Boolean Microgrid
Abstract:
Advances in power semiconductor devices have rapidly paved the way for high-frequency power electronics to the point that high-frequency distributed power systems (HFDPSs) - such as Boolean Microgrid - are increasingly becoming a practical reality, provided the effects of transmission-line length can be mitigated. However, the usage of HFDPSs has been primarily limited to the printed-circuit-board (PCB) level applications because of the transmission-line effect that a power signal encounters as it propagates through the transmission line . In the past, adjusting the transmission-line length or using active compensation has been pursued as a possible remedy for addressing the transmission-line effects. While approach to adjusting the transmission-line length is primarily limited to PCB-level implementations, active compensation leads to high expense and complexity of the HFDPS. In this poster, we provide a frequency-selection criterion for a Boolean Microgrid HFDPS, feeding linear load(s), which can mitigate transmission-line effect under periodic condition and can facilitate HF power transfer for long transmission-line lengths. Selection of such an optimum transmission frequency is of critical importance while designing a HFDPS; otherwise, it can lead to the deterioration of voltage and current flowing in the network, rupture the transmission-line insulation, and can also lead to increased losses in the network owing to the transmission-line effect. The applicability of the mechanism along with analyses has been explored for single-input-single-output (SISO), single-input-multiple-output (SIMO), and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) Boolean Microgrid HFDPS topologies. Validations of the analyses have been carried out using simulation and a proof-of-concept experimental setup.
