We present a collected overview on how to assess both the accuracy and reliability levels and relate them to the required effort, for different digital methods of synchronizing clocks. The presented process is intended for end users who require time synchronization but are not certain about how to judge at least one of the aspects. It can not only be used on existing technologies but should also be transferable to many future approaches. We further relate this approach to several examples. We discuss in detail the approach of medium-range White Rabbit connections over dedicated fibers, a method that occupies an extreme corner in the evaluation, where the effort is exceedingly high, but also yields excellent accuracy and significant reliability.

Nakamura, Ryo, Kamiyama, Noriaki.  2021.  Proposal of Keyword-Based Information-Centric Delay-Tolerant Network. 2021 IEEE International Workshop Technical Committee on Communications Quality and Reliability (CQR 2021). :1–7.
In this paper, we focus on Information-Centric Delay-Tolerant Network (ICDTN), which incorporates the communication paradigm of Information-Centric Networking (ICN) into Delay-Tolerant Networking (DTN). Conventional ICNs adopt a naming scheme that names the content with the content identifier. However, a past study proposed an alternative naming scheme that describes the name of content with the content descriptor. We believe that, in ICDTN, it is more suitable to utilize the approach using the content descriptor. In this paper, we therefore propose keyword-based ICDTN that resolves content requests and deliveries contents based on keywords, i.e., content descriptor, in the request and response messages.

The router's buffer size imposes significant impli-cations on the performance of the network. Network operators nowadays configure the router's buffer size manually and stati-cally. They typically configure large buffers that fill up and never go empty, increasing the Round-trip Time (RTT) of packets significantly and decreasing the application performance. Few works in the literature dynamically adjust the buffer size, but are implemented only in simulators, and therefore cannot be tested and deployed in production networks with real traffic. Previous work suggested setting the buffer size to the Bandwidth-delay Product (BDP) divided by the square root of the number of long flows. Such formula is adequate when the RTT and the number of long flows are known in advance. This paper proposes a system that leverages programmable switches as passive instruments to measure the RTT and count the number of flows traversing a legacy router. Based on the measurements, the programmable switch dynamically adjusts the buffer size of the legacy router in order to mitigate the unnecessary large queuing delays. Results show that when the buffer is adjusted dynamically, the RTT, the loss rate, and the fairness among long flows are enhanced. Additionally, the Flow Completion Time (FCT) of short flows sharing the queue is greatly improved. The system can be adopted in campus, enterprise, and service provider networks, without the need to replace legacy routers.

With the rise of the so-called Adversarial Attacks, there is an increased concern on model security. In this paper we present two different contributions: novel measures of robustness (based on adversarial attacks) and a novel adversarial attack. The key idea behind these metrics is to obtain a measure that could compare different architectures, with independence of how the input is preprocessed (robustness against different input sizes and value ranges). To do so, a novel adversarial attack is presented, performing a delayed elastic-net adversarial attack (constraints are only used whenever a successful adversarial attack is obtained). Experimental results show that our approach obtains state-of-the-art adversarial samples, in terms of minimal perturbation distance. Finally, a benchmark of ImageNet pretrained models is used to conduct experiments aiming to shed some light about which model should be selected whenever security is a role factor.

The security of integrated circuits (IC) plays a very significant role on military, economy, communication and other industries. Due to the globalization of the integrated circuit (IC) from design to manufacturing process, the IC chip is vulnerable to be implanted malicious circuit, which is known as hardware Trojan (HT). When the HT is activated, it will modify the functionality, reduce the reliability of IC, and even leak confidential information about the system and seriously threatens national security. The HT detection theory and method is hotspot in the security of integrated circuit. However, most methods are focusing on the simulated data. Moreover, the measurement data of the real circuit are greatly affected by the measurement noise and process disturbances and few methods are available with small size of the Trojan circuit. In this paper, the problem of detection was cast as signal representation among multiple linear regression and sparse representation-based classifier (SRC) were first applied for Trojan detection. We assume that the training samples from a single class do lie on a subspace, and the test samples can be represented by the single class. The proposed SRC HT detection method on real integrated circuit shows high accuracy and efficiency.

Ebrahimian, Mahsa, Kashef, Rasha.  2020.  Efficient Detection of Shilling’s Attacks in Collaborative Filtering Recommendation Systems Using Deep Learning Models. 2020 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM). :460–464.
Recommendation systems, especially collaborative filtering recommenders, are vulnerable to shilling attacks as some profit-driven users may inject fake profiles into the system to alter recommendation outputs. Current shilling attack detection methods are mostly based on feature extraction techniques. The hand-designed features can confine the model to specific domains or datasets while deep learning techniques enable us to derive deeper level features, enhance detection performance, and generalize the solution on various datasets and domains. This paper illustrates the application of two deep learning methods to detect shilling attacks. We conducted experiments on the MovieLens 100K and Netflix Dataset with different levels of attacks and types. Experimental results show that deep learning models can achieve an accuracy of up to 99%.

Yang, Yang, Wang, Ruchuan.  2020.  LBS-based location privacy protection mechanism in augmented reality. 2020 International Conference on Internet of Things and Intelligent Applications (ITIA). :1—6.
With the development of augmented reality(AR) technology and location-based service (LBS) technology, combining AR with LBS will create a new way of life and socializing. In AR, users may consider the privacy and security of data. In LBS, the leakage of user location privacy is an important threat to LBS users. Therefore, it is very important for privacy management of positioning information and user location privacy to avoid loopholes and abuse. In this review, the concepts and principles of AR technology and LBS would be introduced. The existing privacy measurement and privacy protection framework would be analyzed and summarized. Also future research direction of location privacy protection would be discussed.

Wheelus, C., Bou-Harb, E., Zhu, X..  2018.  Tackling Class Imbalance in Cyber Security Datasets. 2018 IEEE International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration (IRI). :229–232.
It is clear that cyber-attacks are a danger that must be addressed with great resolve, as they threaten the information infrastructure upon which we all depend. Many studies have been published expressing varying levels of success with machine learning approaches to combating cyber-attacks, but many modern studies still focus on training and evaluating with very outdated datasets containing old attacks that are no longer a threat, and also lack data on new attacks. Recent datasets like UNSW-NB15 and SANTA have been produced to address this problem. Even so, these modern datasets suffer from class imbalance, which reduces the efficacy of predictive models trained using these datasets. Herein we evaluate several pre-processing methods for addressing the class imbalance problem; using several of the most popular machine learning algorithms and a variant of UNSW-NB15 based upon the attributes from the SANTA dataset.

Address clustering tries to construct the one-to-many mapping from entities to addresses in the Bitcoin system. Simple heuristics based on the micro-structure of transactions have proved very effective in practice. In this paper we describe the primary reasons behind this effectiveness: address reuse, avoidable merging, super-clusters with high centrality,, the incremental growth of address clusters. We quantify their impact during Bitcoin's first seven years of existence.

Yihai Zhu, Jun Yan, Yufei Tang, Yan Sun, Haibo He.  2014.  The sequential attack against power grid networks. Communications (ICC), 2014 IEEE International Conference on. :616-621.

The vulnerability analysis is vital for safely running power grids. The simultaneous attack, which applies multiple failures simultaneously, does not consider the time domain in applying failures, and is limited to find unknown vulnerabilities of power grid networks. In this paper, we discover a new attack scenario, called the sequential attack, in which the failures of multiple network components (i.e., links/nodes) occur at different time. The sequence of such failures can be carefully arranged by attackers in order to maximize attack performances. This attack scenario leads to a new angle to analyze and discover vulnerabilities of grid networks. The IEEE 39 bus system is adopted as test benchmark to compare the proposed attack scenario with the existing simultaneous attack scenario. New vulnerabilities are found. For example, the sequential failure of two links, e.g., links 26 and 39 in the test benchmark, can cause 80% power loss, whereas the simultaneous failure of them causes less than 10% power loss. In addition, the sequential attack is demonstrated to be statistically stronger than the simultaneous attack. Finally, several metrics are compared and discussed in terms of whether they can be used to sharply reduce the search space for identifying strong sequential attacks.
