The intelligent cyber-physical system (CPS) has been applied in various fields, covering multiple critical infras-tructures and human daily life support areas. CPS Security is a major concern and of critical importance, especially the security of the intelligent control component. Side-channel analysis (SCA) is the common threat exploiting the weaknesses in system operation to extract information of the intelligent CPS. However, existing literature lacks the systematic theo-retical analysis of the side-channel attacks on the intelligent CPS, without the ability to quantify and measure the leaked information. To address these issues, we propose the SCA-based model extraction attack on intelligent CPS. First, we design an efficient and novel SCA-based model extraction framework, including the threat model, hierarchical attack process, and the multiple micro-space parallel search enabled weight extraction algorithm. Secondly, an information theory-empowered analy-sis model for side-channel attacks on intelligent CPS is built. We propose a mutual information-based quantification method and derive the capacity of side-channel attacks on intelligent CPS, formulating the amount of information leakage through side channels. Thirdly, we develop the theoretical bounds of the leaked information over multiple attack queries based on the data processing inequality and properties of entropy. These convergence bounds provide theoretical means to estimate the amount of information leaked. Finally, experimental evaluation, including real-world experiments, demonstrates the effective-ness of the proposed SCA-based model extraction algorithm and the information theory-based analysis method in intelligent CPS.

With the rapid growth of online services, the number of online accounts proliferates. The security of a single user account no longer depends merely on its own service provider but also the accounts on other service platforms (We refer to this online account environment as Online Account Ecosystem). In this paper, we first uncover the vulnerability of Online Account Ecosystem, which stems from the defective multi-factor authentication (MFA), specifically the ones with SMS-based verification, and dependencies among accounts on different platforms. We propose Chain Reaction Attack that exploits the weakest point in Online Account Ecosystem and can ultimately compromise the most secure platform. Furthermore, we design and implement ActFort, a systematic approach to detect the vulnerability of Online Account Ecosystem by analyzing the authentication credential factors and sensitive personal information as well as evaluating the dependency relationships among online accounts. We evaluate our system on hundreds of representative online services listed in Alexa in diversified fields. Based on the analysis from ActFort, we provide several pragmatic insights into the current Online Account Ecosystem and propose several feasible countermeasures including the online account exposed information protection mechanism and the built-in authentication to fortify the security of Online Account Ecosystem.

Ali, Ahtasham, Al-Perumal, Sundresan.  2021.  Source Code Analysis for Mobile Applications for Privacy Leaks. 2021 IEEE Madras Section Conference (MASCON). :1—6.
Intelligent gadgets for example smartphones, tablet phones, and personal digital assistants play an increasingly important part in our lives and have become indispensable in our everyday routines. As a result, the market for mobile apps tends to grow at a rapid rate, and mobile app utilization has long eclipsed that of desktop software. The applications based on these smartphones are becoming vulnerable due to the use of open-source operating systems in these smart devices. These applications are vulnerable to smartphones because of memory leaks; they can steal personal data, hack our smartphones, and monitor our private activity, giving anyone significant financial loss. Because of these issues, smartphone security plays a vital role in our daily lives. The Play Store contains unrated applications which any unprofessional developer can develop, and these applications do not pass through the rigorous process of testing and analysis of code leaks. The existing developed system does not include a stringent procedure to examine and investigate source code to detect such vulnerabilities among mobile applications. This paper presented a dynamic analysis-based robust system for Source Code Analysis of Mobile Applications for Privacy Leaks using a machine learning algorithm. Furthermore, our framework is called Source Code Analysis of Mobile Applications (SCA-MA), which combines DynaLog and our machine learning-based classifier for Source Code Analysis of Mobile Applications. Our dataset will contain around 20000 applications to test and analyze vulnerabilities. We will perform dynamic analysis and separate the classification of vulnerable applications and safe applications. Our results show that we can detect vulnerabilities through our proposed system while reviewing code and provide better results than other existing frameworks. We have evaluated our large dataset with the pervasive way so we can detect even small privacy leak which can harm our app. Finally, we have compared results with existing methods, and framework performance is better than other methods.

Matsumoto, Marin, Oguchi, Masato.  2021.  Speeding Up Encryption on IoT Devices Using Homomorphic Encryption. 2021 IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP). :270–275.
What do we need to do to protect our personal information? IoT devices such as smartphones, smart watches, and home appliances are widespread. Encryption is required not only to prevent eavesdropping on communications but also to prevent information leakage from cloud services due to unauthorized access. Therefore, attention is being paid to fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) that allows addition and multiplication between ciphertexts. However, FHE with this convenient function has a drawback that the encryption requires huge volume of calculation and the ciphertext is large. Therefore, if FHE is used on a device with limited computational resources such as an IoT device, the load on the IoT device will be too heavy. In this research, we propose a system that can safely and effectively utilize data without imposing a load on IoT devices. In this system, somewhat homomorphic encryption (SHE), which is a lightweight cryptosystem compared with FHE, is combined with FHE. The results of the experiment confirmed that the load on the IoT device can be reduced to approximately 1/1400 compared to load of the system from previous research.
Başer, Melike, Güven, Ebu Yusuf, Aydın, Muhammed Ali.  2021.  SSH and Telnet Protocols Attack Analysis Using Honeypot Technique: Analysis of SSH AND ℡NET Honeypot. 2021 6th International Conference on Computer Science and Engineering (UBMK). :806–811.
Generally, the defense measures taken against new cyber-attack methods are insufficient for cybersecurity risk management. Contrary to classical attack methods, the existence of undiscovered attack types called’ zero-day attacks’ can invalidate the actions taken. It is possible with honeypot systems to implement new security measures by recording the attacker’s behavior. The purpose of the honeypot is to learn about the methods and tools used by the attacker or malicious activity. In particular, it allows us to discover zero-day attack types and develop new defense methods for them. Attackers have made protocols such as SSH (Secure Shell) and Telnet, which are widely used for remote access to devices, primary targets. In this study, SSHTelnet honeypot was established using Cowrie software. Attackers attempted to connect, and attackers record their activity after providing access. These collected attacker log records and files uploaded to the system are published on Github to other researchers1. We shared the observations and analysis results of attacks on SSH and Telnet protocols with honeypot.
Sethi, Tanmay, Mathew, Rejo.  2021.  A Study on Advancement in Honeypot based Network Security Model. 2021 Third International Conference on Intelligent Communication Technologies and Virtual Mobile Networks (ICICV). :94–97.
Throughout the years, honeypots have been very useful in tracking down attackers and preventing different types of cyber attacks on a very large scale. It's been almost 3 decades since the discover of honeypots and still more than 80% of the companies rely on this system because of intrusion detection features and low false positive rate. But with time, the attackers tend to start discovering loopholes in the system. Hence it is very important to be up to date with the technology when it comes to protecting a computing device from the emerging cyber attacks. Timely advancements in the security model provided by the honeypots helps in a more efficient use of the resource and also leads to better innovations in that field. The following paper reviews different methods of honeypot network and also gives an insight about the problems that those techniques can face along with their solution. Further it also gives the detail about the most preferred solution among all of the listed techniques in the paper.
Hoarau, Kevin, Tournoux, Pierre Ugo, Razafindralambo, Tahiry.  2021.  Suitability of Graph Representation for BGP Anomaly Detection. 2021 IEEE 46th Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN). :305–310.
The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is in charge of the route exchange at the Internet scale. Anomalies in BGP can have several causes (mis-configuration, outage and attacks). These anomalies are classified into large or small scale anomalies. Machine learning models are used to analyze and detect anomalies from the complex data extracted from BGP behavior. Two types of data representation can be used inside the machine learning models: a graph representation of the network (graph features) or a statistical computation on the data (statistical features). In this paper, we evaluate and compare the accuracy of machine learning models using graph features and statistical features on both large and small scale BGP anomalies. We show that statistical features have better accuracy for large scale anomalies, and graph features increase the detection accuracy by 15% for small scale anomalies and are well suited for BGP small scale anomaly detection.

Smart grid (SG) network is one of the recently improved networks of tangled entities, objects, and smart metering infrastructure (SMI). It plays a vital part in sensing, acquiring, observing, aggregating, controlling, and dealing with various kinds of fields in SG. The SMI or advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is proposed to make available a real-time transmissions connection among users and services are Time of use (TOU), Real time pricing (RTP), Critical Peak Pricing (CPP). In adding to, additional benefit of SMs is which are capable to report back to the service control center in near real time nontechnical losses (for instance, tampering with meters, bypassing meters, and illicit tapping into distribution systems). SMI supports two-way transmission meters reading electrical utilization at superior frequency. This data is treated in real time and signals send to manage demand. This paper expresses a transitory impression of cyberattack instances in customary energy networks and SMI. This paper presents cyber security attacks and countermeasures in Smart Grid Metering Network (SGMN). Based on the existing survey threat models, a number of proposed ways have been planned to deal with all threats in the formulation of the secrecy and privacy necessities of SG measurement network.

The rapid advancement of IoT technologies has led to its flexible adoption in battle field networks, known as Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT) networks. One important application of IoBT networks is the weather sensory network characterized with a variety of weather, land and environmental sensors. This data contains hidden trends and correlations, needed to provide situational awareness to soldiers and commanders. To interpret the incoming data in real-time, machine learning algorithms are required to automate strategic decision-making. Existing solutions are not well-equipped to provide the fine-grained feedback to military personnel and cannot facilitate a scalable, end-to-end platform for fast unlabeled data collection, cleaning, querying, analysis and threats identification. In this work, we present a scalable end-to-end IoBT data driven platform for SVAD (Storage, Visualization, Anomaly Detection) analysis of heterogeneous weather sensor data. Our SVAD platform includes extensive data cleaning techniques to denoise efficiently data to differentiate data from anomalies and noise data instances. We perform comparative analysis of unsupervised machine learning algorithms for multi-variant data analysis and experimental evaluation of different data ingestion pipelines to show the ability of the SVAD platform for (near) real-time processing. Our results indicate impending turbulent weather conditions that can be detected by early anomaly identification and detection techniques.

A tamper-resistant logical operation method based on integrated nanophotonics is proposed focusing on electromagnetic side-channel attacks. In the proposed method, only the phase of each optical signal is modulated depending on its logical state, which keeps the power of optical signals in optical logic circuits constant. This provides logic-gate-level tamper resistance which is difficult to achieve with CMOS circuits. An optical implementation method based on electronically-controlled phase shifters is then proposed. The electrical part of proposed circuits achieves 300 times less instantaneous current change, which is proportional to intensity of the leaked electromagnetic wave, than a CMOS logic gate.

With the rapid development of smart grid, the data generated by grid services are growing rapidly, and the requirements for time delay are becoming more and more stringent. The storage and computing capacity of the existing terminal equipment can not meet the needs of high bandwidth and low delay of the system at the same time. Fortunately, mobile edge computing (MEC) can provide users with nearby storage and computing services at the network edge, this can give an option to simultaneously meet the requirement of high bandwidth and low delay. Aiming at the problem of service offload scheduling in edge computing, this paper proposes a delay optimized task offload algorithm based on task priority classification. Firstly, the priority of power grid services is divided by using analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and the processing efficiency and quality of service of emergency tasks are guaranteed by giving higher weight coefficients to delay constraints and security levels. Secondly, the service is initialized and unloaded according to the task preprocessing time. Finally, the reasonable subchannel allocation is carried out based on the task priority design decision method. Simulation results show that compared with the traditional approaches, our algorithm can effectively improve the overall system revenue and reduce the average user task delay.

Zhao, Junyi, Tang, Tao, Bu, Bing, Li, Qichang.  2021.  A Three-dimension Resilience State Space-based Approach to Resilience Assessment of CBTC system. 2021 IEEE International Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference (ITSC). :3673—3678.
Traditional passive defense methods cannot resist the constantly updated and evolving cyber attacks. The concept of resilience is introducing to measure the ability of the system to maintain its function under attack. It matters in evaluating the security of modern industrial systems. This paper presents a 3D Resilience State Space method to assess Communication-based train control (CBTC) system resilience under malware attack. We model the spread of malware as two functions: the communicability function \$f\$(x) and the susceptibility function 9 (x). We describe the characteristics of these two function in the CBTC complex network by using the percolation theory. Then we use a perturbation formalism to analyze the impact of malware attack on information flow and use it as an indicator of the cyber layer state. The CBTC cyber-physical system resilience metric formalizes as the system state transitions in three-dimensional state space. The three dimensions respectively represent the cyber layer state, the physical layer state, and the transmission layer state. The simulation results reveal that the proposed framework can effectively assess the resilience of the CBTC system. And the anti-malware programs can prevent the spread of malware and improve CBTC system resilience.

Khan, Maher, Babay, Amy.  2021.  Toward Intrusion Tolerance as a Service: Confidentiality in Partially Cloud-Based BFT Systems. 2021 51st Annual IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN). :14–25.
Recent work on intrusion-tolerance has shown that resilience to sophisticated network attacks requires system replicas to be deployed across at least three geographically distributed sites. While commodity data centers offer an attractive solution for hosting these sites due to low cost and management overhead, their use raises significant confidentiality concerns: system operators may not want private data or proprietary algorithms exposed to servers outside their direct control. We present a new model for Byzantine Fault Tolerant replicated systems that moves toward “intrusion tolerance as a service”. Under this model, application logic and data are only exposed to servers hosted on the system operator's premises. Additional offsite servers hosted in data centers can support the needed resilience without executing application logic or accessing unencrypted state. We have implemented this approach in the open-source Spire system, and our evaluation shows that the performance overhead of providing confidentiality can be less than 4% in terms of latency.

Aftab, Muhammad Usman, Hussain, Mehdi, Lindgren, Anders, Ghafoor, Abdul.  2021.  Towards A Distributed Ledger Based Verifiable Trusted Protocol For VANET. 2021 International Conference on Digital Futures and Transformative Technologies (ICoDT2). :1—6.
To ensure traffic safety and proper operation of vehicular networks, safety messages or beacons are periodically broadcasted in Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANETs) to neighboring nodes and road side units (RSU). Thus, authenticity and integrity of received messages along with the trust in source nodes is crucial and highly required in applications where a failure can result in life-threatening situations. Several digital signature based approaches have been described in literature to achieve the authenticity of these messages. In these schemes, scenarios having high level of vehicle density are handled by RSU where aggregated signature verification is done. However, most of these schemes are centralized and PKI based where our goal is to develop a decentralized dynamic system. Along with authenticity and integrity, trust management plays an important role in VANETs which enables ways for secure and verified communication. A number of trust management models have been proposed but it is still an ongoing matter of interest, similarly authentication which is a vital security service to have during communication is not mostly present in the literature work related to trust management systems. This paper proposes a secure and publicly verifiable communication scheme for VANET which achieves source authentication, message authentication, non repudiation, integrity and public verifiability. All of these are achieved through digital signatures, Hash Message Authentication Code (HMAC) technique and logging mechanism which is aided by blockchain technology.

Smart products, such as toy robots, must comply with multiple legal requirements of the countries they are sold and used in. Currently, compliance with the legal environment requires manually customizing products for different markets. In this paper, we explore a design approach for smart products that enforces compliance with aspects of the European Union’s data protection principles within a product’s firmware through a toy robot case study. To this end, we present an exchange between computer scientists and legal scholars that identified the relevant data flows, their processing needs, and the implementation decisions that could allow a device to operate while complying with the EU data protection law. By designing a data-minimizing toy robot, we show that the variety, amount, and quality of data that is exposed, processed, and stored outside a user’s premises can be considerably reduced while preserving the device’s functionality. In comparison with a robot designed using a traditional approach, in which 90% of the collected types of information are stored by the data controller or a remote service, our proposed design leads to the mandatory exposure of only 7 out of 15 collected types of information, all of which are legally required by the data controller to demonstrate consent. Moreover, our design is aligned with the Data Privacy Vocabulary, which enables the toy robot to cross geographic borders and seamlessly adjust its data processing activities to the local regulations.

In this paper we propose to combine the safe C dialect Checked C with concolic testing to obtain an effective methodology for attaining safer C code. Checked C is a modern and backward compatible extension to the C programming language which provides facilities for writing memory-safe C code. We utilize incremental conversions of unsafe C software to Checked C. After each increment, we leverage concolic testing, an effective test generation technique, to support the conversion process by searching for newly introduced and existing bugs. Our RISC-V experiments using the RIOT Operating System (OS) demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. We uncovered 4 previously unknown bugs and 3 bugs accidentally introduced through our conversion process.

Learning movement control is a fundamental process integral to infant development. However, it is still unclear how infants learn to control leg movement. This work explores the potential of using socially assistive robots to provide real-time adaptive reinforcement learning for infants. Ten 6 to 8-month old typically-developing infants participated in a study where a robot provided reinforcement when the infant’s right leg acceleration fell within the range of 9 to 20 m/s2. If infants increased the proportion of leg accelerations in this band, they were categorized as "performers". Six of the ten participating infants were categorized as performers; the performer subgroup increased the magnitude of acceleration, proportion of target acceleration for right leg, and ratio of right/left leg acceleration peaks within the target acceleration band and their right legs increased movement intensity from the baseline to the contingency session. The results showed infants specifically adjusted their right leg acceleration in response to a robot- provided reward. Further study is needed to understand how to improve human-robot interaction policies for personalized interventions for young infants.

Husa, Eric, Tourani, Reza.  2021.  Vibe: An Implicit Two-Factor Authentication using Vibration Signals. 2021 IEEE Conference on Communications and Network Security (CNS). :236—244.
The increased need for online account security and the prominence of smartphones in today’s society has led to smartphone-based two-factor authentication schemes, in which the second factor is a code received on the user’s smartphone. Evolving two-factor authentication mechanisms suggest using the proximity of the user’s devices as the second authentication factor, avoiding the inconvenience of user-device interaction. These mechanisms often use low-range communication technologies or the similarities of devices’ environments to prove devices’ proximity and user authenticity. However, such mechanisms are vulnerable to colocated adversaries. This paper proposes Vibe-an implicit two-factor authentication mechanism, which uses a vibration communication channel to prove users’ authenticity in a secure and non-intrusive manner. Vibe’s design provides security at the physical layer, reducing the attack surface to the physical surface shared between devices. As a result, it protects users’ security even in the presence of co-located adversaries-the primary drawback of the existing systems. We prototyped Vibe and assessed its performance using commodity hardware in different environments. Our results show an equal error rate of 0.0175 with an end-to-end authentication latency of approximately 3.86 seconds.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) data privacy protection during sharing, aggregating, and publishing is a challenging problem. Several privacy protection mechanisms have been developed in the literature to protect sensitive data from adversarial analysis and eliminate the risk of re-identifying the original properties of shared data. However, most of the existing solutions have drawbacks, such as (i) lack of a proper vulnerability characterization model to accurately identify where privacy is needed, (ii) ignoring data providers privacy preference, (iii) using uniform privacy protection which may create inadequate privacy for some provider while over-protecting others, and (iv) lack of a comprehensive privacy quantification model assuring data privacy-preservation. To address these issues, we propose a personalized privacy preference framework by characterizing and quantifying the CPS vulnerabilities as well as ensuring privacy. First, we introduce a Standard Vulnerability Profiling Library (SVPL) by arranging the nodes of an energy-CPS from maximum to minimum vulnerable based on their privacy loss. Based on this model, we present our personalized privacy framework (PDP) in which Laplace noise is added based on the individual node's selected privacy preferences. Finally, combining these two proposed methods, we demonstrate that our privacy characterization and quantification model can attain better privacy preservation by eliminating the trade-off between privacy, utility, and risk of losing information.

Security is a major thing to focus on during this modern era as it is very important to secure your surroundings for the well being of oneself and his family, But there are many drawbacks of using conventional security surveillance cameras as they have to be set in a particular angle for good visual and they do not cover a large area, conventional security cameras can only be used from a particular device and cannot alert the user during an unforeseen circumstance. Hence we require a much more efficient device for better security a web controlled surveillance robot is much more practical device to be used compared to conventional security surveillance, this system needs a single camera to perform its operation and the user can monitor a wide range of area, any device with a wireless connection to the internet can be used to operate this device. This robot can move to any location within the range of the network and can be accessed globally from anywhere and as it uses only one camera to secure a large area it is also cost-efficient. At the core of the system lies Raspberry-pi which is responsible for all the operation of the system and the size of the device can be engineered according to the area it is to be used.

The Robot Operation System (ROS) is widely used in academia as well as the industry to build custom robot applications. Successful cyberattacks on robots can result in a loss of control for the legitimate operator and thus have a severe impact on safety if the robot is moving uncontrollably. A high level of security thus needs to be mandatory. Neither ROS 1 nor 2 in their default configuration provide protection against network based attackers. Multiple protection mechanisms have been proposed that can be used to overcome this. Unfortunately, it is unclear how effective and usable each of them are. We provide a structured analysis of the requirements these protection mechanisms need to fulfill by identifying realistic, network based attacker models and using those to derive relevant security requirements and other evaluation criteria. Based on these criteria, we analyze the protection mechanisms available and compare them to each other. We find that none of the existing protection mechanisms fulfill all of the security requirements. For both ROS 1 and 2, we discuss which protection mechanism are most relevant and give hints on how to decide on one. We hope that the requirements we identify simplify the development or enhancement of protection mechanisms that cover all aspects of ROS and that our comparison helps robot operators to choose an adequate protection mechanism for their use case.

Halabi, Talal.  2021.  Adaptive Security Risk Mitigation in Edge Computing: Randomized Defense Meets Prospect Theory. 2021 IEEE/ACM Symposium on Edge Computing (SEC). :432–437.

Edge computing supports the deployment of ubiquitous, smart services by providing computing and storage closer to terminal devices. However, ensuring the full security and privacy of computations performed at the edge is challenging due to resource limitation. This paper responds to this challenge and proposes an adaptive approach to defense randomization among the edge data centers via a stochastic game, whose solution corresponds to the optimal security deployment at the network's edge. Moreover, security risk is evaluated subjectively based on Prospect Theory to reflect realistic scenarios where the attacker and the edge system do not similarly perceive the status of the infrastructure. The results show that a non-deterministic defense policy yields better security compared to a static defense strategy.

We present a novel approach for the collaborative training of neural network models in decentralized federated environments. In the iterative process a group of autonomous peers run multiple training rounds to train a common model. Thereby, participants perform all model training steps locally, such as stochastic gradient descent optimization, using their private, e.g. mission-critical, training datasets. Based on locally updated models, participants can jointly determine a common model by averaging all associated model weights without sharing the actual weight values. For this purpose we introduce a simple n-out-of-n secret sharing schema and an algorithm to calculate average values in a peer-to-peer manner. Our experimental results with deep neural networks on well-known sample datasets prove the generic applicability of the approach, with regard to model quality parameters. Since there is no need to involve a central service provider in model training, the approach can help establish trustworthy collaboration platforms for businesses with high security and data protection requirements.
