. This should be evaluated as a way to improve the quality of automated control with the helps of human being. The paper presents some practical examples of the examined method.
We study a quantity-flexibility supply contract between a manufacturer and a retailer in two periods. The retailer can get a low wholesale price within a fixed quantity and adjust the quantity at the end of the first period. The retailer can adjust the order quantities after the first period based on updated inventory status by paying a higher per-unit price for the incremental units or obtaining a buyback price per-unit for the returning units. By developing a two-period dynamic programming model in this paper, we first obtain an optimal replenishment strategy for the retailer when the manufacturer's price scheme is known. Then we derive an proper pricing scheme for the manufacturer by assuming that the supply chain is coordinated. The numerical results show some managerial insights by comparing this coordination scheme with Stackelberg game.
Since security is increasingly the principal concern in the conception and implementation of software systems, it is very important that the security mechanisms are designed so as to protect the computer systems against cyber attacks. An Intrusion Tolerance Systems play a crucial role in maintaining the service continuity and enhancing the security compared with the traditional security. In this paper, we propose to combine a preventive maintenance with existing intrusion tolerance system to improve the system security. We use a semi-Markov process to model the system behavior. We quantitatively analyze the system security using the measures such as system availability, Mean Time To Security Failure and cost. The numerical analysis is presented to show the feasibility of the proposed approach.
The power system forms the backbone of a modern society, and its security is of paramount importance to nation's economy. However, the power system is vulnerable to intelligent attacks by attackers who have enough knowledge of how the power system is operated, monitored and controlled. This paper proposes a game theoretic approach to explore and evaluate strategies for the defender to protect the power systems against such intelligent attacks. First, a risk assessment is presented to quantify the physical impacts inflicted by attacks. Based upon the results of the risk assessment, this paper represents the interactions between the attacker and the defender by extending the current zero-sum game model to more generalized game models for diverse assumptions concerning the attacker's motivation. The attacker and defender's equilibrium strategies are attained by solving these game models. In addition, a numerical illustration is demonstrated to warrant the theoretical outcomes.
Advanced persistent threat (APT) is becoming a major threat to cyber security. As APT attacks are often launched by well funded entities that are persistent and stealthy in achieving their goals, they are highly challenging to combat in a cost-effective way. The situation becomes even worse when a sophisticated attacker is further assisted by an insider with privileged access to the inside information. Although stealthy attacks and insider threats have been considered separately in previous works, the coupling of the two is not well understood. As both types of threats are incentive driven, game theory provides a proper tool to understand the fundamental tradeoffs involved. In this paper, we propose the first three-player attacker-defender-insider game to model the strategic interactions among the three parties. Our game extends the two-player FlipIt game model for stealthy takeover by introducing an insider that can trade information to the attacker for a profit. We characterize the subgame perfect equilibria of the game with the defender as the leader and the attacker and the insider as the followers, under two different information trading processes. We make various observations and discuss approaches for achieving more efficient defense in the face of both APT and insider threats.
