Visible to the public CPS: Synergy: Tracking Fish Movement with a School of Gliding Robotic Fish

Abstract:

The goal of this project is to create an integrative framework for the design of coupled biological and robotic systems that accommodates system uncertainties and competing objectives in a rigorous, holistic, and effective manner. The design principles are developed using a concrete, end-to-end application of tracking and modeling fish movement with a network of gliding robotic fish based on acoustic telemetry.

Visible to the public Computationally Aware Cyber-Physical Systems

Abstract:

This poster summarizes our recently awarded grant on computationally aware cyber-physical systems (CPSs). The objective of this project is to generate new fundamental science for CPSs that enables more accurate and faster trajectory synthesis for controllers with nonlinear plants, or nonlinear constraints that encode obstacles. The approach is to utilize hybrid control to switch between models whose accuracy is normalized by their computational burden.

Visible to the public Safety-Feature Modeling and Adaptive Resource Management for Mixed-Criticality Cyber-Physical Systems

Abstract:

This project is concerned with ensuring operational safety of complex cyber-physical systems such as automobiles, aircraft, and medical devices. Modern development techniques for such systems rely on independent implementation of safety features in software and subsequent integration of these features within system platform architectures. The current trend in developing these systems, driven by the need to reduce cost and energy consumption, is to share computational resources between different features.

Visible to the public Managing Uncertainty in the Design of Safety-Critical Aviation Systems

Abstract:

The objective of this research is to create tools to manage uncertainty in the design and certification process of safety-critical aviation systems. The research focuses on three innovative ideas to support this objective. First, probabilistic techniques will be introduced to specify system-level requirements and bound the performance of dynamical components.

Visible to the public Efficient Mapping and Management of Applications onto Cyber-Physical Systems

Abstract:

The computing landscape is a richly-heterogeneous space including both fixed and mobile nodes with a large variety of sensing, actuation and computational capabilities (including mobile devices, home electronics, taxis, robotic drones, etc.). Cyber-physical applications built on these devices have the potential to gather data on, analyze, and adapt to or control a range of environments.

Visible to the public Cybernetic Interfaces for the Restoration of Human Movement through Functional Electrical Stimulation

Abstract:

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a promising technology for activating muscles in spinal cord injured (SCI) patients. The objective of our project was to develop an intuitive user interface and control system that allows high-level tetraplegic patients to regain the use of their own arm.

Visible to the public CPS: Breakthrough: From Whole-Hand Tactile Imaging to Interactive Simulation

Abstract:

This project aims to enable cyber-physical systems that can be worn on the body in order to one day allow their users to touch, feel, and manipulate computationally simulated three-dimensional objects or digital data in physically realistic ways, using the whole hand. It will do this by precisely measuring touch and movement-induced displacements of the skin in the hand, and by reproducing these signals interactively, via new technologies to be developed in the project.

Visible to the public CPS: Breakthrough: Secure Telerobotics

Abstract:

Telerobotic systems are cyber-physical systems where human operators and robots exchange information using a combination of publicly available communication networks and temporary ad-hoc wireless and satellite networks.
