In many hostile military environments for instance war zone, unfriendly nature, etc., the systems perform on the specially promoted mode and nature which they tolerate the defined system network architecture. Preparation of Disruption-Tolerant systems (DTN) enhances the network between the remote devices which provided to the soldiers in the war zone, this situation conveys the reliable data transmission under scanner. Cipher text approach are based on the attribute based encryption which mainly acts on the attributes or role of the users, which is a successful cryptographic strategy to maintain the control issues and also allow reliable data transfer. Specially, the systems are not centralized and have more data constrained issues in the systems, implementing the Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE) was an important issue, where this strategy provides the new security and data protection approach with the help of the Key Revocation, Key Escrows and collaboration of the certain attributes with help of main Key Authorities. This paper mainly concentrates on the reliable data retrieval system with the help of CP-ABE for the Disruption-Tolerant Networks where multiple key authorities deal with respective attributes safely and securely. We performed comparison analysis on existing schemes with the recommended system components which are configured in the respective decentralized tolerant military system for reliable data retrieval.
This paper proposes a generic SATCOM control loop in a generic multivector structure to facilitate predictive analysis for achieving resiliency under time varying circumstances. The control loop provides strategies and actions in the context of game theory to optimize the resources for SATCOM networks. Details of the theoretic game and resources optimization approaches are discussed in the paper.
The main objective of this paper is to present a more secured and computationally efficient procedure of encrypting and decrypting images using the enigma algorithm in comparison to the existing methods. Available literature on image encryptions and descriptions are not highly secured in every case.To achieve more secured image processing for highly advanced technologies, a proposed algorithm can be the process used in enigma machine for image encryption and decryption. Enigma machine is piece of spook hardware that was used frequently during the World War II by the Germans. This paper describes the detailed algorithm along with proper demonstration of several essential components present in an enigma machine that is required for image security. Each pixel in a colorful picture can be represented by RGB (Red, Green, Blue) value. The range of RGB values is 0 to 255 that states the red, green and blue intensity of a particular picture.These RGB values are accessed one by one and changed into another by various steps and hence it is not possible to track the original RGB value. In order to retrieve the original image, the receiver needs to know the setting of the enigma. To compare the decrypted image with the original one,these two images are subtracted and their results are also discussed in this paper.
Military reconnaissance in 1999 has paved the way to establish its own, self-reliant and indigenous navigation system. The strategic necessity has been accomplished in 2013 by launching seven satellites in Geo-orbit and underlying Network control center in Bangalore and a new NavIC control center at Lucknow, later in 2016. ISTRAC is one of the premier and amenable center to track the Indian as well as external network satellite launch vehicle and provide house-keeping and inertial navigation (INC) data to launch control center in real time and to project team in off-line. Over the ISTRAC Launch network, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) was disabled due to security and bandwidth reasons. The cons of SNMP comprise security risks that are normal trait whenever applied as an open standard. There is "security through obscurity" linked with any slight-used communications standard in SNMP. Detailed messages are being sent between devices, not just miniature pre-set codes. These cons in the SNMP are found in majority applications and more bandwidth seizure is another contention. Due to the above pros and cones in SNMP in form of open source, available network monitoring system (NMS) could not be employed for link monitoring and immediate decision making in ISTRAC network. The situation has made requisitions to evolve an in-house network monitoring system (NMS). It was evolved for real-time network monitoring as well as communication link performance explication. The evolved system has the feature of Internet control message protocol (ICMP) based link monitoring, 24/7 monitoring of all the nodes, GUI based real-time link status, Summary and individual link statistics on the GUI. It also identifies total downtime and generates summary reports. It does identification for out of order or looped packets, Email and SMS alert to Prime and Redundant system which one is down and repeat alert if the link is failed for more than 30 minutes. It has easy file based configuration and no application restart required. Generation of daily and monthly link status, offline link analysis plot of any day, less consumption of system resources are add-on features. It is fully secured in-house development, calculates total data flow over a network and co-relate data vs link percentage.
The next generation military environment requires a delay-tolerant network for sharing data and resources using an interoperable computerized, Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a new distributed SDN (Software-Defined Networks) architecture for tactical environments based on distributed cloudlets. The objective is to reduce the end-to-end delay of tactical traffic flow, and improve management capabilities, allowing flexible control and network resource allocation. The proposed SDN architecture is implemented over three layers: decentralized cloudlets layer where each cloudlet has its SDRN (Software-Defined Radio Networking) controller, decentralized MEC (Mobile Edge Computing) layer with an SDN controller for each MEC, and a centralized private cloud as a trusted third-part authority controlled by a centralized SDN controller. The experimental validations are done via relevant and realistic tactical scenarios based on strategic traffics loads, i.e., Tactical SMS (Short Message Service), UVs (Unmanned Vehicle) patrol deployment and high bite rate ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) video.
Mobile military networks are uniquely challenging to build and maintain, because of their wireless nature and the unfriendliness of the environment, resulting in unreliable and capacity limited performance. Currently, most tactical networks implement TCP/IP, which was designed for fairly stable, infrastructure-based environments, and requires sophisticated and often application-specific extensions to address the challenges of the communication scenario. Information Centric Networking (ICN) is a clean slate networking approach that does not depend on stable connections to retrieve information and naturally provides support for node mobility and delay/disruption tolerant communications - as a result it is particularly interesting for tactical applications. However, despite ICN seems to offer some structural benefits for tactical environments over TCP/IP, a number of challenges including naming, security, performance tuning, etc., still need to be addressed for practical adoption. This document, prepared within NATO IST-161 RTG, evaluates the effectiveness of Named Data Networking (NDN), the de facto standard implementation of ICN, in the context of tactical edge networks and its potential for adoption.
In this paper, a novel game-theoretic framework is introduced to analyze and enhance the security of adversarial Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT) systems. In particular, a dynamic, psychological network interdiction game is formulated between a soldier and an attacker. In this game, the soldier seeks to find the optimal path to minimize the time needed to reach a destination, while maintaining a desired bit error rate (BER) performance by selectively communicating with certain IoBT devices. The attacker, on the other hand, seeks to find the optimal IoBT devices to attack, so as to maximize the BER of the soldier and hinder the soldier's progress. In this game, the soldier and attacker's first- order and second-order beliefs on each others' behavior are formulated to capture their psychological behavior. Using tools from psychological game theory, the soldier and attacker's intention to harm one another is captured in their utilities, based on their beliefs. A psychological forward induction-based solution is proposed to solve the dynamic game. This approach can find a psychological sequential equilibrium of the game, upon convergence. Simulation results show that, whenever the soldier explicitly intends to frustrate the attacker, the soldier's material payoff is increased by up to 15.6% compared to a traditional dynamic Bayesian game.
Recently, the armed forces want to bring the Internet of Things technology to improve the effectiveness of military operations in battlefield. So the Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT) has entered our view. And due to the high processing latency and low reliability of the “combat cloud” network for IoBT in the battlefield environment, in this paper , a novel “combat cloud-fog” network architecture for IoBT is proposed. The novel architecture adds a fog computing layer which consists of edge network equipment close to the users in the “combat-cloud” network to reduce latency and enhance reliability. Meanwhile, since the computing capability of the fog equipment are weak, it is necessary to implement distributed computing in the “combat cloud-fog” architecture. Therefore, the distributed computing load balancing problem of the fog computing layer is researched. Moreover, a distributed generalized diffusion strategy is proposed to decrease latency and enhance the stability and survivability of the “combat cloud-fog” network system. The simulation result indicates that the load balancing strategy based on generalized diffusion algorithm could decrease the task response latency and support the efficient processing of battlefield information effectively, which is suitable for the “combat cloud- fog” network architecture.
The Internet of things (IoT) is revolutionizing the management and control of automated systems leading to a paradigm shift in areas such as smart homes, smart cities, health care, transportation, etc. The IoT technology is also envisioned to play an important role in improving the effectiveness of military operations in battlefields. The interconnection of combat equipment and other battlefield resources for coordinated automated decisions is referred to as the Internet of battlefield things (IoBT). IoBT networks are significantly different from traditional IoT networks due to the battlefield specific challenges such as the absence of communication infrastructure, and the susceptibility of devices to cyber and physical attacks. The combat efficiency and coordinated decision-making in war scenarios depends highly on real-time data collection, which in turn relies on the connectivity of the network and the information dissemination in the presence of adversaries. This work aims to build the theoretical foundations of designing secure and reconfigurable IoBT networks. Leveraging the theories of stochastic geometry and mathematical epidemiology, we develop an integrated framework to study the communication of mission-critical data among different types of network devices and consequently design the network in a cost effective manner.
In this paper, the problem of misinformation propagation is studied for an Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT) system in which an attacker seeks to inject false information in the IoBT nodes in order to compromise the IoBT operations. In the considered model, each IoBT node seeks to counter the misinformation attack by finding the optimal probability of accepting a given information that minimizes its cost at each time instant. The cost is expressed in terms of the quality of information received as well as the infection cost. The problem is formulated as a mean-field game with multiclass agents which is suitable to model a massive heterogeneous IoBT system. For this game, the mean-field equilibrium is characterized, and an algorithm based on the forward backward sweep method is proposed to find the mean-field equilibrium. Then, the finite IoBT case is considered, and the conditions of convergence of the equilibria in the finite case to the mean-field equilibrium are presented. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme can achieve a 1.2-fold increase in the quality of information (QoI) compared to a baseline scheme in which the IoBT nodes are always transmitting. The results also show that the proposed scheme can reduce the proportion of infected nodes by 99% compared to the baseline.

In this paper, the problem of network connectivity is studied for an adversarial Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT) system in which an attacker aims at disrupting the connectivity of the network by choosing to compromise one of the IoBT nodes at each time epoch. To counter such attacks, an IoBT defender attempts to reestablish the IoBT connectivity by either deploying new IoBT nodes or by changing the roles of existing nodes. This problem is formulated as a dynamic multistage Stackelberg connectivity game that extends classical connectivity games and that explicitly takes into account the characteristics and requirements of the IoBT network. In particular, the defender's payoff captures the IoBT latency as well as the sum of weights of disconnected nodes at each stage of the game. Due to the dependence of the attacker's and defender's actions at each stage of the game on the network state, the feedback Stackelberg solution [feedback Stackelberg equilibrium (FSE)] is used to solve the IoBT connectivity game. Then, sufficient conditions under which the IoBT system will remain connected, when the FSE solution is used, are determined analytically. Numerical results show that the expected number of disconnected sensors, when the FSE solution is used, decreases up to 46% compared to a baseline scenario in which a Stackelberg game with no feedback is used, and up to 43% compared to a baseline equal probability policy.
Tactical MANETs are deployed in several challenging situations such as node mobility, presence of radio interference together with malicious jamming attacks, and execrable terrain features etc. Jamming attacks are especially harmful to the reliability of wireless communication, as they can effectively disrupt communication between any node pairs. The nature of Tactical MANETs hinders ineffective most of existing reliable routing schemes for ordinary wireless mobile networks. Routing Protocols in Tactical MANET s face serious security and reliability challenges. Selecting a long lasting and steady-going route is a critical task. Due to the lack of accurate acquisition and evaluation of the transmission characteristics, routing algorithms may result in continual reconstruction and high control overhead. This paper studies the impact of jamming and interference on the common protocols of tactical communications and presents a neighbor dependency-based reliable routing algorithm. According to the neighbor dependency based on channel state information evaluated by Exponential Smoothing Method, how to select a neighboring node as the next hop will greatly affect the transmission reliability. Finally, the performance of the reliable routing protocol based on neighbor dependency is tested in OPNET, and compared with the classical AODV algorithm and the improved AODV based on link Cost (CAODV) algorithm. The simulation results show that the protocol presented in this paper has better data transmission reliability.
Tactical wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are deployed over a region of interest for mission centric operations. The sink node in a tactical WSN is the aggregation point of data processing. Due to its essential role in the network, the sink node is a high priority target for an attacker who wishes to disable a tactical WSN. This paper focuses on the mitigation of sink-node vulnerability in a tactical WSN. Specifically, we study the issue of protecting the sink node through a technique known as k-anonymity. To achieve k-anonymity, we use a specific routing protocol designed to work within the constraints of WSN communication protocols, specifically IEEE 802.15.4. We use and modify the Lightweight Ad hoc On-Demand Next Generation (LOADng) reactive-routing protocol to achieve anonymity. This modified LOADng protocol prevents an attacker from identifying the sink node without adding significant complexity to the regular sensor nodes. We simulate the modified LOADng protocol using a custom-designed simulator in MATLAB. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our protocol and also show some of the performance tradeoffs that come with this method.
Tactical networks are generally simple ad-hoc networks in design, however, this simple design often gets complicated, when heterogeneous wireless technologies have to work together to enable seamless multi-hop communications across multiple sessions. In recent years, there has been some significant advances in computational, radio, localization, and networking te, and session's rate i.e., aggregate capacity averaged over a 4-time-slot frame)chnologies, which motivate a clean slate design of the control plane for multi-hop tactical wireless networks. In this paper, we develop a global network optimization framework, which characterizes the control plane for multi-hop wireless tactical networks. This framework abstracts the underlying complexity of tactical wireless networks and orchestrates the the control plane functions. Specifically, we develop a cross-layer optimization framework, which characterizes the interaction between the physical, link, and network layers. By applying the framework to a throughput maximization problem, we show how the proposed framework can be utilized to solve a broad range of wireless multi-hop tactical networking problems.
Ensuring security in the military applications of IoT is a big challenge. The main reasons for this state of affairs is that the sensor nodes of the network are usually mobile, use wireless links, have a small processing power and have a little energy resources. The paper presents the solution for cryptographic protection of transmission between sensor nodes in the data link layer and for cryptographic protection of data stored in the sensor node resources. For this purpose, the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) was used. The proposed solution makes it possible to build secure and fault tolerant sensor network. The following aspects were presented in the paper: the model of such a network, applied security solutions, analysis of the security in the network and selected investigation results of such a network were presented.
MANET is an infrastructure less, dynamic, decentralised network. Any node can join the network and leave the network at any point of time. Due to its simplicity and flexibility, it is widely used in military communication, emergency communication, academic purpose and mobile conferencing. In MANET there no infrastructure hence each node acts as a host and router. They are connected to each other by Peer-to-peer network. Decentralised means there is nothing like client and server. Each and every node is acted like a client and a server. Due to the dynamic nature of mobile Ad-HOC network it is more vulnerable to attack. Since any node can join or leave the network without any permission the security issues are more challenging than other type of network. One of the major security problems in ad hoc networks called the black hole problem. It occurs when a malicious node referred as black hole joins the network. The black hole conducts its malicious behavior during the process of route discovery. For any received RREQ, the black hole claims having route and propagates a faked RREP. The source node responds to these faked RREPs and sends its data through the received routes once the data is received by the black hole; it is dropped instead of being sent to the desired destination. This paper discusses some of the techniques put forwarded by researchers to detect and prevent Black hole attack in MANET using AODV protocol and based on their flaws a new methodology also have been proposed.
Tactical communication networks lack infrastructure and are highly dynamic, resource-constrained, and commonly targeted by adversaries. Designing efficient and secure applications for this environment is extremely challenging. An increasing reliance on group-oriented, tactical applications such as chat, situational awareness, and real-time video has generated renewed interest in IP multicast delivery. However, a lack of developer tools, software libraries, and standard paradigms to achieve secure and reliable multicast impedes the potential of group-oriented communication and often leads to inefficient communication models. In this paper, we propose an architecture for secure and reliable group-oriented communication. The architecture utilizes NSA Suite B cryptography and may be appropriate for handling sensitive and DoD classified data up to SECRET. Our proposed architecture is unique in that it requires no infrastructure, follows NSA CSfC guidance for layered security, and leverages NORM for multicast data reliability. We introduce each component of the architecture and describe a Linux-based software prototype.
In this paper, we propose techniques for combating source selective jamming attacks in tactical cognitive MANETs. Secure, reliable and seamless communications are important for facilitating tactical operations. Selective jamming attacks pose a serious security threat to the operations of wireless tactical MANETs since selective strategies possess the potential to completely isolate a portion of the network from other nodes without giving a clear indication of a problem. Our proposed mitigation techniques use the concept of address manipulation, which differ from other techniques presented in open literature since our techniques employ de-central architecture rather than a centralized framework and our proposed techniques do not require any extra overhead. Experimental results show that the proposed techniques enable communications in the presence of source selective jamming attacks. When the presence of a source selective jammer blocks transmissions completely, implementing a proposed flipped address mechanism increases the expected number of required transmission attempts only by one in such scenario. The probability that our second approach, random address assignment, fails to solve the correct source MAC address can be as small as 10-7 when using accurate parameter selection.
In military operation or emergency response situations, very frequently a commander will need to assemble and dynamically manage Community of Interest (COI) mobile groups to achieve a critical mission assigned despite failure, disconnection or compromise of COI members. We combine the designs of COI hierarchical management for scalability and reconfigurability with COI dynamic trust management for survivability and intrusion tolerance to compose a scalable, reconfigurable, and survivable COI management protocol for managing COI mission-oriented mobile groups in heterogeneous mobile environments. A COI mobile group in this environment would consist of heterogeneous mobile entities such as communication-device-carried personnel/robots and aerial or ground vehicles operated by humans exhibiting not only quality of service (QoS) characters, e.g., competence and cooperativeness, but also social behaviors, e.g., connectivity, intimacy and honesty. A COI commander or a subtask leader must measure trust with both social and QoS cognition depending on mission task characteristics and/or trustee properties to ensure successful mission execution. In this paper, we present a dynamic hierarchical trust management protocol that can learn from past experiences and adapt to changing environment conditions, e.g., increasing misbehaving node population, evolving hostility and node density, etc. to enhance agility and maximize application performance. With trust-based misbehaving node detection as an application, we demonstrate how our proposed COI trust management protocol is resilient to node failure, disconnection and capture events, and can help maximize application performance in terms of minimizing false negatives and positives in the presence of mobile nodes exhibiting vastly distinct QoS and social behaviors.
