In this study, it is aimed to reduce False-Alarm levels and increase the correct detection rate in order to reduce this uncertainty. Within the scope of the study, 13157 SQLi and XSS type malicious and 10000 normal HTTP Requests were used. All HTTP requests were received from the same web server, and it was observed that normal requests and malicious requests were close to each other. In this study, a novel approach is presented via both digitization and expressing the data with words in the data preprocessing stages. LSTM, MLP, CNN, GNB, SVM, KNN, DT, RF algorithms were used for classification and the results were evaluated with accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score metrics. As a contribution of this study, we can clearly express the following inferences. Each payload even if it seems different which has the same impact maybe that we can clearly view after the preprocessing phase. After preprocessing we are calculating euclidean distances which brings and gives us the relativity between expressions. When we put this relativity as an entry data to machine learning and/or deep learning models, perhaps we can understand the benign request or the attack vector difference.

Lei, L., Chen, M., He, C., Li, D..  2020.  XSS Detection Technology Based on LSTM-Attention. 2020 5th International Conference on Control, Robotics and Cybernetics (CRC). :175—180.
Cross-site scripting (XSS) is one of the main threats of Web applications, which has great harm. How to effectively detect and defend against XSS attacks has become more and more important. Due to the malicious obfuscation of attack codes and the gradual increase in number, the traditional XSS detection methods have some defects such as poor recognition of malicious attack codes, inadequate feature extraction and low efficiency. Therefore, we present a novel approach to detect XSS attacks based on the attention mechanism of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network. First of all, the data need to be preprocessed, we used decoding technology to restore the XSS codes to the unencoded state for improving the readability of the code, then we used word2vec to extract XSS payload features and map them to feature vectors. And then, we improved the LSTM model by adding attention mechanism, the LSTM-Attention detection model was designed to train and test the data. We used the ability of LSTM model to extract context-related features for deep learning, the added attention mechanism made the model extract more effective features. Finally, we used the classifier to classify the abstract features. Experimental results show that the proposed XSS detection model based on LSTM-Attention achieves a precision rate of 99.3% and a recall rate of 98.2% in the actually collected dataset. Compared with traditional machine learning methods and other deep learning methods, this method can more effectively identify XSS attacks.

Patel, Keyur.  2019.  A Survey on Vulnerability Assessment Penetration Testing for Secure Communication. 2019 3rd International Conference on Trends in Electronics and Informatics (ICOEI). :320–325.
As the technology is growing rapidly, the development of systems and software are becoming more complex. For this reason, the security of software and web applications become more vulnerable. In the last two decades, the use of internet application and security hacking activities are on top of the glance. The organizations are having the biggest challenge that how to secure their web applications from the rapidly increasing cyber threats because the organization can't compromise the security of their sensitive information. Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing techniques may help organizations to find security loopholes. The weakness can be the asset for the attacker if the organizations are not aware of this. Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing helps an organization to cover the security loopholes and determine their security arrangements are working as per defined policies or not. To cover the tracks and mitigate the threats it is necessary to install security patches. This paper includes the survey on the current vulnerabilities, determination of those vulnerabilities, the methodology used for determination, tools used to determine the vulnerabilities to secure the organizations from cyber threat.

Cross-site scripting (XSS) is a scripting attack targeting web applications by injecting malicious scripts into web pages. Blind XSS is a subset of stored XSS, where an attacker blindly deploys malicious payloads in web pages that are stored in a persistent manner on target servers. Most of the XSS detection techniques used to detect the XSS vulnerabilities are inadequate to detect blind XSS attacks. In this research, we present machine learning based approach to detect blind XSS attacks. Testing results help to identify malicious payloads that are likely to get stored in databases through web applications.

Integrating security testing into the workflow of software developers not only can save resources for separate security testing but also reduce the cost of fixing security vulnerabilities by detecting them early in the development cycle. We present an automatic testing approach to detect a common type of Cross Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability caused by improper encoding of untrusted data. We automatically extract encoding functions used in a web application to sanitize untrusted inputs and then evaluate their effectiveness by automatically generating XSS attack strings. Our evaluations show that this technique can detect 0-day XSS vulnerabilities that cannot be found by static analysis tools. We will also show that our approach can efficiently cover a common type of XSS vulnerability. This approach can be generalized to test for input validation against other types injections such as command line injection.

Cross site scripting (XSS) is a kind of common attack nowadays. The attack patterns with the new technical like HTML5 that makes detection task getting harder and harder. In this paper, we focus on the browser detection mechanism integrated with HTML5 and CORS properties to detect XSS attacks with the rule based filter by using browser extensions. Further, we also present a model of composition pattern estimation system which can be used to judge whether the intercepted request has malicious attempts or not. The experimental results show that our approach can reach high detection rate by tuning our system through some frequently used attack sentences and testing it with the popular tool-kits: XSSer developed by OWASP.

In last twenty years, use of internet applications, web hacking activities have exaggerated speedily. Organizations facing very significant challenges in securing their web applications from rising cyber threats, as compromise with the protection issues don't seem to be reasonable. Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT) techniques help them to go looking out security loopholes. These security loopholes could also be utilized by attackers to launch attacks on technical assets. Thus it is necessary ascertain these vulnerabilities and install security patches. VAPT helps organization to determine whether their security arrangements are working properly. This paper aims to elucidate overview and various techniques used in vulnerability assessment and penetration testing (VAPT). Also focuses on making cyber security awareness and its importance at various level of an organization for adoption of required up to date security measures by the organization to stay protected from various cyber-attacks.

Chaudhary, P., Gupta, B. B., Yamaguchi, S..  2016.  XSS detection with automatic view isolation on online social network. 2016 IEEE 5th Global Conference on Consumer Electronics. :1–5.

Online Social Networks (OSNs) are continuously suffering from the negative impact of Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities. This paper describes a novel framework for mitigating XSS attack on OSN-based platforms. It is completely based on the request authentication and view isolation approach. It detects XSS attack through validating string value extracted from the vulnerable checkpoint present in the web page by implementing string examination algorithm with the help of XSS attack vector repository. Any similarity (i.e. string is not validated) indicates the presence of malicious code injected by the attacker and finally it removes the script code to mitigate XSS attack. To assess the defending ability of our designed model, we have tested it on OSN-based web application i.e. Humhub. The experimental results revealed that our model discovers the XSS attack vectors with low false negatives and false positive rate tolerable performance overhead.

With the growth of the Internet, web applications are becoming very popular in the user communities. However, the presence of security vulnerabilities in the source code of these applications is raising cyber crime rate rapidly. It is required to detect and mitigate these vulnerabilities before their exploitation in the execution environment. Recently, Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) and Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CWE) reported Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) as one of the most serious vulnerabilities in the web applications. Though many vulnerability detection approaches have been proposed in the past, existing detection approaches have the limitations in terms of false positive and false negative results. This paper proposes a context-sensitive approach based on static taint analysis and pattern matching techniques to detect and mitigate the XSS vulnerabilities in the source code of web applications. The proposed approach has been implemented in a prototype tool and evaluated on a public data set of 9408 samples. Experimental results show that proposed approach based tool outperforms over existing popular open source tools in the detection of XSS vulnerabilities.
