Physical layer (PHY) security in decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems is discussed. Based on the types of wiretap links, the secrecy performance of three typical secure DF relay models is analyzed. Different from conventional works in this field, rigorous derivations of the secrecy channel capacity are provided from an information-theoretic perspective. Meanwhile, closed-form expressions are derived to characterize the secrecy outage probability (SOP). For the sake of unveiling more system insights, asymptotic analyses are performed on the SOP for a sufficiently large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The analytical results are validated by computer simulations and are in excellent agreement.

Compare to outside threats, insider threats that originate within targeted systems are more destructive and invisible. More importantly, it is more difficult to detect and mitigate these insider threats, which poses significant cyber security challenges to an industry control system (ICS) tightly coupled with today’s information technology infrastructure. Currently, power utilities rely mainly on the authentication mechanism to prevent insider threats. If an internal intruder breaks the protection barrier, it is hard to identify and intervene in time to prevent harmful damage. Based on the existing in-depth security defense system, this paper proposes an insider threat protection scheme for ICSs of power utilities. This protection scheme can conduct compliance check by taking advantage of the characteristics of its business process compliance and the nesting of upstream and downstream business processes. Taking the Advanced Metering Infrastructures (AMIs) in power utilities as an example, the potential insider threats of violation and misoperation under the current management mechanism are identified after the analysis of remote charge control operation. According to the business process, a scheme of compliance check for remote charge control command is presented. Finally, the analysis results of a specific example demonstrate that the proposed scheme can effectively prevent the consumers’ power outage due to insider threats.

Zhao, Hongwei, Qi, Yang, Li, Weilin.  2022.  Decentralized Power Management for Multi-active Bridge Converter. IECON 2022 – 48th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. :1—6.
Multi-active bridge (MAB) converter has played an important role in the power conversion of renewable-based smart grids, electrical vehicles, and more/all electrical aircraft. However, the increase of MAB submodules greatly complicates the control architecture. In this regard, the conventional centralized control strategies, which rely on a single controller to process all the information, will be limited by the computation burden. To overcome this issue, this paper proposes a decentralized power management strategy for MAB converter. The switching frequencies of MAB submodules are adaptively regulated based on the submodule local information. Through this effort, flexible electrical power routing can be realized without communications among submodules. The proposed methodology not only relieves the computation burden of MAB control system, but also improves its modularity, flexibility, and expandability. Finally, the experiment results of a three-module MAB converter are presented for verification.

Power system security assessment is a major issue among the fundamental functions needed for the proper power systems operation. In order to perform the security evaluation, the contingency analysis is a key component. However, the dynamic evolution of power systems during the past decades led to the necessity of novel techniques to facilitate this task. In this paper, power systems security is defined based on the N-l contingency analysis. An artificial neural network approach is proposed to ensure the fast evaluation of power systems security. In this regard, the IEEE 14 bus transmission system is used to verify the performance of the proposed model, the results showing high efficiency subject to multiple evaluation metrics.

In the process of compiling the power-cut window period of the power grid equipment maintenance plan, problems such as omission of constraints are prone to occur due to excessive reliance on manual experience. In response to these problems, this paper proposes a method for mining key features of the power-cut window based on grey relational analysis. Through mining and analysis of the historical operation data of the power grid, the operation data of new energy, and the historical power-cut information of equipment, the indicators that play a key role in the arrangement of the outage window period of the equipment maintenance plan are found. Then use the key indicator information to formulate the window period. By mining the relationship between power grid operation data and equipment power outages, this paper can give full play to the big data advantages of the power grid, improve the accuracy and efficiency of the power-cut window period.

At present, the black-start mode of the large power grid is mostly limited to relying on the black-start power supply inside the system, or only to the recovery mode that regards the transmission power of tie lines between systems as the black-start power supply. The starting power supply involved in the situation of the large power outage is incomplete and it is difficult to give full play to the respective advantages of internal and external power sources. In this paper, a method of coordinated black-start of large power grid internal and external power sources is proposed by combining the two modes. Firstly, the black-start capability evaluation system is built to screen out the internal black-start power supply, and the external black-start power supply is determined by analyzing the connection relationship between the systems. Then, based on the specific implementation principles, the black-start power supply coordination strategy is formulated by using the Dijkstra shortest path algorithm. Based on the condensation idea, the black-start zoning and path optimization method applicable to this strategy is proposed. Finally, the black-start security verification and corresponding control measures are adopted to obtain a scheme of black-start cooperation between internal and external power sources in the large power grid. The above method is applied in a real large power grid and compared with the conventional restoration strategy to verify the feasibility and efficiency of this method.

Culler, Megan J., Morash, Sean, Smith, Brian, Cleveland, Frances, Gentle, Jake.  2021.  A Cyber-Resilience Risk Management Architecture for Distributed Wind. 2021 Resilience Week (RWS). :1–8.
Distributed wind is an electric energy resource segment with strong potential to be deployed in many applications, but special consideration of resilience and cybersecurity is needed to address the unique conditions associated with distributed wind. Distributed wind is a strong candidate to help meet renewable energy and carbon-free energy goals. However, care must be taken as more systems are installed to ensure that the systems are reliable, resilient, and secure. The physical and communications requirements for distributed wind mean that there are unique cybersecurity considerations, but there is little to no existing guidance on best practices for cybersecurity risk management for distributed wind systems specifically. This research develops an architecture for managing cyber risks associated with distributed wind systems through resilience functions. The architecture takes into account the configurations, challenges, and standards for distributed wind to create a risk-focused perspective that considers threats, vulnerabilities, and consequences. We show how the resilience functions of identification, preparation, detection, adaptation, and recovery can mitigate cyber threats. We discuss common distributed wind architectures and interconnections to larger power systems. Because cybersecurity cannot exist independently, the cyber-resilience architecture must consider the system holistically. Finally, we discuss risk assessment recommendations with special emphasis on what sets distributed wind systems apart from other distributed energy resources (DER).

In power systems, having accurate device models is crucial for grid reliability, availability, and resiliency. Existing model calibration methods based on mathematical approaches often lead to multiple solutions due to the ill-posed nature of the problem, which would require further interventions from the field engineers in order to select the optimal solution. In this paper, we present a novel deep-learning-based approach for model parameter calibration in power systems. Our study focused on the generator model as an example. We studied several deep-learning-based approaches including 1-D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU), which were trained to estimate model parameters using simulated Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data. Quantitative evaluations showed that our proposed methods can achieve high accuracy in estimating the model parameters, i.e., achieved a 0.0079 MSE on the testing dataset. We consider these promising results to be the basis for further exploration and development of advanced tools for model validation and calibration.

In this paper, physical layer security (PLS) analysis of a cooperative wireless communication system in which the source and destination nodes communicate via a relay employing decode-and-forward protocol is performed for double Rayleigh fading channel model. For the system where the source, relay and target have single antenna, an eavesdropper with multiantenna listens the source and relay together by using maximum-ratio-combining, secrecy outage and positive secrecy capacity possibilities are obtained in closed-form. The theoretical results are verified by Monte-Carlo simulations. From the results, it is observed that as the number of antennas of the eavesdropper is increased, the PLS performance of the system worsens.

Modern day grid operation requires multiple interlinked applications and many automated processes at control center for monitoring and operation of grid. Information technology integrated with operational technology plays a critical role in grid operation. Computing resource requirements of these software applications varies widely and includes high processing applications, high Input/Output (I/O) sensitive applications and applications with low resource requirements. Present day grid operation control center uses various applications for load despatch schedule management, various real-time analytics & optimization applications, post despatch analysis and reporting applications etc. These applications are integrated with Operational Technology (OT) like Data acquisition system / Energy management system (SCADA/EMS), Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) etc. This paper discusses various design considerations and implementation of converged infrastructure through virtualization technology by consolidation of servers and storages using multi-cluster approach to meet high availability requirement of the applications and achieve desired objectives of grid control center of north eastern region in India. The process involves weighing benefits of different architecture solution, grouping of application hosts, making multiple clusters with reliability and security considerations, and designing suitable infrastructure to meet all end objectives. Reliability, enhanced resource utilization, economic factors, storage and physical node selection, integration issues with OT systems and optimization of cost are the prime design considerations. Modalities adopted to minimize downtime of critical systems for grid operation during migration from the existing infrastructure and integration with OT systems of North Eastern Regional Load Despatch Center are also elaborated in this paper.

Parizad, Ali, Hatziadoniu, Constantine.  2021.  False Data Detection in Power System Under State Variables' Cyber Attacks Using Information Theory. 2021 IEEE Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI). :1—8.
State estimation (SE) plays a vital role in the reliable operation of modern power systems, gives situational awareness to the operators, and is employed in different functions of the Energy Management System (EMS), such as Optimal Power Flow (OPF), Contingency Analysis (CA), power market mechanism, etc. To increase SE's accuracy and protect it from compromised measurements, Bad Data Detection (BDD) algorithm is employed. However, the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) into the modern power system makes it a complicated cyber-physical system (CPS). It gives this opportunity to an adversary to find some loopholes and flaws, penetrate to CPS layer, inject false data, bypass existing BDD schemes, and consequently, result in security and stability issues. This paper employs a semi-supervised learning method to find normal data patterns and address the False Data Injection Attack (FDIA) problem. Based on this idea, the Probability Distribution Functions (PDFs) of measurement variations are derived for training and test data sets. Two distinct indices, i.e., Absolute Distance (AD) and Relative Entropy (RE), a concept in Information Theory, are utilized to find the distance between these two PDFs. In case an intruder compromises data, the related PDF changes. However, we demonstrate that AD fails to detect these changes. On the contrary, the RE index changes significantly and can properly detect FDIA. This proposed method can be used in a real-time attack detection process where the larger RE index indicates the possibility of an attack on the real-time data. To investigate the proposed methodology's effectiveness, we utilize the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) data (Jan.-Dec. 2019) with a 5-minute resolution and map it to the IEEE 14-bus test system, and prepare an appropriate data set. After that, two different case studies (attacks on voltage magnitude ( Vm), and phase angle (θ)) with different attack parameters (i.e., 0.90, 0.95, 0.98, 1.02, 1.05, and 1.10) are defined to assess the impact of an attack on the state variables at different buses. The results show that RE index is a robust and reliable index, appropriate for real-time applications, and can detect FDIA in most of the defined case studies.

This paper studies the physical layer security of four reactive relay selection methods (optimum relay selection, opportunist relay selection enhancement, suboptimal relay selection enhancement and partial relay selection enhancement) in a cooperative cognitive radio network including one pair of primary users, one eavesdropper, multiple relays and secondary users with perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) at receivers. In addition, we consider existing a direct link from a secondary source (S) to secondary destination receivers (D) and eavesdroppers (E). The secrecy outage probability, outage probability, intercept probability and reliability are calculated to verify the four relay selection methods with the fading channels by using Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that the loss of secrecy outage probability when remaining direct links from S to D and S to E. Additionally, the results also show that the trade-off between secrecy outage probability and the intercept probability and the optimum relay selection method outperforms other methods.

We investigate cognitive radio networks where the unlicensed sender operates in the overlay mode to relay the information of the licensed transmitter as well as send its individual information. To secure information broadcasted by the unlicensed sender against the wire-tapper, we invoke jammers to limit eavesdropping. Also, to exploit efficiently radio frequency energy in licensed signals, we propose the unlicensed sender and all jammers to scavenge this energy source. To assess the security measures of both licensed and unlicensed networks, we first derive rigorous closed-form formulas of licensed/unlicensed secrecy outage probabilities. Next, we validate these formulas with Monte-Carlo simulations before using them to achieve insights into the security capability of the proposed jamming-aided energy harvesting cognitive radio networks in crucial system parameters.

State estimation is the core operation performed within the energy management system (EMS) of smart grid. Hence, the reliability and integrity of a smart grid relies heavily on the performance of sensor measurement dependent state estimation process. The increasing penetration of cyber control into the smart grid operations has raised severe concern for executing a secured state estimation process. The limitation with regard to monitoring large number of sensors allows an intruder to manipulate sensor information, as one of the soft targets for disrupting power system operations. Phasor measurement unit (PMU) can be adopted as an alternative to immunize the state estimation from corrupted conventional sensor measurements. However, the high installation cost of PMUs restricts its installation throughout the network. In this paper a graphical approach is proposed to identify minimum PMU placement locations, so as to detect any intrusion of malicious activity within the smart grid. The high speed synchronized PMU information ensures processing of secured set of sensor measurements to the control center. The results of PMU information based linear state estimation is compared with the conventional non-linear state estimation to detect any attack within the system. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme has been validated on IEEE 14 bus test system.

The cluster-featured conurbation cyber-physical power system (CPPS) interconnected with tie-lines facing the hazards from catastrophic cascading failures. To achieve better real-time performance, enhance the autonomous ability and improve resilience for the clustered conurbation CPPS, the decentralized cyber structure and the corresponding distributed security control strategy is proposed. Facing failures, the real-time security control is incorporated to mitigate cascading failures. The distributed security control problem is solved reliably based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). The system overall resilience degradation index(SORDI) adopted reflects the influence of cascading failures on both the topological integrity and operational security. The case study illustrates the decentralized cyber layer and distributed control will decrease the data congestion and enhance the autonomous ability for clusters, thus perform better effectiveness in mitigating the cascading failures, especially in topological perspective. With the proposed distributed security control strategy, curves of SORDI show more characteristics of second-order percolation transition and the cascading failure threshold increase, which is more efficient when the initial failure size is near the threshold values or step-type inflection point. Because of the feature of geological aggregation under cluster-based attack, the efficiency of the cluster-focused distributed security control strategy is more obvious than other nodes attack circumstances.

With the ever-increasing energy demand and enormous development of generation capacity, modern bulk power systems are mostly pushed to operate with narrower security boundaries. Therefore, timely and reliable assessment of power system security is an inevitable necessity to prevent widespread blackouts and cascading outages. In this paper, a new white-box decision tree-based preventive strategy is presented to evaluate and enhance the power system dynamic security versus the credible N-K contingencies originating from transient instabilities. As well, a competent operating measure is expertly defined to detect and identify the islanding and non-islanding conditions with the aid of a wide-area phasor measurement system. The newly developed strategy is outlined by a three-level simulation with the aim of guaranteeing the power system dynamic security. In the first-level, six hundred islanding and non-islanding scenarios are generated using an enhanced version of the ID3 algorithm, referred to as the C4.5 algorithms. In the second-level, optimal C4.5 decision trees are offline trained based on operating parameters achieved by the reduction error pruning method. In the third level, however, all trained decision trees are rigorously investigated offline and online; and then, the most accurate and reliable decision tree is selected. The newly developed strategy is examined on the IEEE New England 39-bus test system, and its effectiveness is assured by simulation studies.

With the increasing application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), cyberattacks have become more prevalent against Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) such as the modern power grids. Various methods have been proposed to model the cybersecurity threats, but so far limited studies have been focused on the defensive strategies subject to the limited security budget. In this paper, the power supply reliability is evaluated considering the strategic allocation of defense resources. Specifically, the optimal mixed strategies are formulated by the Stackelberg Security Game (SSG) to allocate the defense resources on multiple targets subject to cyberattacks. The cyberattacks against the intrusion-tolerant Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system are mathematically modeled by Semi-Markov Process (SMP) kernel. The intrusion tolerance capability of the SCADA system provides buffered residence time before the substation failure to enhance the network robustness against cyberattacks. Case studies of the cyberattack scenarios are carried out to demonstrate the intrusion tolerance capability. Depending on the defense resource allocation scheme, the intrusion-tolerant SCADA system possesses varying degrees of self-healing capability to restore to the good state and prevent the substations from failure. If more defense resources are invested on the substations, the intrusion tolerant capability can be further enhanced for protecting the substations. Finally, the actuarial insurance principle is designed to estimate transmission companies' individual premiums considering correlated cybersecurity risks. The proposed insurance premium principle is designed to provide incentive for investments on enhancing the intrusion tolerance capability, which is verified by the results of case studies.

Ding, Xinyao, Wang, Yan.  2020.  False Data Injection Attack Detection Before Decoding in DF Cooperative Relay Network. 2020 Asia Conference on Computers and Communications (ACCC). :57—61.
False data injection (FDI) attacks could happen in decode-and-forward (DF) wireless cooperative relay networks. Although physical integrity check (PIC) can combat that by applying physical layer detection, the detector depends on the decoding results and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) further deteriorates the detecting results. In this paper, a physical layer detect-before-decode (DbD) method is proposed, which has low computational complexity with no sacrifice of false alarm and miss detection rates. One significant advantage of this method is the detector does not depend on the decoding results. In order to implement the proposed DbD method, a unified error sufficient statistic (UESS) containing the full information of FDI attacks is constructed. The proposed UESS simplifies the detector because it is applicable to all link conditions, which means there is no need to deal each link condition with a specialized sufficient statistic. Moreover, the source to destination outage probability (S2Dop) of the DF cooperative relay network utilizing the proposed DbD method is studied. Finally, numerical simulations verify the good performance of this DbD method.

In this paper, we propose a power allocation scheme in order to improve both secure and reliable performance in the wireless two-hop threshold-selection decode-and-forward (DF) relaying networks, which is so crucial to set a threshold value related the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the source signal at relay nodes for perfect decoding. We adapt the maximal-ratio combining (MRC) receiving SNR from the direct and relaying paths both at the destination and at the eavesdropper. Particularly worth mentioning is that the closed expression form of outage probability and intercept probability is driven, which can quantify the security and reliability, respectively. We also make endeavors to utilize a metric to tradeoff the security and the reliability (SRT) and find out the relevance between them in the balanced case. But beyond that, in the pursuit of tradeoff performance, power allocation tends to depend on the threshold value. In other words, it provides a new method optimizing total power to the source and the relay by the threshold value. The results are obtained from analysis, confirmed by simulation, and predicted by artificial neural networks (ANNs), which is trained with back propagation (BP) algorithm, and thus the feasibility of the proposed method is verified.

Cybersecurity of the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, which is the key component of the cyber-physical systems (CPS), is facing big challenges and will affect the reliability of the smart grid. System reliability can be influenced by various cyber threats. In this paper, the reliability of the electric power system considering different cybersecurity issues in the SCADA system is analyzed by using Semi-Markov Process (SMP) and mean time-to-compromise (MTTC). External and insider attacks against the SCADA system are investigated with the SMP models and the results are compared. The system reliability is evaluated by reliability indexes including loss of load probability (LOLP) and expected energy not supplied (EENS) through Monte Carlo Simulations (MCS). The lurking threats of the cyberattacks are also analyzed in the study. Case studies were conducted on the IEEE Reliability Test System (RTS-96). The results show that with the increase of the MTTCs of the cyberattacks, the LOLP values decrease. When insider attacks are considered, both the LOLP and EENS values dramatically increase owing to the decreased MTTCs. The results provide insights into the establishment of the electric power system reliability enhancement strategies.

The electrical power system is the backbone of our nations critical infrastructure. It has been designed to withstand single component failures based on a set of reliability metrics which have proven acceptable during normal operating conditions. However, in recent years there has been an increasing frequency of extreme weather events. Many have resulted in widespread long-term power outages, proving reliability metrics do not provide adequate energy security. As a result, researchers have focused their efforts resilience metrics to ensure efficient operation of power systems during extreme events. A resilient system has the ability to resist, adapt, and recover from disruptions. Therefore, resilience has demonstrated itself as a promising concept for currently faced challenges in power distribution systems. In this work, we propose an operational resilience metric for modern power distribution systems. The metric is based on the aggregation of system assets adaptive capacity in real and reactive power. This metric gives information to the magnitude and duration of a disturbance the system can withstand. We demonstrate resilience metric in a case study under normal operation and during a power contingency on a microgrid. In the future, this information can be used by operators to make more informed decisions based on system resilience in an effort to prevent power outages.

Due to geographical locations of Indonesia, some technology such as hydro and solar photovoltaics are very attractive to be used and developed. Distribution Energy Resources (DER) is the appropriate schemes implemented to achieve optimal operation respecting the location and capacity of the plant. The Gorontalo sub-system network was chosen as a case study considering both of micro-hydro and PV as contributed to supply the grid. The needs of a smart electrical system are required to improve reliability, power quality, and adaptation to any circumstances during DER application. While the topology was changing over time, intermittent of DER output and bidirectional power flow can be overcome with smart grid systems. In this study, an automation algorithm has been conducted to aid the engineers in solving the protection problems caused by DER implementation. The Protection Security Assessment (PSA) method is used to evaluate the state of the protection system. Determine the relay settings using an adaptive rule-based method on expert systems. The application with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been developed to make user easier to get the specific relay settings and locations which are sensitive, fast, reliable, and selective.
