In this work, we propose a novel approach for the detection of sybil attacks in C-ITS environments. We provide an evaluation of our approach using extensive simulations that rely on real traces, showing our detection approach's effectiveness.

In this paper, we compare the performance of two routing protocols: Ad-hoc on Demand Distance Vector protocol (AODV) and Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector protocol (DSDV) in VANETs. We measure the reliability of each protocol in the packet delivery.

To ensure traffic safety and proper operation of vehicular networks, safety messages or beacons are periodically broadcasted in Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANETs) to neighboring nodes and road side units (RSU). Thus, authenticity and integrity of received messages along with the trust in source nodes is crucial and highly required in applications where a failure can result in life-threatening situations. Several digital signature based approaches have been described in literature to achieve the authenticity of these messages. In these schemes, scenarios having high level of vehicle density are handled by RSU where aggregated signature verification is done. However, most of these schemes are centralized and PKI based where our goal is to develop a decentralized dynamic system. Along with authenticity and integrity, trust management plays an important role in VANETs which enables ways for secure and verified communication. A number of trust management models have been proposed but it is still an ongoing matter of interest, similarly authentication which is a vital security service to have during communication is not mostly present in the literature work related to trust management systems. This paper proposes a secure and publicly verifiable communication scheme for VANET which achieves source authentication, message authentication, non repudiation, integrity and public verifiability. All of these are achieved through digital signatures, Hash Message Authentication Code (HMAC) technique and logging mechanism which is aided by blockchain technology.

Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) are one of the most stochastic networks in terms of node movement patterns. Due to the high speed of vehicles, nodes form temporary clusters and shift between clusters rapidly, which limits the usable computational complexity for quality of service (QoS) and security enhancements. Hence, VANETs are one of the most insecure networks and are prone to various attacks like Masquerading, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) etc. Various algorithms have been proposed to safeguard VANETs against these attacks, which vary concerning security and QoS performance. These algorithms include linear rule-checking models, software-defined network (SDN) rules, blockchain-based models, etc. Due to such a wide variety of model availability, it becomes difficult for VANET designers to select the most optimum security framework for the network deployment. To reduce the complexity of this selection, the paper reviews statistically investigate a wide variety of modern VANET-based security models. These models are compared in terms of security, computational complexity, application and cost of deployment, etc. which will assist network designers to select the most optimum models for their application. Moreover, the paper also recommends various improvements that can be applied to the reviewed models, to further optimize their performance.

Vehicular networks have been considered as a hopeful technology to enhance road safety, which is a crossing area of Internet of Things (IoT) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Current Internet architecture using the TCP/IP model and based on host-to-host is limited when it comes to vehicular communications which are characterized by high speed and dynamic topology. Thus, using Named Data Networking (NDN) in connected vehicles may tackle the issues faced with the TCP/IP model. In this paper, we investigate the security concerns of applying NDN in vehicular environments and discuss the remaining challenges in order to guide researchers in this field to choose their future research direction.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) is a pervasive network, where vehicles communicate with nearby vehicles and infrastructure nodes, such as Road-side unit (RSU). Information sharing among vehicles is an essential component of an intelligent transportation system (ITS), but security and privacy concerns must be taken into consideration. Security of the network can be improved by granting access only to authenticated vehicles and restricting or revoking access for vehicles involved in misbehavior. In this paper, we present a novel blockchain based approach to authenticate vehicles and notify other vehicles about any unauthorized messages in real time. This helps protect other vehicles in the network from making critical decisions based on false or inaccurate information. In the proposed architecture, vehicles communicate with each other using pseudonyms or pseudo IDs and the Blockchain is used to securely maintain the real identity of all vehicles, which can be linked to the pseudo IDs if needed. The goal is to protect privacy or individual vehicles, while still ensuring accountability in case of misbehavior. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated for different vehicle and attacker densities, and results demonstrate it has lower authentication delay and communication overhead compared to existing approaches.

Recently, vehicular communications have been the focus of industry, research and development fields. There are many benefits of vehicular communications. It improves traffic management and put derivers in better control of their vehicles. Privacy and security protection are collective accountability in which all parties need to actively engage and collaborate to afford safe and secure communication environments. The primary objective of this paper is to exploit the RSS characteristic of physical layer, in order to generate a secret key that can securely be exchanged between legitimated communication vehicles. In this paper, secret key extraction from wireless channel will be the main focus of the countermeasures against VANET security attacks. The technique produces a high rate of bits stream while drop less amount of information. Information reconciliation is then used to remove dissimilarity of two initially extracted keys, to increase the uncertainty associated to the extracted bits. Five values are defined as quantization thresholds for the captured probes. These values are derived statistically, adaptively and randomly according to the readings obtained from the received signal strength.

Today we live in a hyper-connected world, where a large amount of applications and services are supported by ad hoc networks. They have a decentralized management, are flexible and versatile but their characteristics are in turn their main weaknesses. This work introduces a preliminary analysis of the evolution, trends and the state of the art in the context of the security in ad hoc networks. To this end, two different methodologies are applied: a bibliometric analysis and a Systematic Literature Review. Results show that security in MANETs and VANETs are still an appealing research field. In addition, we realized that there is no clear separation of solutions by line of defense. This is because they are sometimes misclassified by the authors or simply there is no line of defense that totally fit well with the proposed solution. Because of that, new taxonomies including novel definitions of lines of defense are needed. In this work, we propose the use of tolerant or survivable solutions which are the ones that preserve critical system or network services in presence of fault, malfunctions or attacks.

A vehicular Ad-hoc network (VANET) allows groups of autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles to share information and content with each other and infrastructure. Named Data Networking (NDN) is recently proposed as one of the future internet architectures, which allows communication in network-based upon content name. It has originated from Information-centric networking (ICN). NDN-based VANET uses NDN as an underlying communication paradigm. NDN-based VANET suffers from several security attacks, one such attack is the Interest Flooding Attack (IFA) that targets the core forwarding mechanism of NDN-based VANET. This paper focuses on the detection and mitigation of IFA in NDN-based VANET. We proposed a method FIFA to detect and mitigate IFA. Our proposed method is capable of detecting normal IFA as well as a low-rate IFA. Along with that FIFA also ensures non-repudiation in networks. We have compared our proposed method with the existing mechanism to detect and mitigate IFA named IFAMS. Experiment results show that our method detects and mitigates normal IFA and low-rate IFA in the network.

The development of autonomous connected vehicles, in particular, moving as a platoon formation, has received great attention in recent years. The autonomous movement allows to increase the efficiency of the transportation infrastructure usage, reduce the fuel consumption, improve road safety, decrease traffic congestion, and others. To maintain an optimal spacing policy in a platoon formation, it is necessary to exchange information between vehicles. The Vehicular ad hoc Network (VANET) is the key component to establish wireless vehicle-to-vehicle communications. However, vehicular communications can be affected by different security threats. In this paper, we consider the third-order consensus approach as a control strategy for the vehicle platoon. We investigate several types of malicious attacks (spoofing, message falsification) and propose an anomaly detection algorithm that allows us to detect the malicious vehicle and enhance the security of the vehicle platoon. The experimental study of the proposed approach is conducted using Plexe, a vehicular network simulator that permits the realistic simulation of platooning systems.

Trust estimation of vehicles is vital for the correct functioning of Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) as it enhances their security by identifying reliable vehicles. However, accurate trust estimation still remains distant as existing works do not consider all malicious features of vehicles, such as dropping or delaying packets, altering content, and injecting false information. Moreover, data consistency of messages is not guaranteed here as they pass through multiple paths and can easily be altered by malicious relay vehicles. This leads to difficulty in measuring the effect of content tampering in trust calculation. Further, unreliable wireless communication of VANETs and unpredictable vehicle behavior may introduce uncertainty in the trust estimation and hence its accuracy. In this view, we put forward three trust factors - captured by fuzzy sets to adequately model malicious properties of a vehicle and apply a fuzzy logic-based algorithm to estimate its trust. We also introduce a parameter to evaluate the impact of content modification in trust calculation. Experimental results reveal that the proposed scheme detects malicious vehicles with high precision and recall and makes decisions with higher accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art.

In this paper, we propose a multidimensional trust model for vehicular networks. Our model evaluates the trustworthiness of each vehicle using two main modes: 1) Direct Trust Computation DTC related to a direct connection between source and target nodes, 2) Indirect Trust Computation ITC related to indirectly communication between source and target nodes. The principal characteristics of this model are flexibility and high fault tolerance, thanks to an automatic trust scores assessment. In our extensive simulations, we use Total Cost Rate to affirm the performance of the proposed trust model.

Smart substation and Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) are two important applications of aggregate signature scheme. Due to the large number of data collection equipment in substation, it needs security authentication and integrity protection to transmit data. Similarly, in VANET, due to limited resources, it has the needs of privacy protection and improving computing efficiency. Aggregate signature scheme can satisfy the above these needs and realize one-time verification of signature for multi-terminal data collection which can improve the performance. Aggregate signature scheme is an important technology to solve network security problem. Recently, many aggregate signature schemes are proposed which can be applied in smart grid or VANET. In this paper, we present two security analyses on two aggregate signature schemes proposed recently. By analysis, it shows that the two aggregate signature schemes do not satisfy the security property of unforgeability. A malicious user can forge a signature on any message. We also present some improved methods to solve these security problems with better performance. From security analysis to improvement of aggregate signature scheme, it is very suitable to be an instance to exhibit the students on designing of security aggregate signature scheme for network security education or course.

The Ad-hoc vehicle networks (VANETs) recently stressed communications and networking technologies. VANETs vary from MANETs in tasks, obstacles, system architecture and operation. Smart vehicles and RSUs communicate through unsafe wireless media. By nature, they are vulnerable to threats that can lead to life-threatening circumstances. Due to potentially bad impacts, security measures are needed to recognize these VANET assaults. In this review paper of VANET security, the new VANET approaches are summarized by addressing security complexities. Second, we're reviewing these possible threats and literature recognition mechanisms. Finally, the attacks and their effects are identified and clarified and the responses addressed together.

Most applications of Internet of Vehicles (IoVs) rely on collaboration between nodes. Therefore, false information flow in-between these nodes poses the challenging trust issue in rapidly moving IoV nodes. To resolve this issue, a number of mechanisms have been proposed in the literature for the detection of false information and establishment of trust in IoVs, most of which employ reputation scores as one of the important factors. However, it is critical to have a robust and consistent scheme that is suitable to aggregate a reputation score for each node based on the accuracy of the shared information. Such a mechanism has therefore been proposed in this paper. The proposed system utilises the results of any false message detection method to generate and share feedback in the network, this feedback is then collected and filtered to remove potentially malicious feedback in order to produce a dynamic reputation score for each node. The reputation system has been experimentally validated and proved to have high accuracy in the detection of malicious nodes sending false information and is robust or negligibly affected in the presence of spurious feedback.

Recently, several cross-layer protocols have been designed for vehicular networks to optimize data dissemination by ensuring internal communications between routing and MAC layers. In this context, a cross-layer protocol, called TDMA-aware Routing Protocol for Multi-hop communications (TRPM), was proposed in order to efficiently select a relay node based on time slot scheduling information obtained from the MAC layer. However, due to the constant evolution of cyber-attacks on the routing and MAC layers, data dissemination in vehicular networks is vulnerable to several types of attack. In this paper, we identify the different attack models that can disrupt the cross-layer operation of the TRPM protocol and assess their impact on performance through simulation. Several new vulnerabilities related to the MAC slot scheduling process are identified. Exploiting of these vulnerabilities would lead to severe channel capacity wastage where up to half of the free slots could not be reserved.

These networks need several security requirements, such as anonymity, data authentication, confidentiality, traceability and cancellation of offending users, unlinkability, integrity, undeniability and access control. Authentication of the data and sender are most important security requirements in these networks. So many authentication schemes have been proposed up to now. One of the well-known techniques to provide users authentication in these networks is the authentication based on the smartcard (ASC). In this paper, we propose an ASC scheme that not only provides necessary security requirements such as anonymity, traceability and unlinkability in the VANETs but also is more efficient than the other schemes in the literatures.

Wireless technology is widely used today and is growing rapidly. One of the wireless technologies is VANET where the network can communicate with vehicles (V2V) which can prevent accidents on the road. Energy is also a problem in VANET so it needs to be used efficiently. The presence of malicious nodes or nodes can eliminate and disrupt the process of data communication. The routing protocol used in this study is AODV. The purpose of this study is to analyze the comparison of blackhole attack and flooding attack against energy-efficient AODV on VANET. This research uses simulation methods and several supporting programs such as OpenStreetMap, SUMO, NS2, NAM, and AWK to test the AODV routing protocol. Quality of service (QOS) parameters used in this study are throughput, packet loss, and end to end delay. Energy parameters are also used to examine the energy efficiency used. This study uses the number of variations of nodes consisting of 20 nodes, 40 nodes, 60 nodes, and different network conditions, namely normal network conditions, network conditions with black hole attacks, and network conditions with flooding attacks. The results obtained can be concluded that the highest value of throughput when network conditions are normal, the greatest value of packet loss when there is a black hole attack, the highest end to end delay value and the largest remaining energy when there is a flooding attack.

Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANETs) ensures road safety by communicating with a set of smart vehicles. VANET is a subset of Mobile Adhoc Networks (MANETs). VANET enabled vehicles helps in establishing communication services among one another or with the Road Side Unit (RSU). Information transmitted in VANET is distributed in an open access environment and hence security is one of the most critical issues related to VANET. Although each vehicle is not a source of all communications, most contact depends on the information that other vehicles receive from it. That vehicle must be able to assess, determine and respond locally on the information obtained from other vehicles to protect VANET from malicious act. Of this reason, message verification in VANET is more difficult due to the protection and privacy issues of the participating vehicles. To overcome security threats, we propose Monitoring Algorithm that detects malicious nodes based on the pre-selected threshold value. The threshold value is compared with the distrust value which is inherently tagged with each vehicle. The proposed Monitoring Algorithm not only detects malicious vehicles, but also isolates the malicious vehicles from the network. The proposed technique is simulated using Network Simulator2 (NS2) tool. The simulation result illustrated that the proposed Monitoring Algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of malicious node detection, network delay, packet delivery ratio and throughput, thereby uplifting the overall performance of the network.

There are many nodes in VANET and to avoid the load on every node, clustering is applied in VANET. VANET possess the high dynamic network having continuous changing in the topology. For stability of network, a good clustering algorithm is required for enhancing the network productivity. In proposed work, a novel approach has been proposed to make cluster in VANET network and detect malicious node of network for security network.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) is a promising technology for autonomous driving as it provides many benefits and user conveniences to improve road safety and driving comfort. Sybil attack is one of the most serious threats in vehicular communications because attackers can generate multiple forged identities to disseminate false messages to disrupt safety-related services or misuse the systems. To address this issue, we propose a Sybil attack detection scheme using ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistant System) sensors installed on modern passenger vehicles, without the assistance of trusted third party authorities or infrastructure. Also, a deep learning based object detection technique is used to accurately identify nearby objects for Sybil attack detection and the multi-step verification process minimizes the false positive of the detection.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) have a strategic goal to achieve service delivery in roads and smart cities, considering the integration and communication between vehicles, sensors and fixed road-side components (routers, gateways and services). VANETs have singular characteristics such as fast mobile nodes, self-organization, distributed network and frequently changing topology. Despite the recent evolution of VANETs, security, data integrity and users privacy information are major concerns, since attacks prevention is still open issue. One of the most dangerous attacks in VANETs is the Sybil, which forges false identities in the network to disrupt compromise the communication between the network nodes. Sybil attacks affect the service delivery related to road safety, traffic congestion, multimedia entertainment and others. Thus, VANETs claim for security mechanism to prevent Sybil attacks. Within this context, this paper proposes a mechanism, called SyDVELM, to detect Sybil attacks in VANETs based on artificial intelligence techniques. The SyDVELM mechanism uses Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) with occasional features of vehicular nodes, minimizing the identification time, maximizing the detection accuracy and improving the scalability. The results suggest that the suitability of SyDVELM mechanism to mitigate Sybil attacks and to maintain the service delivery in VANETs.

The idea behind collective perception is to improve vehicles' awareness about their surroundings. Every vehicle shares information describing its perceived environment by means of V2X communication. Similar to other information shared using V2X communication, collective perception information is potentially safety relevant, which means there is a need to assess the reliability and quality of received information before further processing. Transmitted information may have been forged by attackers or contain inconsistencies e.g. caused by malfunctions. This paper introduces a novel approach for estimating a belief that a pair of entities, e.g. two remote vehicles or the host vehicle and a remote vehicle, within a Vehicular ad hoc Network (VANET) are both trustworthy. The method updates the belief based on the consistency of the data that both entities provide. The evaluation shows that the proposed method is able to identify forged information.

VANET is an emerging technology incorporating ad hoc network to accomplish intelligent communications between vehicles, improvement in road traffic efficiency and safety. In some situations movement of vehicles is in a certain range, over particular distance or just in a specific tendency. Such a network can be called as incompletely or partially predictable network. An efficient use of such network, position and motion of nodes as well as relative history in big data is an open issue in vehicular ad hoc network. A hybrid protocol which provides secure and trustworthiness evaluation based routing can be used in VANET. Here Secure Trustworthiness Evaluation Based Routing Protocol is implemented using NS2 software. Its performance is very good in terms of the Average End to End Delay, Packet Delivery Ratio and Normalized Routing Overhead.
